In Silico Design Enables the Rapid Production of Surface-Active Colloidal Amphiphiles

2020

A new technology platform built on the integration of theory and experiments to enable the design of Janus colloids with precision control of surface anisotropy and amphiphilicity could lead to a disruptive transformation in the next generation of surfactants, photonic or phononic materials, and coatings. Here, we exploit molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to guide the rational design of amphiphilic polymer Janus colloids by Flash NanoPrecipitation (FNP), a method capable of the production of colloids with complex structure without the compromise of reduced scalability. Aided by in silico design, we show in experiments that amphiphilic Janus colloids can be produced using a unique blend of…

Air gasification of wood chips, wood pellets and grass pellets in a bubbling fluidized bed reactor

2021

Abstract Gasification is an attractive method for biomass-to-energy conversion and fluidized bed design is one of the best options for large scale operation. A bubbling fluidized bed reactor was used to analyze the effects of biomass type, equivalence ratio (ER) and temperature for product gas compositions. Wood chips, wood pellets and grass pellets were gasified between 650 °C and 800 °C temperature. The ER was varied between 0.08 and 0.16. Gasification of grass pellets was difficult at 800 °C due to agglomeration and the gas composition was poor compared to wood. The reactor performances improved over the temperature and 650 °C was not sufficient to achieve a reasonable carbon conversion.…

Linear viscoelastic properties of high reclaimed asphalt content mixes with biobinders

2017

The use of high Reclaimed Asphalt (RA) content mixtures together with binders produced from renewable resources (biobinders) is one of the current challenges in pavement engineering research. On the one hand, RA has been used for decades, but there are still some concerns about its performance, especially when high contents are used (>30%). On the other hand, biobinders are relatively new materials, which have to be deeply characterised and studied in order to develop good practices for their use. In this paper, linear viscoelastic properties of biobinders and bio-mixtures manufactured with high RA content and biobinders are analysed and discussed. High-modulus mixtures with 50% RA were…

Brookite, the Least Known TiO2 Photocatalyst

2013

Brookite is the least studied TiO2 photocatalyst due to the difficulties usually encountered in order to obtain it as a pure phase. In this review, a comprehensive survey of the different methods available for preparing brookite powders and films is reported. Attention has been paid both to the most traditional methods, such as hydrothermal processes at high temperatures and pressures, and to environmentally benign syntheses using water soluble compounds and water as the solvent. Papers reporting the photocatalytic activity of pure and brookite-based samples have been reviewed.

Innovations in Extractive Phases for In-Tube Solid-Phase Microextraction Coupled to Miniaturized Liquid Chromatography: A Critical Review

2020

Over the past years, a great effort has been devoted to the development of new sorbents that can be used to pack or to coat extractive capillaries for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME). Many of those efforts have been focused on the preparation of capillaries for miniaturized liquid chromatography (LC) due to the reduced availability of capillary columns with appropriate dimensions for this kind of system. Moreover, many of the extractive capillaries that have been used for IT-SPME so far are segments of open columns from the gas chromatography (GC) field, but the phase nature and dimensions are very limited. In particular, polar compounds barely interact with stationary GC phas…

Multifunctional Carrier Based on Halloysite/Laponite Hybrid Hydrogel for Kartogenin Delivery

2018

[Image: see text] A novel carrier system based on halloysite nanotubes (HNT), for the potential intraarticular delivery of kartogenin (KGN) by means laponite (Lap) hydrogel (HNT/KGN/Lap), is developed. The drug was first loaded into HNT, and the hybrid composite obtained was used as filler for laponite hydrogel. Both the filler and the hydrogel were thoroughly investigated by several techniques and the hydrogel morphology was imaged by transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the gelating ability of laponite in the presence of the filler and the rheological properties of the hybrid hydrogel were also investigated. The kinetic release of kartogenin from HNT and HNT/Lap hybrid hydrogel …

Strontium and iron-doped barium cobaltite prepared by solution combustion synthesis: exploring a mixed-fuel approach for tailored intermediate temper…

2013

Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-? (BSCF) powders were prepared by solution combustion synthesis using single and double fuels. The effect of the fuel mixture on the main properties of this well-known solid oxide fuel cell cathode material with high oxygen ion and electronic conduction was investigated in detail. Results showed that the fuel mixture significantly affected the area-specific resistance of the BSCF cathode materials, by controlling the oxygen deficiency and stabilizing the Co2+ oxidation state. It was demonstrated that high fuel-to-metal cations molar ratios and high reducing power of the combustion fuel mixture are mainly responsible for the decreasing of the area-specific resistance o…

Phase separation of binary mixtures in thin films: Effects of an initial concentration gradient across the film.

2012

We study the kinetics of phase separation of a binary (A,B) mixture confined in a thin film of thickness $D$ by numerical simulations of the corresponding Cahn-Hilliard-Cook (CHC) model. The initial state consisted of 50$%$ A:50$%$ B with a concentration gradient across the film, i.e., the average order parameter profile is ${\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{\mathrm{av}}(z,t=0)=(2z/D\ensuremath{-}1){\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{g},\phantom{\rule{0.28em}{0ex}}0\ensuremath{\leqslant}z\ensuremath{\leqslant}D$, for various choices of ${\ensuremath{\Psi}}_{g}$ and $D$. The equilibrium state (for time $t\ensuremath{\rightarrow}\ensuremath{\infty}$) consists of coexisting A-rich and B-rich domains separated by interfac…
