Peat humic acid properties and factors influencing their variability in a temperate bog ecosystem

2013

Studies of the properties of soil organic matter are essential for understanding the humification reactions and soil diagenesis processes. The aim of this study is to analyse properties of peat and peat humic acids as well as factors influencing their variability. Humic acids isolated from an ombrotrophic bog peat profile were used as study objects. Relations among peat age, decomposition and humification degree, botanical composition, and properties of peat humic acids (elemental, functional composition, spectral characteristics) were studied. The variability of peat properties was found to be less significant than the differences in the properties of peat-forming living matter, which indi…

Characterization of Humic Acids from Raised Bog Peat

2014

Abstract Humic substances form most of the organic component of soil, peat and natural waters, but their structure and properties are very much dependent on the source. The aim of this study was to characterize humic acids from raised bog peat to evaluate the homogeneity of humic acids isolated from the bog bodies and to study peat humification impact on the properties of humic acids. Peat humic acids (HA) have an intermediate position between the living organic matter and coal organic matter, with their structure formed in a process where the relatively labile moieties (carbohydrates, amino acids, etc.) are destroyed, and thermodynamically more stable aromatic and polycyclic structures eme…

Separation of Enantiomers in a Monolayer of Racemic 3-Hexadecyl-oxy-propane-1,2-diol

1993

Monolayers of a racemic mixture and of the pure S enantiomer of 3-hexadecyloxy-propane-1,2-diol have been characterized by thermodynamic measurements at the air/water interface as well as by fluorescence microscopy. The critical temperatire T c , the limiting molecular area at high pressure and the pressure π c corresponding to the observed main phase transition, derived from the isotherms, slightly depend on chiral purity

Characterization of Interaction Between Humic Acids and Buckminsterfullerene Using Flourescene Spectroscopy

2017

The interaction between buckminsterfullerene C60 and humic acids (HA) of different origins was compared using fluorescence spectroscopy as a function of pH, humic acid concentration, ionic strength. Binding constants between fullerene and humic acids were calculated. It can be suggested that the complexation was driven by hydrophobic interactions depending on the properties of the interacting compounds. Hydrophobic interaction model as indicated by linear Stern-Volmer plots and high Kd values is characterizing the interaction between buckminsterfullerene C60 and humic acids The results of this study support the development of an understanding of the fate of nanomaterials in the environment …

ChemInform Abstract: Chemical Compounds and Toxicological Assessments of Drinking Water Stored in Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) Bottles: A Source …

2012

A declaration of conformity according to European regulation No. 10/2011 is required to ensure the safety of plastic materials in contact with foodstuffs. This regulation established a positive list of substances that are authorized for use in plastic materials. Some compounds are subject to restrictions and/or specifications according to their toxicological data. Despite this, the analysis of PET reveals some non-intentionally added substances (NIAS) produced by authorized initial reactants and additives. Genotoxic and estrogenic activities in PET-bottled water have been reported. Chemical mixtures in bottled water have been suggested as the source of these toxicological effects. Furthermo…

Biodegradable lignin nanocontainers

2014

The abundant biomaterial lignin was used to prepare hollow nanocapsules by interfacial polyaddition in inverse miniemulsions. These cross-linked lignin nanocontainers can be loaded with hydrophilic substances which can be released by an enzymatic trigger from natural plant extracts revealing them as potential nanocontainers for agricultural applications.

Perception des molécules chimiosensorielles en mélange : impact du métabolisme périphérique

2015

The chemosensory system is highly sensitive and discriminant. To ensure these properties, rapid and effective mechanisms are necessary to eliminate chemosensory molecules reaching the perception interface. The xenobiotic metabolizing enzymes (XMEs) present in the peri-receptor space may participate to the clearance of molecules thus limiting chemosensory receptors saturation and promoting the termination of the signal. In our PhD thesis, the involvement of these enzymes in the detection of stimuli in mixture was assessed in two animal models allowing to test complementary aspects. In Drosophila melanogaster, a sensory exposure to caffeine causes a reversible alteration of the taste percepti…

Labile carbon addition affects soil organisms and N availability but not cellulose decomposition in clear-cut Norway spruce forests

2014

We assessed the effects of sucrose addition on the biological and chemical properties of organic soil in clear-cut Norway spruce forests managed with or without wood-ash fertilization and mechanical site preparation. Sucrose addition increased the abundances of enchytraeids and tardigrades and soil moisture percentage in the clear-cut areas. Sucrose also increased nematode abundance in the non-fertilized plots. Sucrose reduced the pool of waterextractable NH4-N in the soil in the first year, but increased it in the second year. Sucrose addition did not affect the decomposition rate of cellulose strips. The biomass of ground vegetation was not affected by sucrose. Carbohydrate addition seems…

Determination of enzymatic activities using a miniaturized system as a rapid method to assess soil quality

2014

Soil quality determination requires the analysis of a number of soil attributes using different approaches. In recent years, one of the most promising approaches has been the determination of enzymatic activities. Generally, only a few enzymes have been analysed and related with other parameters, such as total carbon, nitrogenous content or microbial biomass carbon. The aim of this work was to investigate the possible use of the API ZYM strip, a semi-quantitative miniaturised system that determines 19 enzymatic activities, to study soil quality. To this end, we tested the system in different soil types, including albicArenosols, mollicLeptosols, rendzicLeptosols, haplicLeptosols, and calcar…

Increased conformational rigidity of humic substances by oxidative biomimetic catalysis

2005

A synthetic water-soluble meso-tetra(2,6-dichloro-3-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrinate of iron(III) chloride, Fe(TDCPPS)Cl, was employed as a biomimetic catalyst in the oxidative coupling of terrestrial humic materials. High-performance size-exclusion chromatography (HPSEC), solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (CPMAS-(13)C NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and diffuse reflectance infrared spectroscopy (DRIFT) were used to follow conformational and structural changes brought about in different humic materials by the oxidative coupling. Increase in apparent weight-average molecular weight (Mw(a)) occurred invariably for all humic substances with the oxidative polymerization catalyzed …
