Resource use of wood-inhabiting fungi in different boreal forest types
2017
Generalist species are usually widespread and abundant, and thrive in heterogeneous environments. Specialists, in turn, are generally more restricted in their range, and benefit from more stable conditions. Therefore, increasing human-induced disturbance can have more negative effects on specialist than generalist species. We assessed the specialization of 77 wood-inhabiting fungal species across seven boreal forest types and different substratum qualities. A significantly higher number of specialist species was associated with herb-rich forests and afforested fields than with managed coniferous forests and wood pastures, the number of specialists associated with natural coniferous forests …
Contrasting Effects of Chronic Anthropogenic Disturbance on Activity and Species Richness of Insectivorous Bats in Neotropical Dry Forest
2022
For prioritizing conservation actions, it is vital to understand how ecologically diverse species respond to environmental change caused by human activity. This is particularly necessary considering that chronic human disturbance is a threat to biodiversity worldwide. Depending on how species tolerate and adapt to such disturbance, ecological integrity and ecosystem services will be more or less affected. Bats are a species-rich and functionally diverse group, with important roles in ecosystems, and are therefore recognized as a good model group for assessing the impact of environmental change. Their populations have decreased in several regions, especially in the tropics, and are threatene…

More is more? : Forest management allocation at different spatial scales to mitigate conflicts between ecosystem services
2017
Context: Multi-objective management can mitigate conflicts among land-use objectives. However, the effectiveness of a multi-objective solution depends on the spatial scale at which land-use is optimized. This is because the ecological variation within the planning region influences the potential for site-specific prioritization according to the different objectives. Objectives: We optimized the allocation of forest management strategies to maximize the joint production of two conflicting objectives, timber production and carbon storage, at increasing spatial scales. We examined the impacts of the extent of the planning region on the severity of the conflict, the potential for its mitigation…

Trade-offs between ecosystem service provision and the predisposition to disturbances: a NFI-based scenario analysis
2020
Abstract Background Scenario analyses that evaluate management effects on the long-term provision and sustainability of forest ecosystem services and biodiversity (ESB) also need to account for disturbances. The objectives of this study were to reveal potential trade-offs and synergies between ESB provision and disturbance predisposition at the scale of a whole country. Methods The empirical scenario model MASSIMO was used to simulate forest development and management from years 2016 to 2106 on 5086 sample plots of the Swiss National Forest Inventory (NFI). We included a business-as-usual (BAU) scenario and four scenarios of increased timber harvesting. Model output was evaluated with indic…
The importance of novel ecosystems for biodiversity : a study of ground beetles (Carabidae) on afforested fields
2014
Metsien hävittäminen, maanviljely ja muut ympäristöä muokkaavat toimet muuttavat ekosysteemejä kasvavissa määrin. Tämän seurauksena syntyy poikkeuksellisia, ihmisen toiminnasta peräisin olevia ekosysteemejä. Näiden uusekosysteemien merkitys monimuotoisuudelle kasvaa lähitulevaisuudessa kun ihmisen vaikutus Maahan lisääntyy. Metsitetyt pellot voidaan monessa tapauksessa lukea uusekosysteemeihin: lannoituksella on pitkäaikaisia vaikutuksia maaperän fysikaalisiin ominaisuuksiin ja ravinteiden määrä on metsitetyillä pelloilla suurempi kuin tavallisissa metsissä. Kasvillisuuden sukkession tarkkaa lopputulosta ei vielä tiedetä. Metsitetyt pellot käsittävät 300 000 hehtaaria Suomen pinta-alasta ja…
Sensitivity of soil decomposer communities to habitat fragmentation : an experimental approach
2004
Maaperän hajottajaeliöyhteisön vasteita pirstaloitumiseen on aiemmin tutkittu varsin vähän. Tämä on yllättävää, koska hajottajilla on tärke…
