NEXT-100 Technical Design Report (TDR). Executive summary

2012

[EN] In this Technical Design Report (TDR) we describe the NEXT-100 detector that will search for neutrinoless double beta decay (ßß0v) in 136XE at the Laboratorio Subterráneo de Canfranc (LSC), in Spain. The document formalizes the design presented in our Conceptual Design Report (CDR): an electroluminescence time projection chamber, with separate readout planes for calorimetry and tracking, located, respectively, behind cathode and anode. The detector is designed to hold a maximum of about 150 kg of xenon at 15 bar, or 100 kg at 10 bar. This option builds in the capability to increase the total isotope mass by 50% while keeping the operating pressure at a manageable level. The readout pla…

Design and realization of a portable multichannel continuous wave fNIRS

2014

A design and implementation of a portable functional Near InfraRed Spectroscopy embedded system prototype is described. In this theoretical and experimental work, we present an embedded system hosting 64 LED sources and 128 Silicon PhotoMultiplier detectors (SiPM). The elementary part of the structure is a flexible probe “leaf” consisting of 16 SiPMs, 4 couples of LEDs, each operating at two wavelengths, and a temperature sensor. The hardware system is based on an ARM main microcontroller that allows to perform both the switching time of LEDs and the acquisition of the SiPM outputs. The performed preliminary experimental tests achieved very promising results, thus demonstrating the effectiv…

ECRIS plasma spectroscopy with a high resolution spectrometer

2020

Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Source (ECRIS) plasmas contain high-energy electrons and highly charged ions implying that only noninvasive methods such as optical emission spectroscopy are reliable in their characterization. A high-resolution spectrometer (10 pm FWHM at 632 nm) enabling the detection of weak emission lines has been developed at University of Jyväskylä, Department of Physics (JYFL) for this purpose. Diagnostics results probing the densities of ions, neutral atoms, and the temperature of the cold electron population in the JYFL 14 GHz ECRIS are described. For example, it has been observed that the cold electron temperature drops from 40 eV to 20 eV when the extraction volta…

On shakedown of elastic plastic solids

1988

Making reference to elastic perfectly plastic solids subjected to cyclic loads, the problem of the shakedown load factor is considered and the relevant Euler-Lagrange equations are discussed. It is proved that the solution to these equations describes the gradient, with respect to the load multiplier, of the steady-state response of the solid body to the cyclic loads at the shakedown limit, and that it thus enables one to predict the nature of the impending collapse. These results are then extended to the more general case of loads varying within a given load domain.

A Design of Scintillator Tiles Read Out by Surface-Mounted SiPMs for a Future Hadron Calorimeter

2015

Precision calorimetry using highly granular sampling calorimeters is being developed based on the particle flow concept within the CALICE collaboration. One design option of a hadron calorimeter is based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to detect photons generated in plastic scintillator tiles. Driven by the need of automated mass assembly of around ten million channels stringently required by the high granularity, we developed a design of scintillator tiles directly coupled with surface-mounted SiPMs. A cavity is created in the center of the bottom surface of each tile to provide enough room for the whole SiPM package and to improve collection of the light produced by incident particles…

SiPMs coated with TPB: coating protocol and characterization for NEXT

2012

[EN] Silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) are the photon detectors chosen for the tracking readout in NEXT, a neutrinoless \bb decay experiment which uses a high pressure gaseous xenon time projection chamber (TPC). The reconstruction of event track and topology in this gaseous detector is a key handle for background rejection. Among the commercially available sensors that can be used for tracking, SiPMs offer important advantages, mainly high gain, ruggedness, cost-effectiveness and radio-purity. Their main drawback, however, is their non sensitivity in the emission spectrum of the xenon scintillation (peak at 175 nm). This is overcome by coating these sensors with the organic wavelength shifte…

Development of Structured Scintillator Tiles for High-Granularity Calorimeters

2020

Calorimeters with a fine 3-D segmentation are considered to be a very promising technology for future high-energy physics experiments, since they provide in combination with particle flow algorithms excellent jet energy resolution and particle identification capabilities. Depending on the size, millions of individual channels consisting of a photosensor coupled to a scintillator tile have to be assembled. The usage of structured plastic scintillators with optically separated segments simplifies the mass production. We present the design, production, and performance of a 36 cm × 36 cm scintillator tile divided into 144 segments matching the geometry of the SiPM-based calorimeter frontend dev…

PPG embedded system for blood pressure monitoring

2014

In this work, we have designed and implemented a microcontroller-based embedded system for blood pressure monitoring through a PhotoPlethysmoGraphic (PPG) technique. In our system, it is possible to perform PPG measurements via reflectance mode. Hardware novelty of our system consists in the adoption of Silicon PhotoMultiplier detectors. The signal received from the photodetector is used to calculate the instantaneous heart rate and therefore the heart rate variability. The obtained results show that, by using our system, it is possible to easily extract both the PPG and the breath signal. These signals can be used to monitor the patients during the convalescence both in hospital and at hom…

Characterization of SiPM properties at liquid nitrogen temperature

2016

SiPM operation at cryogenic temperatures fails for many common devices. A particular type with deep channels in the silicon substrate instead of quenching resistors was thoroughly characterized from room temperature down to liquid nitrogen temperature by illuminating it with low light levels. The devices were mounted in vacuum with the temperature stabilized to allow long-term operation. SiPM signals from a LED pulser were acquired with single-pixel resolution. Generalized fits to the charge collection spectra were used to extract properties like single-pixel gain, inter-pixel variation, breakdown voltage, and photon detection efficiency. With these measurements a deeper investigation of th…

Designing voltage multipliers with nanofluidic diodes immersed in aqueous salt solutions.

2016

[EN] Membranes with nanofluidic diodes allow the selective control of molecules in physiological salt solutions at ambient temperature. The electrical coupling of the membranes with conventional electronic elements such as capacitors suggests opportunities for the external monitoring of sensors and actuators. We demonstrate experimentally and theoretically the voltage multiplier functionality of simple electrical networks composed of membranes with conical nanopores coupled to load capacitors. The robust operation of half and full wave voltage multipliers is achieved in a broad range of experimental conditions (single pore and multipore membranes, electrolyte concentrations, voltage amplitu…
