Diagnóstico etilógico de la disfunción ventricular izquierda con tomografia computerizada: comparación con coronariografía y cardiorresonancia

2012

[EN] Introduction and objectives To evaluate the capability of multidetector computed tomography to diagnose the coronary etiology of left ventricular dysfunction compared with using invasive coronary angiography and magnetic resonance. Methods Forty consecutive patients with left ventricular dysfunction of uncertain etiology underwent invasive coronary angiography and contrast magnetic resonance. All patients were evaluated with multidetector computed tomography including coronary calcium presence and score, noninvasive coronary angiography, and myocardial tissue assessment. Results The sensitivity and specificity of the presence of coronary calcium to identify left ventricular dysfunction…

MDCT Enteroclysis and Enterography

2015

Since the first studies suggesting its possible role in the management of Crohn’s disease patients, multidetector computed tomography has usually been considered a useful diagnostic technique in Crohn’s disease for the detection of extraenteric complications, as intra-abdominal abscesses, the study of strictures, prestenotic dilatations, fistulas, and postsurgical complications. Moreover, it is a widely available technique and is considered the gold standard in emergency.

ECG-gated multislice computed tomography angiography as a comprehensive non-invasive imaging tool in patient with aortic coarctation

2021

We describe a case of a 52-year-old-woman with aortic coarctation demonstrated by means of 40-slice MSCT angiography. Based on the information extracted from MSCT it was possible to display the anatomical configuration of the disease, the thoraco-abdominal collateral pathways. The best therapeutic approach was established on the basis of MSCT findings. MSCT is a reliable and comprehensive tool for the assessment of adult patients with aortic coarctation. Imaging Evaluation of Facial Complex Strut Fractures

2012

High-resolution multidetector computed tomography with multiplanar reformations and 3-D postprocessing often provides the detail necessary for preoperative assessment of facial injuries. Maxillofacial fractures are classified in the following manner: upper face fractures, midface fractures (the most frequent), Le Fort fractures, and lower face or mandible fractures. The facial skeleton is a framework of vertical and horizontal buttresses that ensures a better resistance to trauma, but serves also as reference for maxillofacial surgery to restore facial size and shape. Radiologists should know how to diagnose and report the main types of facial fracture.

Imaging of Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors: From Diagnosis to Evaluation of Therapeutic Response

2016

Once considered an obscure tumor entity with poor prognosis, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are nowadays recognized as the most common mesenchymal tumors of the alimentary tract. GISTs differ from other mesenchymal neoplasms at pathology since 90% of them exhibit strong immunohistochemical staining for KIT, a tyrosinase kinase growth factor receptor. In the early 2000s, the ability of imatinib mesylate, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, to inhibit KIT established a new paradigm for cancer treatment. A reduction in lesion size may not be observed or may appear many months after therapy; thus, tumor response criteria alternative to the Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumors were dev…

Coronary artery calcium and physical performance as determinants of mortality in older age: The AGES-Reykjavik Study

2013

Background. Coronary artery calcium (CAC) and physical performance have been shown to be associated with mortality, but it is not clear whether one of them modifies the association. We investigated the association between the extent of CAC and physical performance among older individuals and explored these individual and combined effects on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and non-CVD mortality. Methods. We studied 4074 participants of the AGES–Reykjavik Study who were free from coronary heart disease, had a CAC score calculated from computed tomography scans and had data on mobility limitations and gait speed at baseline in 2002–2006 at a mean age of 76 years. Register-based mortalit…

SEMI-AUTOMATIC VOLUMETRIC SEGMENTATION OF THE UPPER AIRWAYS IN PATIENTS WITH PIERRE ROBIN SEQUENCE

2014

Pierre Robin malformation is a rare craniofacial dysmorphism whose pathogenesis is multifactorial. Although there is some agreement in non-invasive treatment in less severe cases, the dispute is still open on cases with severe respiratory impairment. We present a semi-automatic novel diagnostic tool for calculating upper airway volume, in order to eventually address surgery in patients with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS). Multidetector CT datasets of two patients and two controls were tested to assess the proposed method for ROI segmentation, upper airway volume computation and three-dimensional reconstructions. The experimental results show an irregular pattern and a severely reduced cross-s…

Shear stress alterations in the celiac trunk of patients with a continuous-flow left ventricular assist device as shown by in-silico and in-vitro flo…

2017

Background The use of left ventricular assist devices (LVADs) to treat advanced cardiac heart failure is constantly increasing, although this device leads to high risk for gastrointestinal bleeding. Methods Using in-silico flow analysis, we quantified hemodynamic alterations due to continuous-flow LVAD (HeartWare, Inc., Framingham, MA) in the celiac trunk and major branches of the abdominal aorta, and then explored the relationship between wall shear stress (WSS) and celiac trunk orientation. To assess outflow from the aortic branch, a 3-dimensional-printed patient-specific model of the celiac trunk reconstructed from an LVAD-supported patient was used to estimate echocardiographic outflow …

ECG-GATED MULTIDETECTOR COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF THE POSTOPERATIVE ASCENDING AORTA

2009

This study was undertaken to define the role of electrocardiographically (ECG)-gated multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) in the assessment of the postoperative ascending aorta. From November 2006 to June 2007, 21 patients, [11 men, ten women; age +/- standard deviation (SD): 62.7 +/- 10.8 years] with a history of ascending aorta replacement underwent ECG-gated MDCT and were prospectively included in our study. Ascending aorta replacement had been performed with different surgical techniques: Bentall-De Bono (four patients, 19%), Tirone-David (five patients, 23%), and modified Tirone-David with creation of aortic neosinuses (12 patients, 57%). Two patients were excluded from MDCT evalua…
