Moral panic, moral regulation and essentialization of identities: Discursive struggle over unethical business practices in the Finnish national media

2013

The study sheds light on the language of moral panic and moral regulation in the Finnish news media over a 9-year period on the subject of cartels and cartel agreements. What makes the case particularly interesting is that the object of the most explicit moral panic was the introduction of new laws (leniency programmes) designed to regulate illegal cartel behaviour. The main argument is that the construction of both moral regulation and moral panic in news media takes place through essentializing discursive claims that contribute to national identity construction. The study contributes to current literature on moral panics as ideologico-discursive phenomena and throws some light on the powe…

2014

Orto. Revista de Documentacion Social, published in Valencia from 1932 to 1934, is a good example of cultural magazines in the Spanish labour movement, particularly in the world of anarcho-syndicalism. Marin Civera, its editor, sought to make Orto (which had a large and diverse range of contributors) a forum for convergence between the different working-class ideologies, united by the ideas of “Syndicalism”. In keeping with its aim to be “social documentation for the proletariat “, the journal took a strong interest in the spread of theory and practice, and debates on, sexual reform, linking these efforts to the international movement for that cause. In addition to the struggle for a new se…

2006

The Strawson´s Basic Argument is the stronger against moral responsibility in Philosophy of action. One should be responsible of his identity to be moral responsible of his actions, but then nobody could be never responsible. In this article I criticize orthodox solutions to Strawson´s sceptical challenge and show how they share with the Argument the same theological notion of monadical agent. A new solution needs a new conception of agent..

“Narrative Museums” and Curators’ Rights: The Protection of a Museum Exhibition and Its Scenario under Polish Law

2020

Since at least the 1990s, museums have expanded to cover a variety of societal functions, often enabling inclusive and participatory spaces for critical dialogue about the past and the future, and bridging together various narratives and cultural experiences, contributing to social cohesion and reconciliation. The new functions of museums, involving novel technological forms of display and communication, pose several legal questions concerning the management of such institutions, their resources, and exhibitions, including issues of copyright and other intellectual property rights. While referring to a recent case concerning an alleged infringement of the moral rights of the authors of the …

Indirect Discrimination and School Segregation of Roma Children in the Czech Republic

2018

In DH v. Czech Republic (2007), the Czech government argued that Roma parents consented to the assignment of their children to ‘special’ schools. According to the government, parental consent undermined the claim that the disproportionate assignment of Roma children to inferior schools amounted to discrimination. The court rejected the argument, finding as a matter of law that parents could not choose to subject their children to discriminatory education, and as a matter of fact that the parents’ consent was not informed. Since the judgment, the Czech government continues to disproportionately assign Roma children to inferior schools, but it has revised the procedure they use to obtain pare…

DICATIONIC IMIDAZOLIUM SALTS: TUNABLE ANTIMICROBIAL AND ANTITUMORAL CHEMIOTHERAPEUTIC LEADS

2015

The chemical synthesis of novel chemotherapeutical leads is evolving thanks to possibility to design molecules with desired physical-chemical and, thus, biological properties. The imidazolium salts, recently proven effective to inhibit bacterial and/or cancer cell growth, posses an amphiphilic nature that is conferred by the imidazolium cation having a polar head generally coupled with aliphatic side chains. Thus, biological properties of imidazolium salts can be tuned through modifications involving the cation structure and/or the anion nature. By covalently linking two imidazolium rings, di-imidazolium salts were obtainedobtain differing in: i) kind of anions; ii) geometric isomerization …
