Not just the sum of its parts : Geographic variation and nonadditive effects of pyrazines in the chemical defence of an aposematic moth

2022

Chemical defences often vary within and between populations both in quantity and quality, which is puzzling if prey survival is dependent on the strength of the defence. We investigated the within- and between-population variability in chemical defence of the wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis). The major components of its defences, SBMP (2-sec-butyl-3-methoxypyrazine) and IBMP (2-isobutyl-3-methoxypyrazine), are volatiles that deter bird attacks. We hypothesized that (1) variation in the chemical defences of male wood tiger moths reflects the local predation pressure; (2) observed differences in quantity and quality of defence among populations have a genetic basis; and (3) increasing con…

Techniki kształcenia słuchania w L1. Perspektywa lingwo- i glottodydaktyczna

2022

Task-focused behaviour and mothers' causal attributions in relation to dyslexia : a follow-up from age 8 to age 20

2018

Children with dyslexia tend to find reading stressful. Coping responses, such as task-focused and avoidant behaviours, can help mitigate the stress. Task-focused behaviour is associated with reading development, with others’ at-tributions of success and failure linked to task-focused behaviour. The present study aims to examine whether differences in task-focused behaviour between those with dyslexia and those without dyslexia exist in childhood (age 8) and persist in adolescence (age 15) and early adulthood (age 20). The study also aimed to understand the relationship between mothers’ causal attributions of their 15-year-old adolescents’ school successes and fail-ures and task-focused beha…

Partnership of schools and civil society organisations to support education of students of varied linguistic backgrounds—The situation in the Czech R…

2022

This article reports on research examining the intensity and forms of partnership between civil society organisations (particularly non-profit non-governmental organisations with a focus on students with a different mother tongue) and schools in three European geographical areas, answering three research questions: (1) What services do non-profits offer for teachers? (2) How do non-profits see the current cooperation? (3) Do teachers know about the existence of non-profits in this area and are they interested in such cooperation? A mixed methods research approach was used. A questionnaire was used for eliciting responses from 34 non-profit organisations (nine in Czech Republic, nineteen in …

Family- and classroom-related factors and mother–kindergarten teacher trust in Estonia and Finland

2014

This study examined the role of family-related (mother’s education, depressive symptoms and child’s gender) and kindergarten-related (teacher’s experience, teaching practices and class size) factors in mothers’ and teachers’ mutual trust in Estonia and Finland. Six hundred eighteen (206 Estonian and 412 Finnish) mothers of kindergarten children and their teachers (26 Estonian, 49 Finnish) were participated in the study. Both mothers and teachers filled in the questionnaire on trust; teachers’ teaching practices were observed with early childhood classroom observation measure. The results of multilevel modelling showed that mothers in both countries trusted more in teachers who used child-ce…

Not just daycare: nordic mothers in research, development and innovation navigating work and childcare

2022

Nordic welfare policies mitigate work–childcare reconciliation; however, they are not enough for mothers working in intensive work cultures. In addition, there are differences among the three Nordic states in both work–family policies and cultural norms as to how they should be used. In this article, we study the resources mothers who work in research, development and innovation (R&D&I) in Finland, Norway and Sweden rely on in their work–childcare reconciliation. Thematic analysis of interviews with 74 professionals resulted in identifying four main resources: father involvement, parental leave system and daycare, flexible working, and grandparent help and networks. Our analysis brings to v…

Multi-domain Features of the Non-phase-locked Component of Interest Extracted from ERP Data by Tensor Decomposition

2020

The waveform in the time domain, spectrum in the frequency domain, and topography in the space domain of component(s) of interest are the fundamental indices in neuroscience research. Despite the application of time–frequency analysis (TFA) to extract the temporal and spectral characteristics of non-phase-locked component (NPLC) of interest simultaneously, the statistical results are not always expectedly satisfying, in that the spatial information is not considered. Complex Morlet wavelet transform is widely applied to TFA of event-related-potential (ERP) data, and mother wavelet (which should be firstly defined by center frequency and bandwidth (CFBW) before using the method to TFA of ERP…

Komunikacyjny i symboliczny wymiar edukacji językowej na Śląsku Opolskim - przypadek języka niemieckiego

2016

Mother tongue is one of the most important aspects of preserving identity o f national or ethnic minority. Being in force since 2005 the Law on National and Ethnic Minorities and Regional Language minorities in Poland secures the right to preserve and maintain their language and to introduce it as an assistant language in municipalities. In the Opole province this refers to the German language, which also in the whole country dominates in teaching minority languages. Analysis of statistical data on the size of the German minority in Poland tends to reflect on the double meaning o f the German language in the Opole Silesia. Is learning German as a minority language, fulfil such a role? To wh…
