Analogical Modeling and Numerical Simulation for Sintering Phenomena

2013

In this paper the authors propose an approach for analogical modeling and numerical simulation of the phenomena of sintering, taking into account different cases depending on the type of energy used in the process of aggregation and the nature of the material powder, using a software which simulates the propagation and the control of the temperature. Many physical phenomena encountered in science and engineering can be described mathematically through partial differential equations (PDE) and ordinary differential equations (ODE) such as propagation phenomena, engineering applications, hydrotechnics, chemistry, pollution a.s.o. There may be situations when the exact establish of the analytic…

Distributed Consensus in Noncooperative Inventory Games

2009

This paper deals with repeated nonsymmetric congestion games in which the players cannot observe their payoffs at each stage. Examples of applications come from sharing facilities by multiple users. We show that these games present a unique Pareto optimal Nash equilibrium that dominates all other Nash equilibria and consequently it is also the social optimum among all equilibria, as it minimizes the sum of all the players’ costs. We assume that the players adopt a best response strategy. At each stage, they construct their belief concerning others probable behavior, and then, simultaneously make a decision by optimizing their payoff based on their beliefs. Within this context, we provide a …

Multiobjective GRASP with Path Relinking

2015

In this paper we review and propose different adaptations of the GRASP metaheuristic to solve multiobjective combinatorial optimization problems. In particular, we describe several alternatives to specialize the construction and improvement components of GRASP when two or more objectives are considered. GRASP has been successfully coupled with Path Relinking for single-objective optimization. Moreover, we propose different hybridizations of GRASP and Path Relinking for multiobjective optimization. We apply the proposed GRASP with Path Relinking variants to two combinatorial optimization problems, the biobjective orienteering problem and the biobjective path dissimilarity problem. We report …

Finite-size effects of Kirkwood–Buff integrals from molecular simulations

2017

The modelling of thermodynamic properties of liquids from local density fluctuations is relevant to many chemical and biological processes. The Kirkwood–Buff (KB) theory connects the microscopic structure of isotropic liquids with macroscopic properties such as partial derivatives of activity coefficients, partial molar volumes and compressibilities. Originally, KB integrals were formulated for open and infinite systems which are difficult to access with standard Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations. Recently, KB integrals for finite and open systems were formulated (J Phys Chem Lett. 2013;4:235). From the scaling of KB integrals for finite subvolumes, embedded in larger reservoirs, with the…

Modeling of the catalytic effects of potassium and calcium on spruce wood gasification in CO2

2016

Abstract Using previously reported thermogravimetric analysis measurements, the effects of calcium and potassium on the char gasification rate of spruce wood were modeled. Spruce wood was leached of inorganic ash elements and doped with measured amounts of potassium and calcium. The wood was gasified in an isothermal thermogravimetric analysis device in CO 2 where the devolatilization of the wood, char formation and char gasification all occurred inside the preheated reactor. A new method for separating the effects of devolatilization and char gasification is presented. Kinetic models were evaluated for their ability to describe the observed catalytic effects of potassium and calcium on the…

The actin-based motility of intracellularListeria monocytogenesis not controlled by small GTP-binding proteins of the Rho- and Ras-subfamilies

1999

In this study, we analyzed whether the actin-based motility of intracellular Listeria monocytogenes is controlled by the small GTP-binding proteins of the Rho- and Ras-subfamilies. These signalling proteins are key regulatory elements in the control of actin dynamics and their activity is essential for the maintenance of most cellular microfilament structures. We used the Clostridium difficile toxins TcdB-10463 and TcdB-1470 to specifically inactivate these GTP-binding proteins. Treatment of eukaryotic cells with either of these toxins led to a dramatic breakdown of the normal actin cytoskeleton, but did not abrogate the invasion of epithelial cells by L. monocytogenes and had no effect on …

Inter-Model Consistency and Complementarity: Learning from ex-vivo Imaging and Electrophysiological Data towards an Integrated Understanding of Cardi…

2011

International audience; Computational models of the heart at various scales and levels of complexity have been independently developed, parameterised and validated using a wide range of experimental data for over four decades. However, despite remarkable progress, the lack of coordinated efforts to compare and combine these computational models has limited their impact on the numerous open questions in cardiac physiology. To address this issue, a comprehensive dataset has previously been made available to the community that contains the cardiac anatomy and fibre orientations from magnetic resonance imaging as well as epicardial transmembrane potentials from optical mapping measured on a per…

Fermentation and elutriation of primary sludge: Effect of SRT on process performance

2007

Abstract A primary sludge fermentation–elutriation pilot plant was operated using in-line and side-stream schemes. The influence of solids retention time, recirculation sludge flow-rate and solids concentration on the fermentation–elutriation process performance has been assessed in this paper. The use of high elutriation flows (12% of influent flow) improved the volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration in the effluent stream. Suspended solids removal efficiency decreased in the primary settler when the solids retention time (SRT) was increased from 4 to 8 days. Disintegration step during hydrolysis process was pointed out as the main reason for that decrease. Maximum VFA productions were a…

Nucleosome-specific, Time-dependent Changes in Histone Modifications during Activation of the Early Growth Response 1 (Egr1) Gene

2014

Histone post-translational modifications and nucleosome remodeling are coordinate events involved in eukaryotic transcriptional regulation. There are relatively few data on the time course with which these events occur in individual nucleosomes. As a contribution to fill this gap, we first describe the nature and time course of structural changes in the nucleosomes -2, -1, and +1 of the murine Egr1 gene upon induction. To initiate the transient activation of the gene, we used the stimulation of MLP29 cells with phorbol esters and the in vivo activation after partial hepatectomy. In both models, nucleosomes -1 and +1 are partially evicted, whereas nucleosomes +1 and -2 slide downstream durin…
