Aligning personal and collective interests in emerging adults during the COVID-19 emergency in Italy

2021

This study investigated the relations of emerging adults' personal (civic competence and interdependent self-construal) and community-based (sense of community and civic engagement) resources as predictors of appraisal of COVID-19 Public Health Emergency Management (PHEM) and attitudes toward preventing contagion in Italy. Participants were 2873 Italian emerging adults (71% females) aged 19-30 years (M = 22.67, SD = 2.82). Structural equation modeling revealed both direct and indirect positive associations among study variables. Civic competence and interdependent self-construal were related to sense of community and civic engagement behavior which, in turn, predicted appraisal of PHEM. App…

Effect of long-term treatment with GH on bone metabolism, bone mineral density and bone elasticity in GH-deficient adults

1998

OBJECTIVE Adults with GH deficiency (GHD) commonly have subnormal bone mineral density (BMD), and have been reported to have an increased risk of fractures. It has been suggested that GH replacement therapy may have beneficial effects on bone in such patients. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of long-term GH replacement therapy on bone metabolism, BMD and bone elasticity in adults with GHD. DESIGN At the start of the study, 20 adults with GHD were randomized to receive either GH, 0.25 IU/kg/week (the ‘GH group’) or placebo (the ‘placebo group’). After 6 months, patients in the placebo group were switched to GH therapy, and all patients received GH for a further 42 months…

Medication adherence in schizophrenia: The role of insight, therapeutic alliance and perceived trauma associated with psychiatric care

2017

Medication non adherence in schizophrenia is a major cause of relapse and hospitalization and remains for clinicians an important challenge. This study investigates the associations between insight, therapeutic alliance, perceived trauma related to psychiatric treatment and medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia. In this multicenter study, 72 patients were assessed regarding symptomatology, self-reported adherence with medication, insight, medication side-effects, therapeutic alliance and perceived trauma related to psychiatric treatment. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was used to test predicted paths among these variables. The data fit a model in which medication adherence…

Soft and hard tissue alterations around implants placed in an alveolar ridge with a sloped configuration.

2012

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate soft and hard tissue alterations around implants placed in healed, sloped ridge sites. Materials and methods: In this prospective multi-center study, 65 patients between 20 and 74 years of age and with a need for a single tooth replacement were included. All patients presented with a recipient implant site demonstrating a lingual‐buccal bone height discrepancy of 2.0‐5.0 mm and with a neighboring tooth on its mesial aspect. Implant placement (OsseoSpeed Profile implants; Astra Tech AB, M! olndal, Sweden) was performed using a non-submerged installation procedure. The implants were placed in such a way that the sloped part of the device was located …

Bone metabolism and clinical study of 44 patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws.

2011

Osteonecrosis of the jaws is a clinical entity described and linked to treatment with bisphosphonates in 2003. Its real incidence is unknown and it could increase due to the large number of patients treated with these drugs, and its cumulative effect on the bone. State of the art knowledge regarding its etiopathogeny, clinical course and suitable treatments is limited. Objectives: To study the clinical characteristics of 44 patients with bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws and the state of their bone mineral metabolism: bone remodeling state, prevalence of fractures, bone mineral density study, and assessment of the different treatment strategies. Design of the Study: Observati…

Risk factors for clinical stress fractures in male military recruits: A prospective cohort study

2004

This prospective study was aimed at evaluating risk factors for symptomatic stress fractures among 179 Finnish male military recruits, aged 18 to 20 years. The subjects were studied in the very beginning of the military service of 6 to 12 months in summer. Bone mineral content (BMC) and density (BMD) were measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at the lumbar spine and at the hip and heel ultrasound investigation was performed. Blood was sampled for determination of serum total and free testosterone, total and free estradiol, sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), procollagen type I N propeptide, total and carboxylated osteocalcin, tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b, 25-hydroxyv…

Links between maternal feeding practices and children's eating difficulties. Validation of French tools

2012

Abstract: The main objectives of the study were to validate a measure of young children's eating difficulties and maternal feeding practices in a French sample, and to assess the links between these practices and children's eating difficulties. Mothers of French children aged 20-36 months completed 4 questionnaires that were validated using a Structural Equation Modelling approach. Links between children and maternal components were investigated using a PLS regression. The Children's Eating Difficulties Questionnaire yielded a 4-dimension solution: Neophobia, Pickiness, Low Appetite and Low Enjoyment in food. The Feeding Style Questionnaire assessed 3 dimensions: Authoritarian, Authoritativ…

Relationship between Burnout and Body Mass Index in Senior and Middle Managers from the Mexican Manufacturing Industry

2018

This research relates Burnout Syndrome (BS) with the Body Mass Index (BMI) among middle and senior managers of the Mexican manufacturing industry. Even though BS incidence is high in the Mexican industrial population, few systematic studies have explored BS and its relationship with other health problems, such as obesity. The goal of this research is to determine the relationship between BS and the BMI in employees with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. We present three structural equation models to relate BS and the BMI. The BMI ranges were determined according to the parameters (normal weight, overweight, and obesity) proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO). The sample inclu…

Repetition suppression versus enhancement — it's quantity that matters

2013

Upon repetition, certain stimuli induce reduced neural responses (i.e., repetition suppression), whereas others evoke stronger signals (i.e., repetition enhancement). It has been hypothesized that stimulus properties (e.g., visibility) determine the direction of the repetition effect. Here, we show that the very same stimuli can induce both repetition suppression and enhancement, whereby the only determining factor is the number of repetitions. Repeating the same, initially novel low-visible pictures of scenes for up to 5 times enhanced the blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) response in scene-selective areas, that is, the parahippocampal place area (PPA) and the transverse occipital sulcus…

An extended theory of planned behavior for parent-for-child health behaviors: A meta-analysis

2020

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a meta-analysis of studies examining the determinants of behaviors performed by parents to promote the health of their child, termed "parent-for-child health behaviors," based on an extended theory of planned behavior. Specifically, the study aimed to meta-analyze correlations among theory of planned behavior constructs, planning, and past behavior, and use them to test theory predictions and effects of salient moderators. METHOD: A systematic search identified 46 studies that provided correlations between at least one theory construct and intention or behavior for parent-for-child behaviors. Theory predictions were tested using meta-analytic structural equation modeli…
