An ASSOM neural network to represent actions performed by an autonomous agent

1997

An ASSOM neural network to describe the action performed by an autonomous reactive agent is proposed. The neural network receives in input the sequences of data acquired by the agent internal sensors and it classifies them by generating the corresponding symbolic assertions. Experimental results performed on a RWI B12 autonomous robot are reported.

Automatic Segmentation of HEp-2 Cells Based on Active Contours Model

2018

In the past years, a great deal of effort was put into research regarding Indirect Immunofluorescence techniques with the aim of development of CAD systems. In this work a method for segmenting HEp-2 cells in IIF images is presented. Such task is one of the most challenging of automated IIF analysis, because the segmentation algorithm has to cope with a large heterogeneity of shapes and textures. In order to address this problem, numerous techniques and their combinations were evaluated, in a process aimed at maximizing the figure of merit. The proposed method, for a greater definition of cellular contours, uses the active contours in the last phase of the process. The initial conditions, c…

Unsupervised low-key image segmentation using curve evolution approach

2013

Low-key images widely exist in imaging-based systems such as space telescopes, medical imaging equipment, machine vision systems. Unsupervised low-key image segmentation is an important process for image analysis or digital measurement in these applications. In this paper, a novel active contour model with the probability density function (PDF) of gamma distribution for image segmentation is proposed. The flexible gamma distribution is used to describe both of the heterogeneous foreground and dark background in a low-key image. Besides, an unsupervised curve initialization method is also designed in this paper, which helps to accelerate the convergence speed of curve evolution. The effectiv…

First Multi-wavelength Campaign on the Gamma-ray-loud Active Galaxy IC 310

2017

The extragalactic VHE gamma-ray sky is rich in blazars. These are jetted active galactic nuclei viewed at a small angle to the line-of-sight. Only a handful of objects viewed at a larger angle are known so far to emit above 100 GeV. Multi-wavelength studies of such objects up to the highest energies provide new insights into the particle and radiation processes of active galactic nuclei. We report the results from the first multi-wavelength campaign observing the TeV detected nucleus of the active galaxy IC 310, whose jet is observed at a moderate viewing angle of 10 deg - 20 deg. The multi-instrument campaign was conducted between 2012 Nov. and 2013 Jan., and involved observations with MAG…

Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system for kinematics solutions of redundant robots

2016

This written paper presents aspects concerning the implementation of the Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) in the resolution of a redundant serial robot kinematics. The kinematics solutions are divided into two categories: direct kinematics solutions and inverse kinematics solutions. To be able to control a robot the most important solutions are the ones for the inverse kinematics since one knows the position and the final orientation of the end effector and needs to determine the relative displacement or movements into the robot couplings. To obtain the optimal solutions for the inverse kinematics of a redundant robot the mathematical equations were based onto the redundancy ci…

Autostereoscopic Three-Dimensional Neuronavigation to the Sella: Technical Note.

2017

Background A drawback of conventional neuronavigation is the necessity of focusing on two-dimensional images in 3 planes at the same time to determine one's position in the operating field. A solution would be to merge the images into a single three-dimensional (3D) image that mirrors the actual anatomy. The introduction of holographic glassless 3D monitors paved the way to 3D navigation. We present our experience with 3D neuronavigation as exemplified by navigation to and within the sella. Methods Operative planning was conducted with a navigation system using cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The image data sets were processed by the prototype Clariti 3D system t…

Dynamic accommodation without feedback does not respond to isolated blur cues

2016

Highlights • A new methodology is used to study a potential cue for dynamic accommodation. • We show that human accommodation is not driven correctly by defocus alone. • Accommodation is most efficient using changes in stimulus vergence with feedback.

Perceptual and semantic familiarity in recognition memory: an event-related potential study

2008

Putative event-related potential correlates of perceptual and semantic bases of familiarity in recognition memory were examined with a categorized pictures recognition test. Our participants were presented, at study, with pictures of categorized objects and, at test, with either the very same pictures presented at study, different pictures of studied objects, pictures of new objects belonging to studied categories, or pictures of completely new-uncategorized objects. We found evidence for a parallel evaluation, within familiarity process, of both perceptual and semantic information. We also found new and interesting evidence for the existence of some common neural circuits involved in the F…
