The paper offers a hypothesis of interpretation of the decorative patterns of the Casina cinese at the Favorita Park in Palermo which is based on the component "in Chinese style" that is characterized by a strong Confucian element.
A Systematic Nomenclature for the Insect Brain
2014
SummaryDespite the importance of the insect nervous system for functional and developmental neuroscience, descriptions of insect brains have suffered from a lack of uniform nomenclature. Ambiguous definitions of brain regions and fiber bundles have contributed to the variation of names used to describe the same structure. The lack of clearly determined neuropil boundaries has made it difficult to document precise locations of neuronal projections for connectomics study. To address such issues, a consortium of neurobiologists studying arthropod brains, the Insect Brain Name Working Group, has established the present hierarchical nomenclature system, using the brain of Drosophila melanogaster…
Pintura califal de Bédar (Almería, 355/966)
2020
Analysis of pigments from Spanish works of art using a portable EDXRF spectrometer
2002
Nowadays there is an intensive program for the conservation, restoration and analysis of the impressive and extensive Spanish cultural heritage. In the last few years, the Unidad de Arqueometria of the ICMUV has carry out a great quantity of in situ EDXRF analysis of pigments on materials of historic and cultural interest (altarpieces, frescoes, canvas, sculptures, etc.) from museums and churches of the whole of the Spanish geography. Here we present a few examples of the analysis of works of art using x-ray fluorescence spectrometry with a portable system based on x-ray tubes and a non-cryogenic Si-PIN detector. EDXRF qualitative and non-destructive analyses of stone, pigments and preparat…
I DIPINTI MURALI STACCATI: CRITICITÀ E NUOVE PROPOSTE
2015
Synaptic release of zinc from brain slices: factors governing release, imaging, and accurate calculation of concentration.
2006
Cerebrocortical neurons that store and release zinc synaptically are widely recognized as critical in maintenance of cortical excitability and in certain forms of brain injury and disease. Through the last 20 years, this synaptic release has been observed directly or indirectly and reported in more than a score of publications from over a dozen laboratories in eight countries. However, the concentration of zinc released synaptically has not been established with final certainty. In the present work we have considered six aspects of the methods for studying release that can affect the magnitude of zinc release, the imaging of the release, and the calculated concentration of released zinc. We…
Colours of quality: structural (but not pigment) coloration informs about male quality in a polychromatic lizard
2014
Chromatic signals result from the differential absorption of light by chemical compounds (pigment-based colours) and/or from differential scattering of light by integument nanostructures (structural colours). Both structural and pigment-based colours can be costly to produce, maintain and display, and have been shown to convey information about a variety of individual quality traits. Male wall lizards, Podarcis muralis, display conspicuously coloured ventral and lateral patches during ritualized inter- and intrasexual displays: ventral colours (perceived as orange, yellow or white by humans) are pigment based, while the ultraviolet (UV)-blue of the outer ventral scales (OVS), located along …
Differences in conspicuousness between alternative color morphs in a polychromatic lizard
2015
In polychromatic species, differences in conspicuousness among alternative color morphs may affect the costs and benefits relating to signal detectability by primary receivers and unintended observers. Using visual modeling, we studied the conspicuousness of the body coloration in a ventrally polychromatic population of common wall lizards (Podarcis muralis). This species shows a complex color pattern that combines brown dorsal coloration, long-wavelength–biased ventral coloration, and ventrolateral ultraviolet (UV)-blue patches that are used to signal male quality. Considering simultaneously the visual system of P. muralis and lizard predators, we quantified the chromatic and achromatic (i…
