Towards chemical communication between gated nanoparticles.

2014

The design of comparatively simple and modularly configurable artificial systems able to communicate through the exchange of chemical messengers is, to the best of our knowledge, an unexplored field. As a proof-of-concept, we present here a family of nanoparticles that have been designed to communicate with one another in a hierarchical manner. The concept involves the use of capped mesoporous silica supports in which the messenger delivered by a first type of gated nanoparticle is used to open a second type of nanoparticle, which delivers another messenger that opens a third group of gated nanoobjects. We believe that the conceptual idea that nanodevices can be designed to communicate with …

Outdoor microalgae-based urban wastewater treatment: recent advances, applications and future perspectives

2021

[EN] Although microalgae-based wastewater treatment has been traditionally carried out in extensive waste stabilization ponds, recent trends focus on the use of microalgae to apply the circular economy principles in the wastewater treatment sector due to the capacity of algae to absorb carbon dioxide while recovering nutrients from sewage. To this aim, the development of new intensive microalgae-based systems with higher efficiency and level of process control is required. Results obtained for these systems at lab scale are generally promising. However, upscaling to outdoor conditions is often uncertain. Some advances have been made in terms of applying open systems at large scale. However,…

An analysis of the Spanish ceramic tile industry research contracts and patents

2018

In this work, we apply a systemic approach to the analysis of a particular geographic territory, the industrial district. We are particularly interested in analysing the interaction between the productive-technological environment and the scientific environment by an examination of research contracts and patents. Our analysis shows that R&D activity in the Spanish ceramic tile District Innovation System was mainly conducted by suppliers. Final producers’ innovation efforts were related to non-technological aspects and differentiation.

Portugal’s Estado Novo Regime and Apartheid South Africa: two dictatorships and their diplomatic exchanges

2019

This paper intends to analyze the foreign policies and diplomatic exchanges of Portugal’s Estado Novo Regime and Apartheid South Africa. In order to fully research these subjects, a search was made in the Portuguese National Records (Torre do Tombo) and the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. After a careful selection of the most important documents that served the purposes of this study, we performed a literature review of the subjects at hand, mainly in (Portuguese) history and international relations. The most important reasons for the proximity of these two foreign policies after World War II are extensively debated, whether militarily, economically and politically. The time-span of…

eWOM in reward-based crowdfunding platforms: a behavioral approach

2020

[EN] Electronic word of mouth (eWOM) plays a crucial role in influencing purchasing decisions of consumers in situations governed by asymmetric information. In this context, investors in reward-based crowdfunding platforms might modify their purchasing intentions according to recommendations of peers and/or experts. The goal of this paper is to analyze the power of eWOM to shape consumers’ purchasing decisions. We do so by conducting an experiment through Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT). This online experimental tool allows for an instant access to a large and culturally diverse subject pool, facilitating behavioral research requiring large amounts of subjects. By recreating a reward-based cro…

Reflecting on the Tensions of Research Utilization: Understanding the Coupling of Academic and User Knowledge

2018

This paper addresses debate of how research is utilized that questions measuring ‘acts of use’ of research (patents, spin-offs, or license income). A science system is a progressive business where research builds upon diverse existing research and knowledge. The extent of research utilization is determined by the extent to which prior research can feed into research that ultimately leads to acts of use. We use the term ‘knowledge transformers’ to refer to research users that transform academic knowledge into the socio-economic domain, and define ‘usability’ of prior research as the ease with which it may contribute to research that knowledge transformers are able to absorb. We argue that to…

Coprolites in natural traps : direct evidence of bone-eating carnivorans from the Late Miocene Batallones-3 site, Madrid, Spain

2021

We describe two carnivoran coprolites found in the pseudokarst natural carnivore trap of Batallones-3, from the Late Miocene of Spain. The larger one, comprising multiple indistinguishable fragments of broken and corroded bones, indicates that the producer of the dropping might have been highly capable of crushing the softer parts of large bones. On the other hand, the smaller one shows several relatively larger and more complete bone fragments, thus exhibiting a greater capacity to break and swallow large portions of bone. The external morphology of the large coprolite is similar to that of extant bears, whereas the smaller one more closely resembles that of the living insectivorous hyaeni…

Processes and experiences of Portugal's international recruitment scheme of Colombian physicians: Did it work?

2017

Abstract The Portuguese Ministry of Health performed five international recruitment rounds of Latin American physicians due to the need for physicians in certain geographic areas of the country and in some specialties, as a temporary solution to shortages. Among these recruitments is that of Colombian physicians in 2011 that was the largest of the five groups. This paper presents an evaluation of the international recruitment procedure of Colombian physicians based on the criteria of procedural outcomes and health system outcomes. The methodology used is qualitative, based on semi-structured interviews with key informants and Colombian physicians recruited in Portugal and also on documentar…
