Exploiting multimodality for intelligent mobile access to pervasive services in cultural heritage sites
2010
In this chapter the role of multimodality in intelligent, mobile guides for cultural heritage environments is discussed. Multimodal access to information contents enables the creation of systems with a higher degree of accessibility and usability. A multimodal interaction may involve several human interaction modes, such as sight, touch and voice to navigate contents, or gestures to activate controls. We first start our discussion by presenting a timeline of cultural heritage system evolution, spanning from 2001 to 2008, which highlights design issues such as intelligence and context-awareness in providing information. Then, multimodal access to contents is discussed, along with problems an…
Comparing the Capabilities of Mobile Platforms for Business App Development
2015
Businesses increasingly embrace the possibilities of mobile computing. While there is broad advice for app developers in general, development of apps for enterprises is hardly covered. Business apps support internal processes and contribute to customer relationship management. The heterogeneity of platforms for mobile devices makes development difficult. At the same time, companies seek to support several platforms with their apps to maximize customer acceptance and to support the platforms best suited for their employees. Aiming at improving the knowledge on business app development, we present a framework for assessing mobile platforms. For this purpose, we have developed a distinct set o…
Location-based media sharing in a MP2P network
2008
In both academia and industry, peer-to-peer (p2p) applications have attracted great attention. This paper introduces and implemented a novel location-based multimedia application, the Multimedia Traveling Journal application (PhotoJournal) that employs the p2p paradigm and enables location-based content sharing among mobile users.
User requirements and resource control for cooperative multimedia applications
1997
The spread of distributed multimedia applications is setting forth a new set of challenges in the management of host and network resources for guaranteeing Quality of Service (QoS). When the multimedia applications compete for resources as in the case of a cooperative multimedia environment, the management task becomes even more difficult. In this work, we first discuss QoS for multimedia applications. We then present the architectural and implementation details of a Cooperative Multimedia Environment (CME) made up of Cooperative Multimedia Applications (COMMA), one for each user. A COMMA presents a user with a single interface that allows him to invite other users to a cooperative session,…
Developing web-based learning resources in school education: a user-centered approach
2010
Published version of an article from the journal:Interdisciplinary Journal of Knowledge and Learning Objects. Also available from the publisher:http://www.ijello.org/Volume6/IJELLOv6p115-135Hadjerrouit688.pdf Web-based learning resources (WBLRs) are potentially powerful tools for enhancing teachingand learning processes in school education. They can provide teachers and learners with a widerange of new and exciting experiences that are not possible in a traditional classroom. However,WBLRs are still the domain of technical and software experts rather than teachers and learners. As a result, much of the development of WBLRs is carried out without a true understanding ofissues pertinent to lea…
Tracing Potential School Shooters in the Digital Sphere
2010
There are over 300 known school shooting cases in the world and over ten known cases where the perpetrator(s) have been prohibited to perform the attack at the last moment or earlier. Interesting from our point of view is that in many cases the perpetrators have expressed their views in social media or on their web page well in advance, and often also left suicide messages in blogs and other forums before their attack, along the planned date and place. This has become more common towards the end of this decennium. In some cases this has made it possible to prevent the attack. In this paper we will look at the possibilities to find commonalities of the perpetrators, beyond the fact that they…

EXPLORING THE EFFECTS OF DISCUSSION AND TEXT PLANNING STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE AND ASSESS WRITTEN COMMUNICATION SKILLS
2016

Comparative Study of the Mobile Learning Architectures
2016
International audience; With the emergence of mobile devices (Smart Phone, PDA, UMPC, game consoles, etc.), learning is changing from electronic learning (e-Learning) to mobile learning (m-learning). In fact, due to the mobility feature, it seems that the m-learning have to be adapted with the change within the context. Several researches addressed this issue and implemented a mobile learning environment to prove its usefulness and feasibility in various domains. In this article, we conduct a comparative study between a list of mobile learning architectures and methods that are presented in the literature. The performance of these architectures is evaluated based on several criteria, such a…
