Complex power distribution analysis in plates covered with passive constrained layer damping patches

2012

International audience; The vibration of a plate partially covered with a passive constrained layer damping (PCLD) patch is studied from an energetic point of view. The damped plate is excited by an acoustic plane wave. The study is done with a numerical two-dimensional multilayer plate model. Results of the present model are compared to those obtained with three-dimensional finite element models. It is shown that the present model gives accurate results, even for the layer's inner behavior. It is less expansive in terms of computational cost; hence, it can simulate efficiently the structure for higher frequencies. Mathematical formulas for complex mechanical power are presented, and the li…

A NEW SYMMETRIC AND POSITIVE DEFINITE BOUNDARY ELEMENT FORMULATION FOR LATERAL VIBRATIONS OF PLATES

1997

Abstract A new symmetric and positive definite boundary element method in the time domain is presented for the dynamic analysis of thin elastic plates. The governing equations of the problem are obtained from a variational principle in which a hybrid modified functional is employed. The functional is expressed in terms of the domain and boundary basic variables in plate bending, assumed to be independent of each other. In the discretized model the boundary variables are expressed by nodal values, whereas the internal displacement field is modelled by a superposition of static fundamental solutions. The equations of motion are deduced from the functional stationarity conditions and they cons…

Subjective ranking of concert halls substantiated through orthogonal objective parameters.

2015

[EN] This paper studies the global subjective assessment, obtained from mean values of the results of surveys addressed to members of the audience of live concerts in Spanish auditoriums, through the mean values of the three orthogonal objective parameters (Tmid, IACCE3, and LEV), expressed in just noticeable differences (JNDs), regarding the best-valued hall. Results show that a linear combination of the relative variations of orthogonal parameters can largely explain the overall perceived quality of the sample. However, the mean values of certain orthogonal parameters are not representative, which shows that an alternative approach to the problem is necessary. Various possibilities are pr…

Global-Local model for guided wave scattering problems with application to defect characterization in built-up composite structures

2020

Abstract Predicting scattering of elastic guided waves in multi-layered solid plates with geometrical and/or material discontinuities is of great interest to many fields, including ultrasonic-based Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and health monitoring of critical structural components (SHM). The problem is complicated by the multimode and dispersive behaviour of the guided waves. This paper describes a unified Global-Local (GL) approach that is computationally efficient in cases that can be very complex in terms of geometry and/or material properties. One example of this is a composite built-up structure. The proposed GL procedure discretizes the “local” region with the scattering discontinui…

Deciphering la drammatica

2014

Combining metrical structure with gesture and expressiveness, the nineteenth-century Italian actors drew a distinguished form of acting, to which they referred as la drammatica, that was based on a system of vocal modulation. La voce apposita was the predominant drammatica declamation symbol. It signalled an opening voice, or key-voice, which imposed grades and intonations on emotions. The drammatica included four dominant types of voce apposita. The leading actor/actress of a company as well as actor-manager (capocomico) portrayed his/her roles and effected his/her acting fellows’ work. When properly applied, the four types of voce apposita produced a spontaneous and attractive recitation.…

An ASSOM neural network to represent actions performed by an autonomous agent

1997

An ASSOM neural network to describe the action performed by an autonomous reactive agent is proposed. The neural network receives in input the sequences of data acquired by the agent internal sensors and it classifies them by generating the corresponding symbolic assertions. Experimental results performed on a RWI B12 autonomous robot are reported.

Free riding as méchanism

1998

Free-riding is methodologically puzzling. It is at the same time important and often not observed as an actual phenomenon. The paper explores the possibility of treating free riding as an underlying or causal mechanism. As such, free riding is to be treated as part of the real world rather than of the world of models or theories. However, the free riding mechanism is particularly prone to operate not in isolation but together with other mechanisms. This feature has consequences on issues such as empirical content, testability or relevance. These questions are discussed in the light of some recent work in philosophy of science and with special attention given to the development of experiment…

Active repair technology applied to delaminated composite structures

2009

The main target of the present paper is represented by the fracture mechanics charac-terization of delaminated composite structures actively repaired through piezoelectric patches. A boundary element code, formulated for anisotropic piezoelectric solids, including, as limiting case, the applicability to linear elastic anisotropic materials has been then imple-mented. The modeling of the delaminated composite structures as well as of the assembled structures, made of the damaged components and the patches, has been achieved through the multidomain technique. Moreover, to take into account for the adhesive layer between the host structures and the piezoelectric patches, a "spring-model" has b…
