Incorporating classified dispersal assumptions in predictive distribution models – A case study with grasshoppers and bush-crickets
2011
Abstract Current and future species distributions depend on environmental conditions, but the ability of species to shift their range boundaries or to expand their distribution ranges in response to global change also depends on their dispersal capacity. Dispersal capacity, however, has often been neglected in previous studies that either assumed no-dispersal or full dispersal, both of which are unrealistic for most taxa. The aims of this study are (i) to identify the predictors of the present spatial distribution on a regional scale for 13 grasshoppers and bush-crickets, and (ii) to derive predictions of their future distributions under climate change by applying different dispersal capaci…
Crowdsourcing Cultural Heritage: From 3D Modeling to the Engagement of Young Generations
2016
Monitoring, digitizing and archiving museum artworks represent an important socio-cultural accomplishment and an overcoming in digital preservation today. Cultural heritage is constantly under threat of terrorist attacks and natural disaster. The high costs related to documentation task have prevented a constantly and massive survey activity. The low cost 3D image based acquisition and elaboration techniques of an object, allow to carry out a 3D photorealistic model in a short time. Therefore, a lot of museum adopted these techniques for the artworks archiving. Crowdsourcing activities can significantly speed up survey and elaboration procedures. If, on the one hand, these initiatives can h…
Contribution to the investigation of dynamic responses of human tissues under high velocity impacts using finite element modeling
2022
Thoracic injuries happen frequently in various frameworks of high velocity impact biomechanics. Rib fractures and lung injuries are the most common hard and soft tissue injuries in human thorax. This thesis aims to contribute to the investigation of dynamic responses of human tissues especially ribs and soft tissues under high velocity impacts using finite element modeling. Firstly, a novel strain-rate-dependent elasto-hydrodynamic constitutive law of the synthetic polymer Styrene-Ethylene-Butylene-Styrene (SEBS) gel was proposed and implemented as a user material subroutine in Radioss (Altair Hyperworks) to interpret dynamic behaviors of SEBS gel under various loading configurations. Numer…
Dendritic Ih selectively blocks temporal summation of unsynchronized distal inputs in CA1 pyramidal neurons.
2004
The active dendritic conductances shape the input-output properties of many principal neurons in different brain regions, and the various ways in which they regulate neuronal excitability need to be investigated to better understand their functional consequences. Using a realistic model of a hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neuron, we show a major role for the hyperpolarization-activated current, I-h, in regulating the spike probability of a neuron when independent synaptic inputs are activated with different degrees of synchronization and at different distances from the soma. The results allowed us to make the experimentally testable prediction that the I-h in these neurons is needed to reduce ne…
Local aromaticity in polyacenes manifested by individual proton and carbon shieldings: DFT mapping of aromaticity
2019
Exponential dependencies between locally calculated geometric and magnetic indexes of aromaticity, harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity (HOMA) and nucleus independent chemical shifts (NICS)(0), NICS(1) and NICS(1)zz, and the number of conjugated benzene rings in linear acenes, from benzene to decacene were observed at B3LYP/6-311+G** level of theory. Correlations between HOMA and NICS indexes showed exponential dependencies and were fitted with simple three-parameter function. Similar correlations between both indexes of aromaticity and proton and carbon nuclear isotropic shieldings of individual acene rings were observed. Contrary to proton data, the predicted 13 C nuclear isotropic sh…
3He NMR studies on helium–pyrrole, helium–indole, and helium–carbazole systems: a new tool for following chemistry of heterocyclic compounds
2015
The 3He nuclear magnetic shieldings were calculated for free helium atom and He–pyrrole, He–indole, and He–carbazole complexes. Several levels of theory, including Hartree–Fock (HF), Second-order Møller-Plesset Perturbation Theory (MP2), and Density Functional Theory (DFT) (VSXC, M062X, APFD, BHandHLYP, and mPW1PW91), combined with polarization-consistent pcS-2 and aug-pcS-2 basis sets were employed. Gauge-including atomic orbital (GIAO) calculated 3He nuclear magnetic shieldings reproduced accurately previously reported theoretical values for helium gas. 3He nuclear magnetic shieldings and energy changes as result of single helium atom approaching to the five-membered ring of pyrrole, indo…
The role of landscape, topography, and geodiversity in explaining vascular plant species richness in a fragmented landscape
2016
We explained vascular plant species richness patterns in a 286 km(2) fragmented landscape with a notable human influence. The objective of this study was two-fold: to test the relative importance of landscape, topography and geodiversity measures, and to compare three different landscape-type variables in species richness modeling. Moreover, we tested if results differ when only native species are considered. We used generalized linear modeling based variation partitioning and generalized additive models with different explanatory variable sets. Landscape and topography explained the majority of the variation but the relative importance of topography and geodiversity was higher in explainin…
Influence of cerium content and heat treatment on Ce:YAG@glass wool nanostructures
2019
The paper reports the influence of cerium content and heat treatment on composition, structural features and optical properties of nanostructures constituted by a layer of Ce:YAG nanoparticles on glass wool (Ce:YAG@GW). The Ce:YAG@GW nanostructures were obtained embedding the glass wool (GW) in a gel-like precursor and calcining at 800 and 900 °C. Gel-like precursor of urea glass route (UGR) method has been used to prepare both nanostructures and Ce:YAG nanoparticles prepared as references. Structural properties were investigated by using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (IR). Results showed that the composition of the final products strongly depends both on the cerium cont…
The generalized plane piezoelectric problem: Theoretical formulation and application to heterostructure nanowires
2016
We present a systematic methodology for the reformulation of a broad class of three-dimensional (3D) piezoelectric problems into a two-dimensional (2D) mathematical form. The sole underlying hypothesis is that the system geometry and material properties as well as the applied loads (forces and charges) and boundary conditions are translationally invariant along some direction. This class of problems is commonly denoted here as the generalized plane piezoelectric (GPP) problem. The first advantage of the generalized plane problems is that they are more manageable from both analytical and computational points of view. Moreover, they are flexible enough to accommodate any geometric cross secti…
Eresus kollari (Araneae: Eresidae) calls for heathland management
2011
Northwest Europe’s largest heather-dominated sandy habitats are located in the nature reserve Lu¨neburgerHeide, Germany. Yet, even these appear to be losing their ability to support some of their stenotopic species such as theladybird spider, Eresus kollari Rossi 1846, and are thus becoming increasingly important for the preservation of thesespecies. The habitat requirements of this endangered spider species were investigated in order to obtain data that will helpstabilize the last remnants of the species’ population in northwest Germany. Several heathland habitats were surveyed bypitfall trapping during the mate-search period of the males. Two statistical methods were applied: logistic reg…
