Search for anomalous production of prompt like-sign muon pairs and constraints on physics beyond the Standard Model with the ATLAS detector

2012

An inclusive search for anomalous production of two prompt, isolated muons with the same electric charge is presented. The search is performed in a data sample corresponding to 1.6  fb−1 of integrated luminosity collected in 2011 at √s=7  TeV with the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Muon pairs are selected by requiring two isolated muons of the same electric charge with pT>20  GeV and |η|<2.5. Minimal requirements are placed on the rest of the event activity. The distribution of the invariant mass of the muon pair m(μμ) is found to agree well with the background expectation. Upper limits on the cross section for anomalous production of two muons with the same electric charge are placed as a func…

Estimating the angular resolution of tracks in neutrino telescopes based on a likelihood analysis

2004

A semianalytic method to estimate the angular resolution of tracks, that have been reconstructed by a likelihood approach, is presented. The optimal choice of coordinate systems and resolution parameters, as well as tests of the method are discussed based on an application for a neutrino telescope.

Spline Histogram Method for Reconstruction of Probability Density Functions of Clusters of Galaxies

2003

We describe the spline histogram algorithm which is useful for visualization of the probability density function setting up a statistical hypothesis for a test. The spline histogram is constructed from discrete data measurements using tensioned cubic spline interpolation of the cumulative distribution function which is then differentiated and smoothed using the Savitzky-Golay filter. The optimal width of the filter is determined by minimization of the Integrated Square Error function. The current distribution of the TCSplin algorithm written in f77 with IDL and Gnuplot visualization scripts is available from this http URL

Optimal filtering algorithm implementation in FPGAs for the ATLAS TileCal Read-Out drivers

2011

TileCal is the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment in the LHC (CERN). Its Read-Out Drivers (RODs) process, in real time, the digitized information coming from the front-end electronics and send it to the Read-Out System. Data processing in the ROD boards is performed in Processing Unit Mezzanine Cards that use commercial DSPs to run the Optimal Filtering (OF) algorithms.

The ATLAS TileCal read-out drivers signal reconstruction

2009

TileCal is the hadronic calorimeter of the ATLAS experiment at the LHC collider at CERN. The Read-Out Drivers (ROD) are the core of the off-detector electronics. The main components of the RODs are the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) placed on the Processing Unit (PU) dautherboards. This paper describes the DSP code and its performance with calibration and real data. The code is divided into two different parts: the first part contains the core functionalities and the second one the reconstruction algorithms. The core acts as an operating system and it controls the configuration, the data reception, transmission, online monitoring and the synchronization between front-end data and the Trigge…

Analysis of the irradiance along different paths in the image space using the Wigner distribution function

1997

Abstract The intensity distribution along different paths in the image space of an optical system is described in a two-dimensional phase-space domain in terms of the Wigner distribution function. This approach is useful for an efficient analysis of the performance of optical imaging systems suffering from spherical aberration. The good performance of the method is shown in some numerical simulations.

All-optical super resolved and extended depth of focus imaging with random pinhole array aperture

2008

In this paper, we present a novel approach which allows combining super resolved imaging with extended depth of focus while the result is obtained by all-optical means and no digital processing is required. The presented approach for the super resolved imaging includes attaching a random pinhole array plate to the aperture plane of the imaging system. The energetic efficiency of the system is high and it is much larger than an imaging through a single pinhole which also has extended depth of focus. The super resolving result is obtained by mechanic scanning of the aperture plane with the random plate.
