Jesu oppstandelse og naturlovene

2012

Author's version of an article published in the journal: Norsk filosofisk tidsskrift. Also available from the publisher at: http://www.idunn.no/ts/nft/2012/04/jesu_oppstandelse_og_naturlovene In this article, I defend the possibility of understanding the resurrection of Jesus as an event within the framework of natural laws. In this way, the resurrection is not necessarily contrary to Natural Science or belief in the existence of Natural laws. I offer, at the same time, a critique of one of David Hume's arguments against the belief in miracles. - I denne artikkelen forsøker jeg å åpne opp for den mulighet at Jesu oppstandelse ikke vil innebære et brudd med verken naturlover eller vitenskape…

Spatial correlations of vacuum fluctuations and the Casimir-Polder potential

2003

We calculate the Casimir-Polder intermolecular potential using an effective Hamiltonian recently introduced. We show that the potential can be expressed in terms of the dynamical polarizabilities of the two atoms and the equal-time spatial correlation of the electric field in the vacuum state. This gives support to an interesting physical model recently proposed in the literature, where the potential is obtained from the classical interaction between the instantaneous atomic dipoles induced and correlated by the vacuum fluctuations. Also, the results obtained suggest a more general validity of this intuitive model, for example when external boundaries or thermal fields are present.

Quantifying trade-offs between ecological gains, economic costs, and landowners' preferences in boreal mire protection.

2021

Private land often encompasses biodiversity features of high conservation value, but its protection is not straightforward. Commonly, landowners’ perspectives are rightfully allowed to influence conservation actions. This unlikely comes without consequences on biodiversity or other aspects such as economic considerations, but these consequences are rarely quantitatively considered in decision-making. In the context of boreal mire protection in Finland, we report how acknowledging landowners’ resistance to protection changes the combination of mires selected to conservation compared to ignoring landowners’ opinions. Using spatial prioritization, we quantify trade-offs arising between the amo…

Conservation of vascular plants in single large and several small mires: species richness, rarity and taxonomic diversity

1998

1. This study on vascular plant species of boreal spruce and pine mires concentrated on two geometrical principles: whether single large or several small (SLOSS) reserves contain more species and whether patch shape should be as nearly circular as possible. 2. SLOSS and patch shape have usually been tested by using species richness. Only a few studies have taken the rarity of species into account, and taxonomic diversity has never been used. In our study, all three of these factors were used. 3. Our results showed that the number of species was not related to the spruce mire size, but it increased in relation to the pine mire size. In contrast, the rarity score increased in relation to the …

Eiropas Savienības aizsargājamo upju biotopu un ūdens ekoloģiskās kvalitātes noteikšana: Ventas baseina piemērs

2018

Kāle M. 2018. Eiropas Savienības aizsargājamo upju biotopu un ūdens ekoloģiskās kvalitātes noteikšana: Ventas baseina piemērs. Bakalaura darbs. Rīga, Latvijas Universitāte, 45 lpp. Bakalaura darba mērķis ir noskaidrot Eiropas Savienības aizsargājamo upju biotopu ekoloģisko kvalitāti pēc sastopamo makrofītu sugu sastāva Ventas baseina mazajās un vidēji lielajās upēs. Darbā veikta ES aizsargājamo upju biotopu noteikšana un makrofītu sugu pētījumi ekoloģiskās kvalitātes indeksa aprēķināšanai, apsekojot 10 Ventas baseina vidēji lielās un mazās upes. Pētījuma rezultāti liecina, ka visi apsekotie upju posmi atbilst ES aizsargājamam upju biotopam 3260 “Upju straujteces un dabiski upju posmi” un Ve…

Rossiâ približaetsjâ k vremeni posle Putina - reprezentacii buduŝego rossii v mediatekstah : kritičeskij diskurs-analiz neskol'kih stat'ej v ros…

2016

Venäjän hallinto on 2010 -luvulla muuttunut autoritaarisempaan suuntaan ja se on käyttänyt sotilaallista interventiota saavuttaakseen strategisia päämääriään. Maan toimet ovat olleet näkyvästi esillä mediassa ja monia spekulaatioita on esitetty tulevista suurista muutoksista Venäjän hallinnossa. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa pyrin vastamaan kysymykseen, minkälaisen representaation mediatekstit tuottavat siitä, kun Venäjän federaation presidentti Vladimir Putin väistyy maan johdosta. Tutkimusmateriaalina käytän seitsemän tunnetun venäläisen politologin viimeaikaisia tekstejä. Työn teoreettisena pohjana on N. Fairclough’n teoria kriittisestä diskurssianalyysista. Vēja elektrostaciju ietekme uz putniem rudens migrācijas laikā Baltijas jūras piekrastē (Liepāja, Latvija): metodikas aprobācija un pirmie rezultāti

2015

Temporal multiplexing with adaptive optics for simultaneous vision.

2016

We present and test a methodology for generating simultaneous vision with a deformable mirror that changed shape at 50 Hz between two vergences: 0 D (far vision) and −2.5 D (near vision). Different bifocal designs, including toric and combinations of spherical aberration, were simulated and assessed objectively. We found that typical corneal aberrations of a 60-year-old subject changes the shape of objective through-focus curves of a perfect bifocal lens. This methodology can be used to investigate subjective visual performance for different multifocal contact or intraocular lens designs.
