Bax-derived membrane-active peptides act as potent and direct inducers of apoptosis in cancer cells.
2011
SUMMARYAlthough many cancer cells are primed for apoptosis, they usually develop resistance to cell death at multiple levels. Permeabilization of the outer mitochondrial membrane, which is mediated by proapoptotic Bcl-2 family members like Bax, is considered as a point-of-no-return for initiating apoptotic cell death. This crucial role has placed Bcl-2 family proteins as recurrent targets for anticancer drug development. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new concept based on using minimal active version of Bax to induce cell death independently of endogenous Bcl-2 proteins. We show that membrane-active segments of Bax can directly induce the release of mitochondria-residing apoptogenic fac…
Energetic coupling between plastids and mitochondria drives CO2 assimilation in diatoms.
2015
International audience; Diatoms are one of the most ecologically successful classes of photosynthetic marine eukaryotes in the contemporary oceans. Over the past 30 million years, they have helped to moderate Earth's climate by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, sequestering it via the biological carbon pump and ultimately burying organic carbon in the lithosphere. The proportion of planetary primary production by diatoms in the modern oceans is roughly equivalent to that of terrestrial rainforests. In photosynthesis, the efficient conversion of carbon dioxide into organic matter requires a tight control of the ATP/NADPH ratio which, in other photosynthetic organisms, relies prin…

Beyond the myth: A social interpretation about the mosaic of the Twelve Labours of Hercules (Liria, Valencia)
2018
On the occasion of the centenary of the mosaic’s discovery of the Twelve Labours of Hercules in Liria (Valencia), this article aims to approach to some aspects overlooked in previous works. Within the study of Roman domestic spaces, the room’s decoration is an essential factor in order to understand its function. Over the years, several studies have focused their efforts on a descriptive analysis of the mosaic, mentioning only the social interpretation, whereas the current trends try to analyze other aspects such as the study of elites and their symbolism. For this reason, our goal in this article is to analyze the social aspect of this pavement, which particular choice of the central motif…
mtDNA analysis of the human remains buried in the sarcophagus of Federico II
2005
Abstract The sarcophagus containing the remains of Federico II, located in the Cathedral of Palermo (Sicily, Italy), was opened on 1998 to perform a multidisciplinary survey [1]. Next to the remains of Federico II and in close contact with them were laying two other skeletons belonging, according to historical records, to Pietro II di Aragona and to an anonymous person (“The Third Individual”), probably a woman. The bones appeared severely deteriorated. Chemical analysis performed on bone samples excluded that the bodies underwent some kind of embalming process. The analysis of mtDNA from bone samples taken from the three skeletons was successful in only one of the two labs involved. The HV…
Biomolecular study of the human remains from tomb 5859 in the Etruscan necropolis of Monterozzi Tarquinia (Vitarbo, Italy)
2004
Abstract Archaeological excavation in an Etruscan room tomb, from the Monterozzi necropolis in Tarquinia led to the recovery of four individuals. It was hypothesized that they could be members of a single family group. As both archaeological data and classical anthropological analysis provided little information in this direction, ancient DNA (aDNA) was extracted from bone and tooth fragments of the individuals. For each subject HVR-I of the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) was cloned and sequenced. To identify the sex of the individuals, amelogenine and SRY genes were analysed. Short tandem repeat (STR) characterization was also performed. DNA studies were preceded by the evaluation of amino acid…
Ancient DNA provides no evidence for independent domestication of cattle in Mesolithic Rosenhof, Northern Germany
2008
Abstract Recent studies of modern and ancient mtDNA in domesticated and wild cattle has indicated that members of the extinct Near Eastern aurochs population (Bos primigenius primigenius) were the wild progenitors of European domesticated cattle (Bos taurus) (Bollongino, R., Edwards, C.J., Burger, J., Alt, K.W., Bradley, D.G., 2006. Early history of European domestic cattle as revealed by ancient DNA. Biol. Lett. 2, 155–159; Edwards, C.J., Bollongino, R., Scheu, A., Chamberlain, A., Tresset, A., Vigne, J.-D., Baird, J.F., Larson, G., Ho, S.Y.W., Heupink, T.H., Shapiro, B., Freeman, A.R., Thomas, M.G., Arbogast, R.-M., Arndt, B., Bartosiewicz, L., Benecke, N., Budja, M., Chaix, L., Choyke, A…
Omaggio a Dedalo. Un laboratorio, un libro
2021
The essay recounts a design experience in which myth is intertwined with contemp…
Biological activities of Schottenol and Spinasterol, two natural phytosterols present in argan oil and in cactus pear seed oil, on murine miroglial B…
2014
International audience; The objective of this study was to evaluate the biological activities of the major phytosterols present in argan oil (AO) and in cactus seed oil (CSO) in BV2 microglial cells. Accordingly, we first determined the sterol composition of AO and CSO, showing the presence of Schottenol and Spinasterol as major sterols in AO. While in CSO, in addition to these two sterols, we found mainly another sterol, the Sitosterol. The chemical synthesis of Schottenol and Spinasterol was performed. Our results showed that these two phytosterols, as well as sterol extracts from AO or CSO, are not toxic to microglial BV2 cells. However, treatments by these phytosterols impact the mitoch…
Arquitectura modernista valenciana: el Círculo Frutero Burrianense
2011
