"Co jest pragnienie moje?" : o "Don Juanie" Tadeusza Rittnera
2019
The article attempts to read a new reading of Tadeusz Rittner’s drama Don Juan (1909), updated with the cultural contexts of the 19th century. Therefore, they were cited, inter alia, works of Søren Kierkegaard’s Seducer’s Diary and The Immediate Erotic stages or the Musical Erotic from the volume Either/Or and the psychological novel by Paul Bourget; as well as motives, themes and views characteristic of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, both the revelations of Sigmund Freud and Otto Weininger, as well as provocations by Alfred Jarry or irony, grotesque, metatheatricalism inherent in austromodernism. The article is an attempt at a polemic with the categorical judgment of Rittner’s dr…
"Jak gdyby to była prawda..." : podejrzany realizm i podejrzany modernizm Tadeusza Rittnera
2020
This paper is an attempt at redefining selected plays written by Tadeusz Rittner in the modernist and symbolist convention. In the 1950s, they were evaluated by Zbigniew Raszewski as among the playwright’s lesser achievements. I have analysed three texts: the one-act plays Sąsiadka (“The Neighbour”) and Odwiedziny o zmroku (“A Visit at Dusk”) as well as the play Don Juan. There is no doubt that the author did not avoid stylistic exaggeration in his modernist works, but one can also find some distance from the conventions of the Young Poland period as well as the use of the grotesque, theatrical sham, and the poetics of intimate drama in these plays. Rittner’s Viennese character is an alibi …

Selected Poems of Dorothy Livesay: a Collective or a Private Record?
2012
“Distant woods”: the matter of books and the modernist pastoral
2021
International audience; This paper is part of a broader project that aims to examine the importance of the materials used in the making of illustrated books from a medial and ecocritical perspective. I focus on a specific case study in which I explore the attitude to nature encapsulated in the use of and reference to wood in British interwar wood-engraved illustrated books. My departure point is the English artist Paul Nash’s Places (Heinemann, 1922), a short collection of prose poems and wood-engravings. An elegy produced at a time when Nash was trying to come to terms with the aftermath of the First World War, Places was published after he made the great war paintings depicting the human …

"Czytano je z zajęciem, a często ze wzruszeniem" : o zapomnianych powieściach Hanny Krzemienieckiej
2019
Janina née Bobińska Furs-Żyrkiewiczowa (1866–1930) is a forgotten author of works documenting the life of the Polish landed gentry and the intelligentsia in Russian Ukraine at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. Her three novels – Fatum. Studium psychologiczne (1904). A gdy odejdzie w przepaść wieczną… Romans zagrobowy (1906), Lecą wichry!( 1921) – in an interesting way they combine conventions of moral realism, decadent and lyrical atmosphere of modernism and the traditions of the “Ukrainian school” of Polish Romantic poetry (the writer was related to B. Zaleski). The prose of Krzemieniecka, the wife of a Pole and a high-ranking Russian officer, contains many autobiographical themes a…
