Repeated evolution of soldier sub-castes suggests parasitism drives social complexity in stingless bees

The differentiation of workers into morphological castes represents an important evolutionary innovation that is thought to improve division of labor in insect societies. Given the potential benefits of task-related worker differentiation, it is puzzling that physical worker castes, such as soldiers, are extremely rare in social bees and absent in wasps. Following the recent discovery of soldiers in a stingless bee, we studied the occurrence of worker differentiation in 28 stingless bee species from Brazil and found that several species have specialized soldiers for colony defence. Differential models of twin correlations in skew for body-mass index (BMI)

Background Body Mass Index (BMI), like most human phenotypes, is substantially heritable. However, BMI is not normally distributed; the skew appears to be structural, and increases as a function of age. Moreover, twin correlations for BMI commonly violate the assumptions of the most common variety of the classical twin model, with the MZ twin correlation greater than twice the DZ correlation. Ligand‐Specific αβ and γδ T Cell Responses in Childhood Tuberculosis

The alphabeta and gammadelta T cell responses were analyzed in the peripheral blood of children affected by active tuberculosis (TB) and in healthy children who tested positive (PPD+) or negative (PPD-) for purified protein derivative. PPD+ healthy and diseased children responded equally well to PPD in vitro. In contrast, only 18% of PPD+ TB patients responded to peptide p38G derived from the 38-kDa protein of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Prevalence of diphtheria toxin antibodies in human sera from a cross-section of the Italian population.

Abstract A polycentric study was carried out between 1993 and 1995 in order to evaluate diphtheria immunity on a representative sample of population from different areas of Italy. To determine diphtheria antitoxin, sera from 5187 apparently healthy subjects, divided according to sex and age groups, were titrated using an ELISA indirect method. A basic protective titre of diphtheria antitoxin (>0.01 IU ml −1 ) was found in 4080 (78.6%) subjects. No statistically significant differences between males and females were observed. Emergence of tularemia in France: paradigm of the Burgundy region

International audience; We report three consecutive cases of tularemia occurring in Burgundy, France, a region previously considered not endemic for tularemia. The patients presented with varied and unspecific clinical manifestations. The epidemiological circumstances, especially the mode of contamination, were not particularly suggestive of tularemia. Serological diagnosis was delayed in two cases because of the lack of significant antibody titers at the time of admission. Safety, reactogenicity and immunogenicity of GSK Biologicals` hexavalent DTPa-HBV-IPV/Hib vaccine (Infanrix(R)hexa) was assessed when used for primary vaccination at 3, 4 and 5 months of age (N = 2163), compared to the separate administration of DTPa-IPV/Hib and HBV vaccines (N = 720). A similar safety and reactogenicity profile was demonstrated for both vaccine regimens, as well as a good immune response for all antigen components. By offering protection against six diseases in it series of single injections, the hexavalent DTPa-HBV-IPV/Hib vaccine was shown to be a safe, well tolerated and immunogenic alternative to primary immunization with licensed separately administered vaccines.
