Students’ Interpretations of a Persuasive Multimodal Video About Vaccines

The present study investigated students’ (N = 404) interpretations of the main message and use of modes in a persuasive multimodal video on vaccines. It also examined whether students’ topic knowledge, language arts grades, and self-identified gender were associated with their interpretations. Students analyzed a YouTube video in which two entertainers demonstrated the importance of vaccinating children. Students’ interpretations of the usefulness of vaccines varied in terms of quality of reasoning, which was associated with students’ topic knowledge. Abstract This article contributes to the recent conversation analytic interest in exploring the mechanisms of action formation and ascription by investigating how embodied interactional practices involving material objects relate to the organization of social action. Distance crossing and alignment in online humanitarian discourse

Abstract This article analyzes multimodal genres of current online humanitarian discourse such as mission statements, annual reports and photo galleries to find how the construals of beneficiaries and humanitarian organizations align with the motives, values and emotional dispositions of prospective donors. The discursive reduction of distance between the donor and the beneficiary is likely to produce solicitation effects and enable self-legitimization. This paper addresses the issue of video game localisation focusing on the different strategies to be used from the point of view of Translation Studies. Radical pleurectomy and chemoradiation for malignant pleural mesothelioma: The outcome of incomplete resections

The type of surgery (radical pleurectomy (RP) vs. extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP)) remains controversial for malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Macroscopic complete resection (MCR) is a key prognostic factor. It is unclear, if patients undergoing incomplete RP within a standardized multimodality treatment protocols have any advantage in terms of survival and if EPP could theoretically have avoided incomplete resections (R2).Eighty-eight patients underwent RP followed by chemoradiation from 2002 to 2011 within a prospective multimodality treatment study at a single institution. Matt Kish’s “Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated”: A Multimodal Approach

Abstract The purpose of this essay is to address the multimodal nature of Matt Kish’s project Every Page of Moby-Dick, Illustrated, where Herman Melville’s 1851 masterpiece is set as paratext. Particular focus is set on the portrayals of Captain Achab, specifically “Page 153”, “Page 465” and “Page 469”. The basic theoretical framework has been offered by Alice Gibbons’ theorization of multimodal cognitive poetics and Sigrid Norris’ systematization of multimodal (inter)action. Useful insight has been lent by Sharon Cameron’s work on allegories of the body in Melville’s writing.
