Kielen oppimisen virtauksia ja pedagogiikan pyörteitä : näkökulmia tutkimukseen ja laajeneviin oppimisympäristöihin
2015
In this introduction to the Yearbook of the Finnish Association for Applied Linguistics (AFinLA), we outline current theoretical flows in research on language learning and teaching. Recently, phenomena such as multilingualism, increasing migration, multimodality and the emergence of technologically-mediated learning environments have led researchers of L2 learning and pedagogy to reconsider central notions in their fields. In current theorization of language learning, conceptualizations of language, learning, learners and the world they inhabit increasingly emphasize the dynamic and situated nature of the learning process. In outlining this changing theoretical landscape, we draw on the thr…
Under the magnifying glass: critical moments in virtual exchange
2022
Virtual Exchange (VE) is a form of experiential learning that relies heavily on learning-by-doing and reflection. The present study draws on visual data comprising students’ perceptions of critical learning incidents presented under an imaginary magnifying glass. To complete this project-closing reflective activity, the students had to describe a critical moment that they had experienced during VE and present it in a visual form. Data was collected longitudinally, in three projects (2019, 2020, and 2021) that followed the same pedagogical design and focused on the theme of tourism. The collaborating universities were from three countries: Poland, Finland, and the Netherlands. We used the me…

Erilaisia tiedon esitystapoja oppitunneilla eli ns. multimodaalisuutta on tutkittu runsaasti 2000-luvun vaihteesta alkaen. Tähän mennessä pystytään osoittamaan, ettei oppituntien pintarakenteiden eroavaisuuksilla voida selittää opiskelijoiden erilaisia oppimistuloksia, joten on tarve kehittää menetelmiä, joilla oppituntien syvärakennetta voidaan tutkia.

Planting in the pandemic : surveillance on social media
2023
This article looks at interest-driven and informal social media practices that have flourished in the pandemic period and its ensuing renaissance of domesticity. It investigates how tending plants and discussing them on social media serve as a particular site for connecting around loving and taking care of plants. Its focus is on the discursive means with which posters – guided by social media algorithms – rhetorically co-construct a morally acceptable version of a pandemic lifestyle around houseplants. More specifically, drawing on multimodal discourse studies, critical sociolinguistics and work on digital surveillance, it investigates how members of a Finland-based social media site obser…

Bodily expressions of dominance in children's reasoning : an analysis of multimodal and sociometric data
2015
This case study explores how two Hungarian children argue for their choices in a decision- making task in which they were asked to pick objects useful on a deserted island. The study involves an analysis of the multimodal data of the video-recorded tasks, carried out as pair-work, and sociometric background data that were collected in order to build an initial understanding of the participants’ social relations. The aim of the study is to discover how dominance relations manifest in bodily acts during reasoning. Results show that dominance was expressed by specific embodied strategies such as by taking away objects or replacing them, and that the bodily gestures were closely intertwined wit…

Fingerspelling English words in Finnish sign language context : a multimodal view on interaction
2012
Tutkimus on tehty etnografiseen tutkimusalaan sijoittuvan MDA:n (Mediated Discourse Analysis) viitekehyksessä. MDA on monimenetelmällinen lähestymistapa, joka tarkastelee sosiaalista toimintaan kokonaisvaltaisesti ottaen huomioon myös ei-kielelliset resurssit. Analysointimenetelmät on valittu tutkimuksen aineistoon ja tavoitteisiin soveltuviksi multimodaalisen vuorovaikutuksen, sosiaalisemiotiikan ja viitt…
