Gender, identity and representation in video games : an elective discourse-oriented course for Finnish EFL upper secondary school students
2015
Tämän pro gradu -tutkielman tavoitteena on tuottaa lukio-opetukseen tarkoitettu kurssimateriaalipaketti, jonka avulla kuka tahansa opettaja pystyy lähestymään naisten representaatiota videopeleissä …
Narratives of femininity as means of promotion : a case study on Dove's advertisement and audience responses
2017
Tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten yritykset ja organisaatiot voivat hyödyntää kohderyhmiensä palautetta mainontansa kehittämisessä houkuttelevammaksi yleisöilleen. Sosiaalisen median nousun myötä myös yritysten ja asiakkaiden välinen suhde on murroksessa, kun yritysten sijaan potentiaalisilla asiakkailla on valta määritellä, millaista sisältöä he haluavat. Tutkielma on tapaustutkimus Doven Real Beauty -kampanjan kahdesta mainoksesta, #ChooseBeautiful ja #MyBeautyMySay. Tutkimuksessa tutkitaan, miten mainokset luovat narratiiveja naiseudesta hyödyntäen semioottisia ja diskursiivisia resursseja, ja miten näiden narratiivien avulla pyritään mainostamaan tuotetta ja brändiä. Lisäksi …
Interactive multiobjective optimization for finding the most preferred exercise therapy modality in knee osteoarthritis
2022
Abstract Background There are no explicit guidelines or tools available to support clinicians in selecting exercise therapy modalities according to the characteristics of individual patients despite the apparent need. Objective This study develops a methodology based on a novel multiobjective optimization model and examines its feasibility as a decision support tool to support healthcare professionals in comparing different modalities and identifying the most preferred one based on a patient’s needs. Methods Thirty-one exercise therapy modalities were considered from 21 randomized controlled trials. A novel interactive multiobjective optimization model was designed to characterize the effic…
Planting in the pandemic : surveillance on social media
2023
This article looks at interest-driven and informal social media practices that have flourished in the pandemic period and its ensuing renaissance of domesticity. It investigates how tending plants and discussing them on social media serve as a particular site for connecting around loving and taking care of plants. Its focus is on the discursive means with which posters – guided by social media algorithms – rhetorically co-construct a morally acceptable version of a pandemic lifestyle around houseplants. More specifically, drawing on multimodal discourse studies, critical sociolinguistics and work on digital surveillance, it investigates how members of a Finland-based social media site obser…
Multi-modality of polysomnography signals’ fusion for automatic sleep scoring
2019
Objective: The study aims to develop an automatic sleep scoring method by fusing different polysomnography (PSG) signals and further to investigate PSG signals’ contribution to the scoring result. Methods: Eight combinations of four modalities of PSG signals, namely electroencephalogram (EEG), electrooculogram (EOG), electromyogram (EMG), and electrocardiogram (ECG) were considered to find the optimal fusion of PSG signals. A total of 232 features, covering statistical characters, frequency characters, time-frequency characters, fractal characters, entropy characters and nonlinear characters, were derived from these PSG signals. To select the optimal features for each signal fusion, four wi…
A time estimation task as a possible measure of emotions: difference depending on the nature of the stimulus used
2015
Objective: Time perception is fundamental for human experience. A topic which has attracted the attention of researchers for long time is how the stimulus sensory modality (e.g., images vs. sounds) affects time judgments. However, so far, no study has directly compared the effect of two sensory modalities using emotional stimuli on time judgments. Methods: In the present two studies, healthy participants were asked to estimate the duration of a pure sound preceded by the presentation of odors vs. emotional videos as priming stimuli (implicit emotion-eliciting task). During the task, skin conductance (SC) was measured as an index of arousal. Results: Olfactory stimuli resulted in an increase…
Spaces of transit intermodality in Manila, Philippines
2013
International audience; Public transportation in the Philippines' capital Manila takes different forms : elevated subway (LRT and MRT systems) and ground transportation (provincial and local buses, jeepneys, trisikel and pedicabs, taxis). This presentation, based on field work in February, April and December 2012, will examine the characteristics of transfer/connecting areas between different modes of transportation (such as LRT to jeepneys, LRT to MRT, ...) in several locations of the Manila metropolitan area, in order to determine some of the problems making transfer difficult, but also the commercial activity generated by heavy pedestrian and passenger traffic in and around the transit c…

The effect of writing modality on recollection in children and adolescents
2019
We set out to assess the extent to which writing modality affects recollection in children and adolescents. We examined 10- to 11-year-old children’s (N = 63) and 16-year-old adolescents’ (N = 43) handwriting, keyboarding with a laptop computer and keyboarding with a touchscreen tablet computer or mobile phone in a within-subjects experimental design. Participants were instructed to write down stories dictated to them in the three writing modalities. Recollection of the stories was assessed using free recall of details in the stories. The results indicate that the writing modality affects recollection, handwriting leading to better recollection. However, currently, digital writing tools are…
Chaining in interpreted interaction : Finnish Sign Language interpreting in an English-medium educational setting
2016
Interaction is always multimodal. Multimodality means that meanings are conveyed by using different semiotic resources, such as language, gestures, facial expressions, written text and pictures. Even though it is considered that also interpreted interaction is multimodal, this aspect of the interpreters’ work is often neglected in research and focus on how interpreters utilize multimodality in their work is called for. In this study one English-medium lecture that is interpreted into Finnish Sign Language is analyzed. The lecture’s duration is approximately one hour. The focus is on one multimodal phenomenon: chaining. Chaining means that different semiotic resources are utilized, for examp…
