Catalysis with Doped Sol-Gel Silicates

Silicates doped with catalytic species have only been slowly adopted by the fine chemicals and pharmaceutical industries, in spite of their remarkable and unique properties such as pronounced physical and chemical stability; high (enantio)selective activity and ease of materials production and application. This is now changing thanks to stricter safety regulations and to concomitant success of the first commercial catalysts. In this account we tell the story of these materials and identify some deficiencies in the innovation process that may serve as lesson in guiding the future management of innovation in these relevant industries.

Abstract Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) is an aromatic shrub cultivated worldwide for the production of essential oils. The major constituents of these oils are monoterpenes, which are obtained from isopentenyl diphosphate and dimethylallyl diphosphate precursors through the plastidial methylerythritol phosphate (MEP) pathway and/or the cytosolic mevalonate pathway. 1-Deoxy-d-xylulose-5-P synthase (DXS) catalyzes the first step of the MEP pathway. Spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia) essential oil is widely used in the perfume, cosmetic, flavouring and pharmaceutical industries. Thus, modifications of yield and composition of this essential oil by genetic engineering should have important scientific and commercial applications. We generated transgenic spike lavender plants expressing the Arabidopsis thaliana HMG1 cDNA, encoding the catalytic domain of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase (HMGR1S), a key enzyme of the mevalonic acid (MVA) pathway. Abstract This work aimed to study the effect of starch (acetylated di-starch phosphate and starch acetate) and maltodextrin (DE 10.2 and DE 15.6) on the properties of soy protein isolate (SPI) films. Influence of emulsion and powder size on the stability of encapsulated d-limonene by spray drying

Abstract The microencapsulation of d -limonene by spray drying was investigated with respect to the effects of emulsion droplet size, powder particle size, as well as to the effects of various kinds of matrices (gum arabic, maltodextrin, and modified starch) on its stability. It was realized by studying release characteristics and oxidative stability during storage. The release and the oxidation decreased deeply with an increase in powder and emulsion particle size for gum arabic and maltodextrin materials. Electrochemistry of TiO2–iron hexacyanocobaltate composite electrodes

Abstract In this paper we investigate the electrochemical behavior of iron hexacyanocobaltate (FeHCC) in comparison to the cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF). The best results were achieved on electrochemical synthesized film of FeHCC on the TiO2 modified electrodes. The chemical and physical characterizations confirm the formation of the FeHCC with the classical cubic crystal structure of the Prussian blue analogs, with cell parameter a very close to 10 A, as well as the formation of micro aggregates of TiO2 covered by FeHCC.
