Factors leading to dissemination of cutaneous anthrax: an international ID-IRI study
2022
Background: Although anthrax is a rare zoonotic infection, it still causes significant mortality and morbidity. In this multicenter study, which is the largest anthrax case series ever reported, we aimed to describe the factors leading to dissemination of cutaneous anthrax. Methods: Adult patients with cutaneous anthrax from 16 referral centers were pooled. The study had a retrospective design, and included patients treated between January 1, 1990 and December 1, 2019. Probable, and confirmed cases based upon CDC anthrax 2018 case definition were included in the study. A descriptive statistical analysis was performed for all variables. Results: A total of 141 cutaneous anthrax patients were i…
Il caso Webern. Ricostruzione di un delitto
2021
On the evening of September 15, 1945, when the war was over, the composer Anton Webern was assassinated by a cook of the American occupation army. The circumstances of the crime remain in some respects unsolved and cast a shadow over Webern's biography as a whole. The book is a portrai…
La morte e i morti nelle società euromediterranee
2015
DISSECTION PROPERTIES OF ANEURYSMAL AND NONANEURYSMAL HUMAN ASCENDING THORACIC AORTA: PRELIMINARY RESULTS
2010
Ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) is among the most devastating forms of cardiovascular disease, causing a significant mortality despite current medical and surgical treatments [1]. Moreover these therapies themselves are associated with great risk of mortality or morbidity, complicated by the advanced age of the typical patient, and high surgical costs. The mechanics of spontaneous aortic dissection is not fully understood. It is generally believed that aortic dissection initiates as an intimal tear in which a separation of wall layers produces the formation of a ‘false’ lumen. The dissection may propagate axially and/or circumferentially due to blood flow and pressure. Dissection …
Management of Patients With Aortic Dissection
2008
Cardiovascular diseases have become the leading cause of death in countries with high medical standards. Acute aortic syndromes—particularly acute aortic dissection—are playing an increasingly important part in this development (1). Acute aortic dissection has an extremely high mortality rate after the occurrence of an initial manifestation, so a standardized treatment algorithm is crucial for patient survival. On the basis of selected recent publications, the aim of this study was to review the current status of the management of aortic dissection and formulate recommendations for treatment.
Outcomes of aortic valve repair according to valve morphology and surgical techniques
2012
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of aortic valve morphology and different surgical aortic valve repair techni- ques on long-term clinical outcomes. METHODS: Between February 2003 and May 2010, 216 patients with aortic insufficiency underwent aortic valve repair in our institu- tion. Ages ranged between 26 and 82 years (mean 53 ± 15 years). Aortic valve dysfunctions, according to functional classification, were: type I in 55 patients (25.5%), type II in 126 (58.3%) and type III in 35 (16.2%). Sixty-six patients (27.7%) had a bicuspid valve. Aortic valve repair techniques included sub-commissural plasty in 138 patients, plication in 84, free-edge reinforcement in 80,…
Temporal Trends in Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement in France
2017
Background - Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is standard therapy for patients with severe aortic stenosis who are at high surgical risk. However, national data regarding procedural characteristics and clinical outcomes over time are limited. Objectives - The aim of this study was to assess nationwide performance trends and clinical outcomes of TAVR during a 6-year period. Methods - TAVRs performed in 48 centers across France between January 2013 and December 2015 were prospectively included in the FRANCE TAVI (French Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation) registry. Findings were further compared with those reported from the FRANCE 2 (French Aortic National CoreValve and Edwa…
Flos Tectorii degradation of mortars: An example of synergistic action between soluble salts and biodeteriogens
2015
Abstract The definition of Flos Tectorii, originally suggested by F.S. Brancato in the 1980s’ (Brancato, 1986), refers to a unique form of deterioration identified on both aerial and hydraulic mortars used in the external walls of historic and contemporary buildings. It is clearly recognizable due to the development of peculiar concentric (occasionally sub-circular) macroscopic forms. At present, there is still a lack of information about the full interpretation of this phenomenon regarding the interaction between the different physicochemical and biological factors that lead to this particular type of degradation. The present study was aimed to examine whether the specific mineralogical an…
