MR2944786 Reviewed Turzański, Marian The Bolzano-Poincaré-Miranda theorem—discrete version. Topology Appl. 159 (2012), no. 13, 3130–3135. (Reviewer: …
2014
The author gives a discrete version of the Bolzano-Poincaré-Miranda theorem. Further, the author uses the main result to prove the Bolzano-Poincaré-Miranda theorem and a theorem on partitions.
From cellular senescence to age-associated diseases: miRNAs as tools and targets for healthy ageing
2017
miRNAs are the most abundant RNA species to be found in cell-free blood, encapsulated within microvesicles or bound to proteins. miRNAs play essential roles in the regulation of various biological processes. Moreover, specific changes in miRNA transcription levels or miRNA secretory levels have been linked to the development and progression of certain age-related diseases. So, they might be an ideal target for modulating healthy ageing
The role of microRNAs in driving EGFR-TKI resistance in NSCLC cell lines
2016
Background: the inhibition of EGFR kinase activity by tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs), such as gefitinib and erlotinib, can result in improved response and prolonged progression-free survival (PFS) in NSCLC patients harboring sensitizing exon 19del and exon 21 L858R mutations. Unfortunately, almost all patients will develop resistance to EGFR-TKI, in particular T790M is the most frequent mutation. Nowadays, new methods are urgently needed for a rapid, cost-effective and non-invasive identification of biomarkers as a valuable tool for obtaining the genetic follow-up data during the course of the disease. Circulating microRNAs might represent a new precious biomarker for patients’ moni…
MOLECULAR EPIDEMIOLOGY OF MYCOBACTERIUM TUBERCULOSIS COMPLEX IN PALERMO, ITALY
2014
Background: We aimed to investigate the molecular epidemiology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in the province of Palermo, Italy, by characterizing 183 isolates identified in the years 2004-2012. A comparison with 104 MTBC strains identified in the same geographic area in the years 1994-2000 was also carried out. Methods: MTBC isolates were analyzed by spoligotyping and the 24 mycobacterial interspersed repetitive unit (MIRU)-variablenumber tandem-repeat (VNTR) method typing. Susceptibility testing to streptomycin, isoniazid, rifampin and ethambutol was also carried out. Furthermore, the spoligotyping dataset obtained from 104 MTBC isolates identified in the years 1994-2000 in …

Current regimen for high-grade gliomas is maximal safe surgical resection followed by external beam radiotherapy with concurrent temozolamide. Maximal tumor resection, however, must be balanced with preservation of the patient’s neurological function. A crucial prognostic factor in oncological neurosurgery is the extent of resection. Several studies have addressed the importance of extent of resection in gliomas surgery. Despite development in the fields of pre operative and intraoperative neuroimaging and neuromonitoring have ameliorated the survival rate and the quality of life for patients affected by high grade gliomas, the clinical outcome of patients with such gliomas remains extremel…

A new bipartite matching approach for record linkage: the case of two big Italian databases
2022
In recent years, university student mobility in Italy has worsened the north-south economic divide. Therefore, studying this phenomenon and its determinants is necessary to provide helpful information to support socio-economic policies. Thus, this paper aims at integrating two big databases about university students in Italy: the first one is provided by the Ministry of University and Research, concerning the university careers of student cohorts; the second one is provided by the AlmaLaurea consortium, concerning the university experiences of graduates and their success in the labour market. Both databases contain socio-demographic information that complements each other. The proposed meth…

The fairy tale tells of a tiring process of building identity through a painful path that leads the protagonist to revisit her intricate past and, going to the heart of the wounds, to conquer living spaces less dense with certainties, but certainly more authentic.
Comparison of the exoproducts of gram-negative bacteria by SDS-page
1985
The protein exoproducts released during exponential growth of Gram-negative bacteria were analysed and compared by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-Page). The following bacterial strains were tested: Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Citrobacter freundii, Enterobacter cloacae, Serratia liquefaciens, Serratia rubidaea, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella minnesota, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas fluorescens. It is demonstrated by SDS-Page that members of one species show identical protein pattern, whereas different species show besides comparable protein bands a species characteristic pattern. All members of Enterobacteriaceae were sho…
