Immigrant Student Achievement and Education Policy in Finland
2018
Finnish society has faced many changes during the past decade. One major change has been the increasing number of students speaking languages other than the national ones. This chapter provides an overview of the immigrant student population in Finland, including its change during the last decades. This chapter also takes a closer look at results of national and international assessments of students with an immigrant background, particularly the PISA 2012 results in which this student group was oversampled in Finland. This oversampling made the data considerably more representative of students having an immigrant background than in any other rounds, and also allowed more reliable statistica…

Intercultural Education: Promoting Sustainability in Education and Training
2008
Education for sustainable development (ESD) is a dynamic concept that encompasses a new vision of education seeking to empower people of all ages to assume responsibility for creating and enjoying a sustainable future. Today the notion of sustainable development includes ecological, economic, social and cultural sustainability. Cultural diversity and intercultural education contribute to the social and cultural aspects of sustainability. Responding to the challenge of ESD entails that the education policy is based on the participation of the whole population: all individuals should be aware of their own responsibility for creating a sustainable future in terms of ecology, economy, social re…

Musical resources for intercultural work in the elementary classroom
2010
It's a fact that multiculturalism is a reality in the classrooms in all European countries and the response to this situation shouldn't be expected to come from the institutions or the administration but from schools themselves and professionals. Teachers may find powerful tools for this answer in music, dance, literature, games... since they are considered collective activities which let children start learning in a different and playful way. All these activities appear to be a rich heritage as they are transmitted from parents to children containing the essence of knowledge, beliefs and customs of each culture. They may have many different styles and structures according to the historical…
