Gastric and gingival localization of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. An immunohistochemical, virological and clinical case report.

1999

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHL) of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) are characterized by their mucosal and glandular tissue localization. The case described here falls into the European-American classification of a low-grade B-cell lymphoma of the MALT type, with a gingival lesion 2 years after a gastric lesion. The pathogenetic mechanisms of NHL in oral MALT and the diagnosis and treatment are discussed.

Metastasis of renal clear-cell carcinoma to the oral mucosa, an atypical location.

2008

The majority of cases of metastatic tumors involve the mandible and some the maxilla but they are considerably less common in intraoral soft tissues. In addition, the primary tumor is known in the majority of cases; although in onethird of such cases, metastasis is the first clinical manifestation. The most common primary tumors metastasizing to the mouth are lung carcinoma in men and breast carcinoma in women. An oral metastasis implies a serious prognosis, as in the majority of patients there is multiple organ involvement at the time of diagnosis. We present the case of a 52-year old patient with renal pathology who came to the emergency room due to a rapidly increasing gingival tumor. Wi…

Molecular genetic study of novel biomarkers for early diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma

2014

Objectives: Early detection and treatment of an oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is critical because of its rapid growth, frequent lymph-node metastasis, and poor prognosis. However, no clinically-valuable methods of early diagnosis exist, and genetic analysis of OSCCs has yielded no biomarkers. Study Design: We investigated the expression of genes associated with inflammation in OSCCs via a quantitative reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis of microarray data. Tumor and normal tissues from five patients with an OSCC were used for microarray analysis. Differentially-expressed genes, identified using permutation, local pooled error (LPE), t-tests, and signific…

Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression Is Related With Localization, Proliferation, and Overall Survival in Canine Melanocytic Neoplasms

2011

A direct relationship has been firmly established between cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expression and malignant behavior in human melanoma. This report examines the relationship between COX-2 expression and tumor location, mitotic and proliferative indices, degree of T CD3+ lymphocyte infiltration, overall survival, and frequency of recurrence and metastasis of 57 melanocytic tumors (25 oral and 32 cutaneous). COX-2 was highly or moderately expressed in 88% of oral neoplasms (22 of 25), whereas for their cutaneous counterparts, COX-2 expression was low or insignificant in 75% of cases (24 of 32). High and moderate COX-2 expression levels were observed in 73% of melanocytic tumors with a mitoti…

Clinicopathological and Immunohistochemical Study of Oral Amalgam Pigmentation

2012

Amalgam tattoo, the most common exogenous oral pigmentation, can sometimes be confused with melanotic lesions, being then biopsied. We present the clinicopathological characteristics of 6 biopsied cases (5 females and 1 male) of oral amalgam pigmentation. The most common location was the gingival mucosa, followed by the buccal and palatal mucosa. Morphology and distribution (stromal, perivascular, perineural, endomysial) of pigmentation was variable; there was only 1 case with fibrous capsular reaction and likewise only a single case of granulomatous foreign body reaction. Morphological variability is conditioned by the timing and amount of the pigment deposit, which is often associated wit…

HPV infection and oral carcinogenesis

2010

To the Editor,High risk human papilloma viruses (HPV) have been found in head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC), particularly in oropharyngeal carcinomas (1). Nevertheless, there are some controversial aspects regarding this issue (2) such as whether the HPV infec-tion is a temporary or a persistent oral infection in these patients.Recently, Chuang et al. (3) have associated the presence of HPV-16 DNA in surveillance salivary rinses with a significant risk for recurrence in HNSCC.We hypothesized that the improved prognosis of many patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal carcinoma is due to the temporary nature of the infection, and there-fore in the absence of lesions no HPV genomic…

Resurgence of syphilis:a diagnosis based on unusual oral mucosa lesions

2009

Background Known as “the great imitator,” secondary syphilis may clinically manifest itself in myriad of ways, involving different organs (including the oral cavity), and mimicking, both clinically and histologically, several diseases, thereby making diagnosis a challenge for clinicians. Case report We highlight an interesting case of a 45-year-old man on whose diagnosis of secondary syphilis was based on the presence of unusual oral lesions, consisting of a well delimited, raised, nonhomogeneous, and corrugated white plaque on the right buccal mucosa which mimicked, clinically and histologically, a “leukoplakia-like” plaque and several whitish oral mucous patches localized on the lower lab…

Assessment of time intervals in the pathway to oral cancer diagnosis in north-westerm Spain. Relative contribution of patient interval

2016

Background Despite continuous advances in diagnosis and therapy, oral cancers are mostly diagnosed at advanced stages with minor survival improvements in the last two decades. Both phenomena have been attributed to delays in the diagnosis. This study aims at quantifying the time elapsed until definitive diagnosis in these patients and the patient interval’s contribution. Material and Methods A hospital-based, ambispective, observational study was undertaken on incident cases with a pathological diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma recruited during 2015 at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services of CHUAC (A Coruña) and POVISA (Vigo) hospitals. Results 74 consecutive oral cancer pati…

Impact of early childhood caries and its treatment under general anesthesia on orofacial function and quality of life : a prospective comparative stu…

2017

Background Early Childhood Caries (ECC) has become a major public health concern worldwide, mostly affecting children from disadvantaged families in increasingly severe forms. This condition has been frequently reported to alter children’s nutrition, growth and general development. It negatively impacts their quality of life, through painful episodes and severe eating difficulties. While this period is crucial for oral praxes development, the impact of dental state on oro-facial functions is poorly documented. This study evaluated the impact of ECC and its treatment under general anesthesia on oro-facial functions and quality of life in pre-school children. Material and Methods The dysfunct…
