Brane-world and loop cosmology from a gravity–matter coupling perspective

2015

We show that the effective brane-world and the loop quantum cosmology background expansion histories can be reproduced from a modified gravity perspective in terms of an $f(R)$ gravity action plus a $g(R)$ term non-minimally coupled with the matter Lagrangian. The reconstruction algorithm that we provide depends on a free function of the matter density that must be specified in each case and allows to obtain analytical solutions always. In the simplest cases, the function $f(R)$ is quadratic in the Ricci scalar, $R$, whereas $g(R)$ is linear. Our approach is compared with recent results in the literature. We show that working in the Palatini formalism there is no need to impose any constrai…

What is a singular black hole beyond general relativity?

2017

Exploring the characterization of singular black hole spacetimes, we study the relation between energy density, curvature invariants, and geodesic completeness using a quadratic $f(R)$ gravity theory coupled to an anisotropic fluid. Working in a metric-affine approach, our models and solutions represent minimal extensions of General Relativity (GR) in the sense that they rapidly recover the usual Reissner-Nordstr\"{o}m solution from near the inner horizon outwards. The anisotropic fluid helps modify only the innermost geometry. Depending on the values and signs of two parameters on the gravitational and matter sectors, a breakdown of the correlations between the finiteness/divergence of the…

Planck scale physics and topology change through an exactly solvable model

2014

We consider the collapse of a charged radiation fluid in a Planck-suppressed quadratic extension of General Relativity (GR) formulated à la Palatini. We obtain exact analytical solutions that extend the charged Vaidya-type solution of GR, which allows to explore in detail new physics at the Planck scale. Starting from Minkowski space, we find that the collapsing fluid generates wormholes supported by the electric field. We discuss the relevance of our findings in relation to the quantum foam structure of space–time and the meaning of curvature divergences in this theory.

On gravitational waves in Born-Infeld inspired non-singular cosmologies

2017

We study the evolution of gravitational waves for non-singular cosmological solutions within the framework of Born-Infeld inspired gravity theories, with special emphasis on the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory. We review the existence of two types of non-singular cosmologies, namely bouncing and asymptotically Minkowski solutions, from a perspective that makes their features more apparent. We study in detail the propagation of gravitational waves near these non-singular solutions and carefully discuss the origin and severity of the instabilities and strong coupling problems that appear. We also investigate the role of the adiabatic sound speed of the matter sector in the regularisatio…

Sub-critical filtration conditions of commercial hollow-fibre membranes in a submerged anaerobic MBR (HF-SAnMBR) system: The effect of gas sparging i…

2012

A submerged anaerobic MBR demonstration plant with two commercial hollow-fibre ultrafiltration systems (PURON®, Koch Membrane Systems, PUR-PSH31) was operated using municipal wastewater at high levels of mixed liquor total solids (MLTS) (above 22gL -1). A modified flux-step method was applied to assess the critical flux (J C) at different gas sparging intensities. The results showed a linear dependency between J C and the specific gas demand per unit of membrane area (SGD m). J C ranged from 12 to 19LMH at SGD m values of between 0.17 and 0.5Nm 3h -1m -2, which are quite low in comparison to aerobic MBR. Long-term trials showed that the membranes operated steadily at fluxes close to the est…

Modified post-bifurcation dynamics and routes to chaos from double-Hopf bifurcations in a hyperchaotic system

2012

In order to understand the onset of hyperchaotic behavior recently observed in many systems, we study bifurcations in the modified Chen system leading from simple dynamics into chaotic regimes. In particular, we demonstrate that the existence of only one fixed point of the system in all regions of parameter space implies that this simple point attractor may only be destabilized via a Hopf or double Hopf bifurcation as system parameters are varied. Saddle-node, transcritical and pitchfork bifurcations are precluded. The normal form immediately following double Hopf bifurcations is constructed analytically by the method of multiple scales. Analysis of this generalized double Hopf normal form …

Cryptogein affects expression of alpha3, alpha6 and beta1 20S proteasome subunits encoding genes in tobacco.

2001

Twelve a and b 20S proteasome subunits cDNAs showing 70–82% identity with the corresponding genes in Arabidopsis or rice, and features of eukaryotic proteasome subunits were cloned in tobacco. Only b1-tcI 7, a3 and a6, 20S proteasome subunits encoding genes were up-regulated by cryptogein, a proteinaceous elicitor of plant defence reactions. These results led to the hypothesis that the activation of b1-tcI 7, a3 and a6 could induce a specific proteolysis involved in the hypersensitive response and systemic acquired resistance monitored by cryptogein. In eukaryotes, the 26S proteasome is the central multicatalytic proteinase complex comprising two subcomplexes: the 20S core particle that per…

Presence and coding properties of 2'-O-methyl-5-carbamoylmethyluridine (ncm5Um) in the wobble position of the anticodon of tRNA(Leu) (U*AA) from brew…

1992

AbstractThe unknown modified nucleoside U* has been isolated by enzymatic and HPLC protocols from tRNALeu(U*AA) recently discovered in brewer's yeast. The pure U* nucleoside has been characterized by electron impact mass spectroscopy, and comparison of its chromatographic and UV-absorption properties with those of appropriate synthetic compounds. The structure of U* was established as 2′-O-methyl-5-carbamoylmethyluridine (ncm5Um). The yeast tRNALeu (U*AA) is the only tRNA so far sequenced which has been shown to contain ncm5Um. The location of such a modified uridine at the first position of the anticodon restricts the decoding property to A of the leucine UUA codon.

Withanone Ameliorates Stress Symptoms in Caenorhabditis Elegans by Acting through Serotonin Receptors

2021

ABSTRACT Introduction Depression is responsible for 800 000 deaths worldwide, a number that will rise significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Affordable novel drugs with less severe side effects are urgently required. We investigated the effect of withanone (WN) from Withania somnifera on the serotonin system of wild-type and knockout Caenorhabditis elegans strains using in silico, in vitro, and in vivo methods. Methods WN or fluoxetine (as positive control drug) was administered to wild-type (N2) and knockout C. elegans strains (AQ866, DA1814, DA2100, DA2109, and MT9772) to determine their effect on oxidative stress (Trolox, H2DCFDA, and juglone assays) on osmotic stress and heat stres…

Electrochemistry of Carbon Dioxide on Carbon Electrodes.

2016

Carbon electrodes have the advantages of being chemically inert at negative potential ranges in all media and high offset potentials for hydrogen evolution in comparison to metal electrodes, and therefore are the most suitable electrodes for electrochemistry and electrochemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemicals. Herein we summarize on carbon electrodes the voltammetry, electrochemical and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, as well as electron synthesis using CO2 and carbon electrodes. The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction using carbocatalyts and the future activities about electrochemical CO2 conversion are highlighted.
