The keyboard as a part of visual, auditory and kinesthetic processing in sight-reading at the piano
2009
Sight-reading at the piano requires coordination of multiple modalities—visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Visual feedback (obtained by looking at the keyboard and the fingers) is usually regarded as one means by which pianists guide musical performance, but few researchers have focused on the organisational aspects implicit in the information provided by the keyboard. This study investigated the role of the keyboard with respect to the visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities involved in sight-reading. Five pianists sight-read two compositions, each in a different musical style. They were then interviewed in a semi-structured interview format. A qualitative content analysis was made fr…
Textos de Identidad Multimodales en el Aula de Inglés como Lengua Extranjera: Una Herramienta para Desarrollo de Habilidades Cognitivas y Académicas …
2016
[EN] The present action-research project in progress deals with the production and evaluation of “identity texts” (Cummins & Early, 2011) from EFL students in the context of a specific subject within the major of English Teacher in Primary Education at the Faculty of Education of the Universitat de València. This project is part of a larger “Innovation in education” project, whose main objective is to promote the use of identity texts as the key strategy of the “teaching for linguistic transfer” approach (Cummins, 2005b). Identity texts foster learners’ cognitive and academic transfer from their first language (L1) to their second or foreign language (L2/FL), and offer students an opportuni…
Instrucción en estrategias de comprensión lectora mediante enseñanza recíproca: efectos del agrupamiento de los estudiantes
2013
The aim of this study was to compare the effects of two grouping formats on the reading comprehension. Reading comprehension Instruction used reciprocal teaching (RT) that is an instructional procedure to teach students cognitive strategies that might lead to improved reading comprehension. A sample of 43 students in the fourth year of primary education was selected: 18 children were instructed in regular classroom (GG), 8 were instructed in small group (PG), while the remaining 17 made up the comparison group (GC). Two types of comprehension measures were used: tasks of specific effects (getting the main idea, comprehension-monitoring test) and transfer effect measures (standardized test, …
In Search for an Integrated Design Basis for Audio and Haptics
2008
Audio and haptics as interaction modalities share properties, which make them highly appropriate to be handled within a single conceptual framework. This paper outlines such framework, gaining ingredients from the literature concerning cross-modal integration and embodied cognition. The resulting framework is bound up with a concept of physical embodiment, which has been introduced within several scientific disciplines to reveal the role of bodily experience and the corresponding mental imagery as the core of meaning-creation. In addition to theoretical discussion, the contribution of the proposed approach in design is outlined.
REALIZATION OF INTEGRATED LEARNING IN STUDY PRACTICE: PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS EXPERIENCES
2018
The integrated teaching is important tool for promoting the development of students’ critical and creative thinking, self-cognition, learning and cooperation skills and cultural understanding in a constantly changing world. In Latvia, integrated curriculum has become a challenge for educational reforms, too. Latvian teacher educators are looking for appropriate Curriculum content and strategies, in order to promote pre-service teachers with understanding of integrated learning, courage and ability to implement them in professional activities. The aim of an article is analyze possibilities how to improve the pre-service teachers’ readiness to plan integrated lessons for study practice. Metho…
Touchless gestural interfaces for networked public displays
2015
In the near future, we can easily imagine a significant increment in diffusion of networked public displays, as well as novel interaction modalities used in their applications. In the following, we present two of the main challenges related to networked displays we are dealing with, with a particular focus on touchless gestural interfaces: overcoming interaction blindness (i.e. enable users to immediately guess the interactivity of the display, and the gestural nature of it) and performing evaluations in-the-wild (i.e. outside any controlled environment).
The addition of interleukin-2 to cyclophosphamide therapy can facilitate tumor growth of B16 melanoma.
1995
The role of interleukin-2 (IL-2) on tumor growth of B16F10 melanoma cells was assessed in two sets of mice with different immune status: normal (immunocompetent) mice and immunodeficient mice. The two sets of animals were treated with cyclophosphamide (CY) or IL-2 alone or with a combined therapy of CY+IL-2. On days 6 and 10 after tumor cell injection, we evaluated the incidence of hepatic B16 melanoma metastases and the percentage of hepatic volume occupied by metastatic tissue. We observed that the CY alone (300 mg/kg, days 3 and 8 post-tumoral inoculation) significantly reduced tumor growth in all treated mice; however, CY proved more effective in normal recipients than in immunodeficien…
L'émergence de la notion de "pôle d'échanges" : entre interconnexion des réseaux et structuration des territoires
2008
This article explores the concept of " interchange station ", through an analysis terminology. The evolution of semantic networks nodes that we detail in this work, shows a more off their dual dimension to both network element and territory. Based on a literature review, this terminology will help clarify neighbours words used in different contexts. The article demonstrate that the emergence of the term " interchange station " and its equivalent " park and ride" makes sense in relation to the evolution of these devices. Indeed, the need to "appoint" those places complex demonstrates their importance in the organization of networks and urban functions (distribution of the habitat, activity, …
Multimodal Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Aneurysm Surgery
2017
Following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage, the primary goal of treatment is to exclude the vascular malformation from the intracranial circulation, while preserving the parent artery. In unruptured aneurysms, the decision whether to treat or observe the malformation is made on a case-by-case basis. In this regard, the ISUIA (International Study of Unruptured Intracranial Aneurysms) investigators suggested that aneurysm size and location were independent predictors for aneurysm rupture.1 ISUIA examined 1692 patients with cerebral aneurysms with a mean follow-up time of 4.1 years. Rupture rates differed depending on size and location, ranging from 0% in aneurysms <7 mm located in the in…
A global model for the estimation of transport costs
2019
This paper presents a model of transport cost determinants that corrects the specification problems observed in the transport cost equations in previous literature. The model includes freight transport supply and demand, as well as infrastructure quality and non-time-varying fixed effects related to the route, the exporting company, its strategy and the product. In addition, when defining the origin-destination routes, the model more appropriately accounts for economies of network and economies of scale. In order to build the database, 583 personal interviews were conducted over the course of 2011 with producing companies that ship goods and with the logistics operators. As a result, 305 ro…
