Some data on the transmission of the lives of saints between the Middle Ages and the modern era in the Crown of Aragon
2019
2012
Although abbot Martin is supposed to have collected and brought it all to Rome, as pope John IV had asked him to, the relics of salonitan martyrs are venerated since the Early Middle Ages in Split cathedral, settled in the octagon of Diocletian’s Palace, in the ager of Salona, former capital of Roman Dalmatia. Both main martyrs of the ancient city, first bishop Domnio and Anastasius fullonicus, are the medieval patrons of the cathedral beside Virgin Mary. Anastasius had previously been buried in a private mausoleum on the necropolis of Marusinac - mausoleum which gave birth to a pilgrimage ecclesial complex including a basilica gemina. Having first looked for graves ad sanctos at Manastirin…
2014
Two protohistoric Liburnian graves are the most ancient structures discovered in this year’s campaign which was essentially focused on the sector IV, south of the abbey church of Saint Peter in Osor. This area is particularly rich in medieval built tombs of the mo-nastic cemetery that developed next to the church and a mausoleum. The precise datation of this funeral building, which was being used in the 10th century, is still to be determined, but it has been confirmed that its construction preceded the foundation of the monastery, for at least few decades. A great many monks have chosen the mausoleum as their burial site. In the excavations of the first bay of the basilica other tombs were…
Will in Early Modern Philosophy
2013
Early modern philosophy inherited from the Middle Ages various very elaborate concepts of the will. It seems that little philosophical depth was added to the analyses of these concepts during this period. Rather, it is characteristic of the early modern discussions that traditional distinctions and theories were re-evaluated in new contexts, among which the mechanical approach to natural philosophy is of particular importance. Many philosophers were opposed to what was called ‘scholastic subtlety’, and defended instead very straightforward theories of the will.
2006
On the evidence of local court rolls, this paper studies the patters of violence in a valencian small town oriented to a great extent toward agrarian activities. It was especially a structural and daily violence, that usually it was not caused by habitual criminals but by common people and even by members of the ruling group. Abuse of force usually taked place from poweful to weak (from richs to poors, from masters to serviants, from husbands to wives, from christians to muslims), so that these forms of violence reaffirmed internal hierarchies that divided local community.
The Transformation of Private Space in the Later Middle Ages: Rooms and Living Standards in the Kingdom of Valencia (1280-1450)
2020
This article undertakes a quantitative and qualitative analysis of probate inventories from a selection of towns and highly urbanized areas from the kingdom of Valencia in the period 1280-1460, which are used to explore the inner distribution of more than 300 housings. Agreeing with the historiographical statement that this period was one of general improvement as to living standards and housing, this article reveals Valencian dwellings were provided with more specialized rooms since the late fourteenth century. This phenomenon was present particularly in the residences of townspeople living in large urban centers. Despite the predominant spatial simplicity of most late medieval housings, …
2020
We study here the presence of the numerous Genoese silk dealers in Valencia at the end of the XVth century: merchants, artisans, workers. This settlement signified a crucial economic change in the Valencian traditional silk industry with its Moorish background, and this, in consequence, facilitated reconversion of the textile industry and an increase in its trade. Moreover, international migration and the role of the Genoese silk industry facilitated social mobility during the low Middle Ages and contributed to the origin of the modern European system of relationships in the Mediterranean.
2020
Paraules clau: ball, prostitutes, rei Arlot, çabies, tarquena, edat mitjanaAbstract: This study shows the close relationship betwee…
Joan Roís de Corella, Lamentació de Mirra, de Narciso, de Píramus i Tisbe: edizione critica
2016
