Hilbert-Huang single-shot spatially multiplexed interferometric microscopy.

2018

Hilbert-Huang single-shot spatially multiplexed interferometric microscopy (H2S2MIM) is presented as the implementation of a robust, fast, and accurate single-shot phase estimation algorithm with an extremely simple, low-cost, and highly stable way to convert a bright field microscope into a holographic one using partially coherent illumination. Altogether, H2S2MIM adds high-speed (video frame rate) quantitative phase imaging capability to a commercially available nonholographic microscope with improved phase reconstruction (coherence noise reduction). The technique has been validated using a 20×/0.46  NA objective in a regular Olympus BX-60 upright microscope for static, as well as dynamic…

2013

The motion energy sensor has been shown to account for a wide range of physiological and psychophysical results in motion detection and discrimination studies. It has become established as the standard computational model for retinal movement sensing in the human visual system. Adaptation effects have been extensively studied in the psychophysical literature on motion perception, and play a crucial role in theoretical debates, but the current implementation of the energy sensor does not provide directly for modelling adaptation-induced changes in output. We describe an extension of the model to incorporate changes in output due to adaptation. The extended model first computes a space-time r…

Publisher Correction: Stabilizing spin spirals and isolated skyrmions at low magnetic field exploiting vanishing magnetic anisotropy

2018

Skyrmions are topologically protected non-collinear magnetic structures. Their stability is ideally suited to carry information in, e.g., racetrack memories. The success of such a memory critically depends on the ability to stabilize and manipulate skyrmions at low magnetic fields. The non-collinear Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction originating from spin-orbit coupling drives skyrmion formation. It competes with Heisenberg exchange and magnetic anisotropy favoring collinear states. Isolated skyrmions in ultra-thin films so far required magnetic fields as high as several Tesla. Here, we show that isolated skyrmions in a monolayer of Co/Ru(0001) can be stabilized down to vanishing fields. Eve…

Search for pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks

2008

We report on a search for the pair production of second generation scalar leptoquarks (LQ) in ppbar collisions at the center of mass energy sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb-1 collected with the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Topologies arising from the LQLQbar->muqnuq and LQLQbar->muqmuq decay modes are investigated. No excess of data over the standard model prediction is observed and upper limits on the leptoquark pair production cross section are derived at the 95% C.L. as a function of the leptoquark mass and the branching fraction beta for the decay LQ->muq. These are interpreted as lower limits on the lepto…

Improved W boson mass measurement with the DO detector

2002

We have measured the W boson mass using the DO detector and a data sample of 82 pb(-1) from the Fermilab Tevatron collider. This measurement uses W-->enu decays, where the electron is close to a boundary of a central electromagnetic calorimeter module. Such "edge" electrons have not been used in any previous DO analysis, and represent a 14% increase in the W boson sample size. For these electrons, new response and resolution parameters are determined, and revised backgrounds and underlying event energy flow measurements are made. When the current measurement is combined with previous DO W boson mass measurements, we obtain M-W=80.483+/-0.084 GeV. The 8% improvement from the previous DO meas…

Quasi-model-independent search for new physics at large transverse momentum

2001

We apply a quasi-model-independent strategy ("Sleuth") to search for new high p_T physics in approximately 100 pb^-1 of ppbar collisions at sqrt(s) = 1.8 TeV collected by the DZero experiment during 1992-1996 at the Fermilab Tevatron. Over thirty-two e mu X, W+jets-like, Z+jets-like, and 3(lepton/photon)X exclusive final states are systematically analyzed for hints of physics beyond the standard model. Simultaneous sensitivity to a variety of models predicting new phenomena at the electroweak scale is demonstrated by testing the method on a particular signature in each set of final states. No evidence of new high p_T physics is observed in the course of this search, and we find that 89% of …

Muon reconstruction and identification with the Run II D0 detector

2013

We present an overview of the muon reconstruction and identification methods employed by the D0 Collaboration to analyze the Run II (2001-2011) ppbar data of the Fermilab Tevatron collider at sqrt s = 1.96 TeV. We discuss the performance of these methods, how it is measured using D0 data, and how it is properly modeled by the D0 simulation program. In its pseudorapidity acceptance, eta< 2, the muon system identifies high-pT muons (pT>10 GeV) with efficiencies ranging from 72% to 89%. Muons tracks are reconstructed in the D0 central tracking system with efficiencies ranging from 85% to 92% and with a typical relative momentum resolution of 10% for pT = 40 GeV. Isolation criteria reject…

The EM imaging reconstruction method in γ-ray astronomy

1998

Abstract The simpler imaging reconstruction methods used for γ-ray coded mask telescopes are based on correlation methods, very fast and simple-to-use but with limitations in the reconstructed image. To improve these results, other reconstruction methods have been developed, such as the maximum entropy methods or the Iterative Removal Of Sources (IROS). However, such kind of methods are slower and can be impracticable for very complex telescopes. In this paper we present an alternative image reconstruction method, based on an iterative maximum likelihood algorithm called the EM algorithm, easy to implement and that can be successfully used for not very complex coded mask systems, as is the …

Neutrino mean free path in neutron matter with Brussels-Montreal Skyrme functionals

2016

We calculate the neutrino mean free path in cold neutron matter with some modern Brussels-Montreal functionals. The three typical functionals used in this article produce quite different results implying a possible impact on the cooling mechanism of neutron stars.
