Decision-making Tool for Moving from 3-axes to 5-axes CNC Machine-tool

Abstract Nowadays most of the parts within machine-building industry are machines on CNC machine-tools. According to their mechanical and kinematic structure, CNC machine-tools can be divided into 3-axes and 5-axes ones. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks and choosing between them could be a very difficult process. This paper presents a decision support tool for aiding the process of selecting between using and/or buying either a 3-axes CNC milling machine or a 5-axes milling machine, based upon fuzzy logic. The tool was built using the Fuzzy Logic Toolbox and the fuzzy graphical user interface (GUI) within Matlab software package.
Metal Cutting Operations and Terminology

This chapter presents a general description of the machining processes and machining operations using various classification criteria. The classification of machining processes is based on the energy source used and the type of generating mechanisms, whereas the classification of machining operations utilizes characteristic motions describing their kinematics. Some examples of turning, milling, hole making, broaching and threading operations are provided. Kinematics of typical cutting operations and appropriate standardized cutting parameters are described. The geometry of cutting tools in the tool-in-hand and tool-in-use systems, including relevant tool angles, is characterized.
Building 3D Geometric and Kinematic Models of Five-Axis Machine-Tools for Manufacturing Prosthetic Devices

The paper presents the process of building and testing a geometric and kinematic model of a five-axis machining center, which can be used for accurate cutting processes simulation of complex parts. After building the model, it was be tested by simulating the machining process of a hip joint prosthetic device. The prosthetic device was chosen because of its complex shape and because it was obtained by a 3D scanning process, which means that the part was reconstructed using meshes, instead of surfaces, which makes the toolpath control more difficult.
GPCALMA, a mammographic CAD in a GRID connection

Purpose of this work is the development of an automatic system which could be useful for radiologists in the investigation of breast cancer. A breast neoplasia is often marked by the presence of microcalcifications and massive lesions in the mammogram: hence the need for tools able to recognize such lesions at an early stage. GPCALMA (Grid Platform Computer Assisted Library for MAmmography), a collaboration among italian physicists and radiologists, has built a large distributed database of digitized mammographic images (at this moment about 5500 images corresponding to 1650 patients). Gabor filters in industrial inspection: a review. Application to semiconductor industry

This paper focuses on reviewing some recent works of the use of Gabor filters dealing with industrial applications. After a brief recall of Gabor filter basis, the two usual uses of Gabor filters are recalled: filter bank approach and filter design approach. The third part presents recent published works domain by domain. A fourth part exposes our own work with Gabor Filters for defect detection on semiconductor. A short conclusion summarizes the paper.

Abstract: In this chapter, we introduce the fundamental concept of smart cameras on a chip or smart vision chips that simultaneously integrate the same die image capture capability and highly complex image processing. Successive technology scaling has made possible the integration of specific processing elements designed at chip level, at column level or at pixel level. A Numerical Approach to the Keel Design of a Sailing Yacht

This paper describes an approach to the keel design of a sailing yacht. The related software, which is fully automatic, permits to obtain an optimal shape by modifying the surface used to define the keel planform. B-spline curves and surfaces have been used because of their ability in following complex shapes. The algorithm integrates ad hoc implemented original software with Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) commercial ones. The optimisation procedure makes use of Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and a gradient – based optimiser for the refinement of the solution. Integral display for non-static observers

We propose to combine the Kinect and the Integral-Imaging technologies for the implementation of Integral Display. The Kinect device permits the determination, in real time, of (x,y,z) position of the observer relative to the monitor. Due to the active condition of its IR technology, the Kinect provides the observer position even in dark environments. On the other hand, SPOC 2.0 algorithm permits to calculate microimages adapted to the observer 3D position. The aim of this paper is to presents different aspects regarding the kinematic and dynamic behaviour of the fabric winding at the weaving loom. In this paper shall be presented the kinematic diagram for operating the cloth roll on the weaving machine, making the study of kinematic and dynamic cloth behaviour, setting up the expression of fabric tension. The concept of spectral filter arrays has been developed recently and allows multispectral single shot acquisition with a compact camera design.
