Seasonal precipitation interpolation at the Valencia region with multivariate methods using geographic and topographic information
2009
The spatial pattern of precipitation is a complex variable that strongly depends on other geographic and topographic factors. As precipitation is usually known only at certain locations, interpolation procedures are needed in order to predict this variable in other regions. The use of multivariate interpolation methods is usually preferred, as secondary variables—generally derived using GIS tools—correlated with precipitation can be included. In this paper, a comparative study on different univariate and multivariate interpolation methodologies is presented. Our study area is centred in the region of Valencia, located to the eastern Spanish Mediterranean coast. The followed methodology can …
The role of the diagnostic areas in the assessment of landslide susceptibility models: a test in the sicilian chain
2011
Abstract The aim of the research was to verify and compare the predictive power of different diagnostic areas in assessing landslide susceptibility with a multivariate approach. Scarps, landslide areas (the union between scarp and accumulation zones) and areas uphill from crowns, for rotational slides, source or scarp areas and landslide areas, for flows, have been tested. A multivariate approach was applied to assess the landslide susceptibility on the basis of three selected conditioning factors (lithology, slope angle, and topographic wetness index), which were combined in a Unique Condition Unit (UCU) layer. By intersecting the UCU layer with the vector layer of the diagnostic areas, la…
Re: The Clinical Impact of Bacteremia on Outcomes in Elderly Patients with Pyelonephritis or Urinary Sepsis: A Prospective Multicenter Study
2018
Background Bacteremia is common in severe urinary infections, but its influence on the outcomes is not well established. The aim of this study was to assess the association of bacteremia with outcomes in elderly patients admitted to hospital with pyelonephritis or urinary sepsis. Methods This prospective muticenter observational study was conducted at 5 Spanish hospitals. All patients aged >65 years with pyelonephritis or urinary sepsis admitted to the departments of internal medicine and with urine and blood cultures obtained at admission to hospital were eligible. Transfer to ICU, length of hospital stay, hospital mortality and all cause 30-day mortality in bacteremic and non-bacteremic g…
Application of multivariate t-pattern analysis in the study of social interactions in rats
2013
A basic tenet in the realm of modern behavioral sciences is that behavior consists of patterns in time. For this reason, investigations of behavior deal with sequences that are not easily perceivable by the unaided observer. This problem calls for improved means of detection, data handling and analysis. This review focuses on the analysis of the temporal structure of behavior carried out by means of a multivariate approach known as T-pattern analysis. Using this technique, recurring sequences of behavioral events, usually hard to detect, can be unveiled and carefully described. T-pattern analysis has been successfully applied in the study of various aspects of human or animal behavior such …
Protective role of mindfulness, self-compassion and psychological flexibility on the burnout subtypes among psychology and nursing undergraduate stud…
2021
Abstract To explore the relationship between mindfulness, self-compassion and psychological flexibility, and the burnout subtypes in university students of the Psychology and Nursing degrees, and to analyse possible risk factors for developing burnout among socio-demographic and studies-related characteristics. Design Cross-sectional study conducted on a sample of 644 undergraduate students of Nursing and Psychology from two Spanish universities. Methods The study was conducted between December 2015 and May 2016. Bivariate Pearson's correlations were computed to analyse the association between mindfulness facets, self-compassion and psychological flexibility, and levels of burnout. Multivar…
Impact of preoperative risk on metastatic progression and cancer-specific mortality in patients with adverse pathology at radical prostatectomy.
2017
Objective To evaluate the impact of preoperative risk category on metastatic disease and prostate cancer-specific mortality (CSM) in patients with prostate cancer (PCa) with adverse pathology at radical prostatectomy (RP). Patients and Methods The records of 6 943 patients who underwent RP at a European tertiary centre were analysed. Biochemical recurrence (BCR), metastatic disease and CSM were assessed for patients with adverse pathology at RP, and stratified according to preoperative low- vs intermediate-/high-risk PCa groups. Kaplan–Meier, cumulative incidence, Cox regression and competing risk regression analyses were performed. Results In patients with extracapsular extension, the meta…
Biogenic Selenium Nanoparticles: A Fine Characterization to Unveil Their Thermodynamic Stability
2021
Among the plethora of available metal(loid) nanomaterials (NMs), those containing selenium are interesting from an applicative perspective, due to their high biocompatibility. Microorganisms capable of coping with toxic Se-oxyanions generate mostly Se nanoparticles (SeNPs), representing an ideal and green alternative over the chemogenic synthesis to obtain thermodynamically stable NMs. However, their structural characterization, in terms of biomolecules and interactions stabilizing the biogenic colloidal solution, is still a black hole that impairs the exploitation of biogenic SeNP full potential. Here, spherical and thermodynamically stable SeNPs were produced by a metal(loid) tolerant Mic…
Is the nuclear status of an embryo an independent factor to predict its ability to develop to term?
2012
Objective To determine the prognostic impact of the embryo nuclear status at day 2 among other major morphologic parameters (first cleavage at day 1, number of blastomeres and anuclear fragmentation at day 2) on the birth rate. Design Retrospective study. Setting Hospital IVF department. Patient(s) Women undergoing 1,629 day 2 transfers of 2,732 embryos from May 2006 to November 2008. Intervention(s) Four groups according to the embryo nuclear status. Main Outcome Measure(s) Implantation, miscarriage, and birth rates. Result(s) Univariate analysis indicated significantly higher birth rates when all blastomeres were mononucleated (15.0%) compared with embryos with not all blastomeres mononuc…
Advances in blind source separation for spatial data
2021
Effects of Polyphenol, Measured by a Biomarker of Total Polyphenols in Urine, on Cardiovascular Risk Factors After a Long-Term Follow-Up in the PREDI…
2016
Several epidemiological studies have shown an inverse association between the consumption of polyphenol-rich foods and risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, accuracy and reliability of these studies may be increased using urinary total polyphenol excretion (TPE) as a biomarker for total polyphenol intake. Our aim was to assess if antioxidant activity, measured by a Folin-Ciocalteu assay in urine, is correlated with an improvement in cardiovascular risk factors (blood pressure and serum glucose, cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations) in an elderly population at high risk. A longitudinal study was performed with 573 participants (aged 67.3 ± 5.9) f…
