Narratives of Spousal Support for the Careers of Men in Managerial Posts
2016
This article analyses the narratives of men managers to see how they perceive their wives' support in relation to their careers. Our aim is to focus on different forms of spousal support and explore how the support can evolve in the course of the men's careers. We are also interested in what kind of gender relations men produce when narrating their experiences of spousal support for their career. The research material comprises interviews with 29 managers who are fathers. In contrast to many previous studies, the results here suggest that spousal support is not a fixed or uncomplicated phenomenon but is constructed as various and flexible by men: negotiated , enriching and declining. The na…
Isyyden aika : historia, sukupuoli ja valta 1990-luvun isyyskeskusteluissa
2012
Samanaikaisesti kuitenkin perheasiantuntijoiden kirjoittamissa suosituissa isyysoppaissa varoiteltiin miehi…
Fathers in focus: two discursive analyses on addressing men, work and care
2022
We introduce in this chapter discourse analysis as a methodological tool for studying work-family issues, particularly those of men and fathers in work and care. Work and family involve complex processes and dynamics, where reconciling different interpretations of events are temporally and contextually changing. Current discourses on involved fatherhood raise many questions about men's work and family relationships and the role of care in their life. Here we present two empirical examples using discourse analysis to study work-family issues from a male gender perspective in the Finnish context. Finally, we discuss the (dis)advantages of using discursive analytical perspectives in work-famil…
Leadership practices in relation to men's work-family balance in Finnish organizations
2020
Leadership practices in organizations play an important role in shaping the conditions for employees’ work-family balance. Previous research on the topic has mainly focused on women; fathers are said to receive little support from leadership for combining work and family. In this study, the focus is on men working in six Finnish organizations representing male-dominated, female-dominated and gender-balanced organizations. Although Finland is considered a frontrunner in gender equality globally, Finnish women still carry the main responsibility for housework and child-care. Through a discursive approach, we seek to answer the following research question: What kind of discourses do working me…
Esimiesten käsitykset puheeksiottotilanteesta
2014
Aineiston analyysi toteutettiin noudattaen fe…

The role of heredity, other constitutional structural and behavioral factors in back function tests
2006
The objectives were 1) to determine the reliability of the measures of back function related factors, 2) to investigate the possibilities to detect changes in paraspinal muscles, and 3) to study the relative effects of heredity, constitutional and behavioral factors on three back function tests. Paraspinal muscle cross-sectional areas were obtained by magnetic resonance imaging from a sample of 210 men; anthropometric measures, isokinetic and psychophysical lifting capacity, and isometric back extension endurance tests were performed and current and past physical activity during leisure-time and at work were ascertained from a structured interview from a total sample of 600 men who were 35 …
