Full modal analysis of confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides

An efficient method for analysing confocal coaxial elliptical waveguides is presented. Using elliptical coordinates, the differential Helmholtz equation is transformed into a linear matrix eigenvalue problem by means of the method of moments. The expressions of the vector mode functions for the full spectrum of these guides are constructed, including the TEM, TM and TE modes. The convergence of the method is very good, giving an efficient and accurate code. Comparisons with numerical results found in the technical literature validate the presented theory.

Computational determination of the dominant triplet population mechanism in photoexcited benzophenone

In benzophenone, intersystem crossing occurs efficiently between the S-1(n pi(star)) state and the T-1 state of dominant n pi(star) character, leading to excited triplet states after photoexcitation. The transition mechanism between S-1(n pi(star)) and T-1 is still a matter of debate, despite several experimental studies. Quantum mechanical calculations have been performed in order to assess the relative efficiencies of previously proposed mechanisms, in particular, the direct S-1 -> T-1 and indirect S-1 -> T-2(pi pi(star)) -> T-1 ones. Spectral moments of the edge adjacency matrix in molecular graphs. 3. Molecules containing cycles

A substructural approach to quantitative structure−property relationships based on the spectral moments of the edge adjacency matrix is extended to molecules containing cycles. Spectral moments are expressed as linear combinations of structural fragments of any kind of nonweighted graphs. The boiling points of a series of 80 cycloalkanes was well-described by the present approach. The predictive power of the model was proved by using a test set of another 26 compounds. An equation that expresses the contribution of the different fragments of the molecules to the boiling point was obtained.

Evidence for Increased neutron and proton excitations between 51−63 Mn

The hyperfine structures of the odd-even 51−63Mnatoms (N=26 −38) were measured using bunched beam collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. The extracted spins and magnetic dipole moments have been compared to large-scale shell-model calculations using different model spaces and effective interactions. In the case of 61,63Mn, the results show the increasing importance of neutron excitations across the N=40subshell closure, and of proton excitations across the Z=28shell gap. These measurements provide the first direct proof that proton and neutron excitations across shell gaps are playing an important role in the ground state wave functions of the neutron-rich Mn isotopes. publisher: Els…

Wavelet-like bases for thin-wire integral equations in electromagnetics

AbstractIn this paper, wavelets are used in solving, by the method of moments, a modified version of the thin-wire electric field integral equation, in frequency domain. The time domain electromagnetic quantities, are obtained by using the inverse discrete fast Fourier transform. The retarded scalar electric and vector magnetic potentials are employed in order to obtain the integral formulation. Fayans functional for deformed nuclei. Uranium region

Fayans energy density functional (EDF) FaNDF^0 has been applied to the nuclei around uranium region. Ground state characteristics of the Th, U and Pu isotopic chains, up to the two-neutron drip line, are found and compared with predictions from several Skyrme EDFs. The two-neutron drip line is found for FaNDF^0, SLy4 and SkM^* EDFs for a set of elements with even proton number, from Pb up to Fm.

Shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient even-even Hg182-188 isotopes studied via Coulomb excitation

Coulomb-excitation experiments to study electromagnetic properties of radioactive even-even Hg isotopes were performed with 2.85  MeV/nucleon mercury beams from REX-ISOLDE. Magnitudes and relative signs of the reduced E2 matrix elements that couple the ground state and low-lying excited states in Hg182-188 were extracted. Information on the deformation of the ground and the first excited 0+ states was deduced using the quadrupole sum rules approach. Results show that the ground state is slightly deformed and of oblate nature, while a larger deformation for the excited 0+ state was noted in Hg182,184. We present a new e-class command, acfest, that implements the method of Ackerberg, Caves, and Frazer (2015, Econometrica 83: 2411–2451) to estimate production functions. This method deals with the functional dependence problems that may arise in the methods proposed by Olley and Pakes (1996, Econometrica 64: 1263–1297) and, particularly, Levinsohn and Petrin (2003, Review of Economic Studies 70: 317–341) (implemented in Stata by Yasar, Raciborski, and Poi [2008, Stata Journal 8: 221–231] and Petrin, Poi, and Levinsohn [2004, Stata Journal 4: 113–123], respectively). Numerical simulation of radiated EMI in 42V electrical automotive architectures

The work is focused on the evaluation of radiated electromagnetic interference generated by dc/dc converters in 42 V systems automotive environment. The results obtained by using the method of moments and the finite difference time domain method, separately, are presented and validated in comparison with those measured in a semi-anechoic electromagnetic chamber. A measurement system set up by the authors is employed. Both the used numerical approaches are proved to be an useful tool for radiated disturbance prediction, and also for electromagnetic compatibility oriented design of the vehicle electrical architecture.
