Removal of 2-butoxyethanol gaseous emissions by biotrickling filtration packed with polyurethane foam

The removal of 2-butoxyethanol from gaseous emissions was studied using two biotrickling filters (BTF1 and BTF2) packed with polyurethane foam. Two different inoculum sources were used: a pure culture of Pseudomonas sp. BOE200 (BTF1) and activated sludge from a municipal wastewater treatment plant (BTF2). The bioreactors were operated at inlet loads (ILs) of 130 and 195 g m(-3) hour(-1) and at an empty bed residence time (EBRT) of 12.5s. Town population size and structuring into villages and households drive infectious disease risks in pre-healthcare Finland

Social life is often considered to cost in terms of increased parasite or pathogen risk. However, evidence for this in the wild remains equivocal, possibly because populations and social groups are often structured, which affects the local transmission and extinction of diseases. We test how the structuring of towns into villages and households influenced the risk of dying from three easily diagnosable infectious diseases—smallpox, pertussis and measles—using a novel dataset covering almost all of Finland in the pre-healthcare era (1800–1850). Aflatoxins and A. flavus Reduction in Loaf Bread through the Use of Natural Ingredients

In this study, the antifungal activity of yellow mustard (YMF) and oriental mustard (OMF) meal extracts against 14 strains of fungi was tested on a solid medium. The results obtained with the YMF were next confirmed in liquid medium determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the minimum fungicide concentration (MFC). Finally, the use of YMF as a natural preservative to extend the useful life of bread was evaluated. Proteomics as a way to identify extra-radicular fungal proteins from Glomus intraradices - RiT-DNA carrot root mycorrhizas

To identify fungal proteins involved in the arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis, root-inducing transferred-DNA transformed roots of carrot (Daucus carota L.) were in vitro inoculated with Glomus intraradices. Proteins extracted from the extra-radical fungus were analysed by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis. A fungal reference map displaying 438 spots was set up. Four proteins, among the 14 selected for tandem mass spectrometry analysis, were identified including a NmrA-like protein, an oxido-reductase, a heat-shock protein and an ATP synthase beta mitochondrial precursor. Exploring new drug candidates or drug targets against many illnesses is necessary as "traditional" treatments lose their effectivity. Cancer and sicknesses caused by protozoan parasites are among these diseases. Cell purine metabolism is an important drug target. Theoretically, inhibiting purine metabolism could stop the proliferation of unwanted cells. Purine metabolism is similar across all eukaryotes. Active Wild Food Practices among Culturally Diverse Groups in the 21st Century across Latgale, Latvia

Simple Summary A study in the bordering region of Latvia took place in order to investigate wild plant food uses. In total 72 interviewees reported food uses. The most represented uses of recorded plants were recreational tea; for jam; as snacks and soup; and drink. Interviewees also reported loss of foraging practice due to the habitat change as for example in case of caraway and chamomile. The results indicated that part of the reason for the main use of wild plants were linked to diet diversification.
