The prerequisites for opening a meeting, or beginning any kind of interaction for that matter, are participants’ presence and shared orientation towards the situation at hand. This paper analyses how the initial moments of technology-mediated business meetings involving distributed work groups are organized sequentially and multimodally. Drawing on video-recorded meetings in an international company, it documents the multimodal practices used in the process of establishing co-orientation to the shared meeting space and achieving entry into the meeting. Monadic second-order logic over pictures and recognizability by tiling systems

We show that a set of pictures (rectangular arrays of symbols) is recognized by a finite tiling system if and only if it is definable in existential monadic second-order logic. As a consequence, finite tiling systems constitute a notion of recognizability over two-dimensional inputs which at the same time generalizes finite-state recognizability over strings and matches a natural logic. The proof is based on the Ehrenfeucht-FraIsse technique for first-order logic and an implementation of “threshold counting” within tiling systems.
Improving point matching on multimodal images using distance and orientation automatic filtering

International audience; Speed Up Robust Features SURF is one of the most popular and efficient methods used for image registration task. In order to achieve a correct registration, a good matching of feature point is required. However in the case of multimodal images, the high and non-linear intensity changes between different modalities led to many outliers (mismatching of detected points) and consequently a fail in the registration. Abstract The identification of transport policy measures able to reduce the use of private cars for home-to-school travel is very relevant to reduce congestion during peak hours and to ensure that the areas around schools have livable environments. In this article, we take under scrutiny one of its technologies, namely, empowerment, by which we mean a state characterised by feelings of strength, ability and power that enable agency. The article offers a contribution to the interaction research in the foreign language teaching and learning. It starts with an overview of various research approaches to the foreign language teaching and learning, from the 60s to the present days. A multimodal analysis of an excerpt of videorecorded classroom interaction is then provided. The analysis is focused on several aspects of classroom participation and teaching sequences. Some implications of the present research for teachers' training are finally provided.

Tutkimus on osa Jyväskylän yliopiston kielten laitoksen Pohjoinen monikielisyys - hanketta, jonka tavoitteena on tutkia monikielisyyttä Pohjoiskalotin alueella. Projektissa hyödynnetään sosiolingvistiikkaa, kriittistä diskurs-sintutkimusta ja etnografiaa. Tässä tutkimuksessa esiin nousevat mm. kielentäminen, heteroglossia ja kieli-politiikka.
