Universities’ “Third” Mission, Industrial Conversion and the Quest for Surgical Masks: A Sicilian Tale from the First COVID-19 Lockdown
2022
This contribution is a brief testimony of a “third mission” project conducted in collaboration by two university departments that, despite the operational difficulties, and thanks to institutional support, have promoted an initiative aimed at the productive reconversion of a clothing sector company into a health sector company. The project highlights the benefits of integrating different areas of scientific expertise and highlights the role of full involvement and co-creation of a new production unit. Moreover, it is an example of the role that the university can play in a complex operational context in support of a constructive relationship between public and private actors for the develop…
The new face of university–business cooperation in Finland
2016
This paper analyses the development of university-business cooperation (UBC) in Finland in the context of the University Reform Act of 2009, drawing on the experience of four universities: Aalto University, University of Jyvaskyla, University of Turku, and Lappeenranta University of Technology. Six UBC dimensions are examined: institutional context, stakeholders, motivations, facilitators/inhibitors, benefits, and drawbacks. We find that UBC, while a relatively recent process, is growing fast in dynamic local innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystems. The University Act of 2009 had an uneven effect on the six UBC dimensions, with the most visible impact being manifested on motivations. Aal…
La performance delle imprese incubate nel Consorzio ARCA nel periodo 2003 – 2011: talune valutazioni sull’efficacia degli incubatori di imprese
2014
The Paper presents an analysis of the performance of the startups promoted by business incubator at the University of Palermo, providing a contribution to the debate on the "third mission" of the university and the creation of favorable conditions for its implementation.
Finnish higher education institutions' reactions to the 2015 asylum seeker situation : Motives, goals and future challenges
2017
In 2015, military conflicts and related humanitarian crises neighbouring areas of Europe made millions of people leave their homes. Europe, including Finland, experienced a rapid increase in the number of asylum seekers. In this article, we examine the reception of asylum seekers by Finnish higher education institutions mainly by analysing media data written about and written by universities and universities of applied sciences in Finland. The higher education institutions, in keeping with their societal role, spontaneously developed various kinds of pop-up courses, co-operation projects and other activities for asylum seekers. These activities range from crisis work to medical clinics and …

Total absorption spectroscopy study of the β decay of 86Br and 91Rb
2017
The beta decays of 86Br and 91Rb have been studied using the total absorption spectroscopy technique. The radioactive nuclei were produced at the Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line facility in Jyväskylä and further purified using the JYFLTRAP. 86Br and 91Rb are considered to be major contributors to the decay heat in reactors. In addition, 91Rb was used as a normalization point in direct measurements of mean gamma energies released in the beta decay of fission products by Rudstam et al. assuming that this decay was well known from high-resolution measurements. Our results show that both decays were suffering from the Pandemonium effect and that the results of Rudstam et al. should be renor…
Total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy of the β-delayed neutron emitters 87Br, 88Br, and 94Rb
2017
We investigate the decay of 87,88Br and 94Rb using total absorption γ -ray spectroscopy. These important fission products are β-delayed neutron emitters. Our data show considerable βγ intensity, so far unobserved in high-resolution γ -ray spectroscopy, from states at high excitation energy. We also find significant differences with the β intensity that can be deduced from existing measurements of the β spectrum. We evaluate the impact of the present data on reactor decay heat using summation calculations. Although the effect is relatively small it helps to reduce the discrepancy between calculations and integral measurements of the photon component for 235U fission at cooling times in the r…
Engine/Transmission Matching
2014
This chapter deals with the forecasting of vehicle performance on the road, according to the installed engine. It begins with Section 1, which shows the calculation of the resistance to motion, that is, the forces that the vehicle must overcome to advance on flat roads and uphill. The calculation excludes accidental resistance in curves because it is not essential for predicting the behavior of the vehicle on the road. Section 2 begins with the power characteristic, the forecast by traction–speed and power–speed diagrams, calculation of gear ratios, and then passing to the limits to the estimated acceleration, feature consumption, and distance. This chapter concludes with a section on the d…
Counting the minimum node weight spanning trees for broadcast transmission in wireless sensor networks
2017
Asymmetric effects of monetary policy shocks across US states
2019
This paper provides new empirical evidence of the asymmetric effects of monetary policy shocks across regions. Using a measure of unanticipated changes in the Fed's policy rates over the period 1969Q3–2008Q4 and a local projection method extended to account for spatial effects, we find that monetary policy tightening leads to a long-lasting decrease in states' real personal income, with asymmetric effects across states that are amplified by spatial spillovers. The paper then investigates the role played by several transmission channels finding larger contractionary effects of monetary policy tightening in states with higher manufacturing share, smaller firms, smaller banks and higher house …
