Modulation of muscle-tendon interaction in the human triceps surae during an energy dissipation task.

2017

The compliance of elastic elements allows muscles to dissipate energy safely during eccentric contractions. This buffering function is well documented in animal models but our understanding of its mechanism in humans is confined to non-specific tasks, requiring a subsequent acceleration of the body. The present study aimed to examine the behaviour of the human triceps surae muscle-tendon unit (MTU) during a pure energy dissipation task, under two loading conditions. Thirty-nine subjects performed a single-leg landing task, with- and without added mass. Ultrasound measurements were combined with 3D kinematics and kinetics to determine instantaneous length changes of MTUs, muscle fascicles, A…

Effects of muscle action type on corticospinal excitability and triceps surae muscle-tendon mechanics.

2018

This study investigated whether the specific motor control strategy reported for eccentric muscle actions is dependent on muscle mechanical behavior. Motor evoked potentials, Hoffman reflex (H-reflex), fascicle length, pennation angle, and fascicle velocity of soleus muscle were compared between isometric and two eccentric conditions. Ten volunteers performed maximal plantarflexion trials in isometric, slow eccentric (25°/s), and fast eccentric (100°/s) conditions, each in a different randomized testing session. H-reflex normalized by the preceding M wave (H/M) was depressed in both eccentric conditions compared with isometric ( P < 0.001), while no differences in fascicle length and pe…

Mechanical and neural function of triceps surae in elite racewalking

2016

Racewalking is a unique event combining mechanical elements of walking with speeds associated with running. It is currently unclear how racewalking technique impacts upon lower limb muscle-tendon function, despite the relevance of this to muscle economy and overall performance. The present study examined triceps surae neuromechanics in 11 internationally competitive racewalkers (age 25±11 years) walking and running on a treadmill at speeds between 4.5 - 13.8 km/h whilst triceps surae fascicle lengths, electromyography and kinematic data were recorded. Cumulative muscle activity required to traverse a unit distance (CMAPD) was calculated for each muscle. Medial gastrocnemius (MG) and soleus …

The reliability of measuring medial gastrocnemius muscle-tendon unit lengths during gait

2021

Background Ultrasound imaging combined with 3D motion analysis allows for in-vivo assessment of muscle-tendon unit lengths during gait. The clinical relevance of analysing the medial gastrocnemius (MG) and Achilles muscle-tendon junction (MTJ), MG mid-muscle belly fascicles (FAS) and muscle thickness was shown. However, their reliability error estimations over the gait cycle is unknown. Research question What are the intra- and inter-session errors associated with extracting MG belly, thickness, FAS and tendon lengths using ultrasound during gait in healthy participants? Methods 3D gait analysis was carried out in ten healthy adults as they walked on an instrumented treadmill at a comfortab…

Effects of muscle action type on corticospinal excitability and triceps surae muscle-tendon mechanics

2014

The present study was designed to investigate corticospinal excitability modulation during maximum isometric and eccentric muscle actions with two different velocities. Moreover, the study aimed to clarify the effect of muscle action type on muscle-tendon mechanical behavior in order to shed light into the possible role of sensory information in modulating corticospinal excitability during different muscle actions. We compared motor evoked potentials (MEPs) to transcranial magnetic stimulation and Hoffman reflexes (H-reflex) in soleus muscle during isometric, slow eccentric (25 deg/s) and fast eccentric (100 deg/s) muscle actions. Concomitantly, ultrasonography was utilized to access soleus…

Fascicle-tendon interaction in v2 skate cross-country skiing : a case study

2015

Venymis-lyhenemis –sykli (SSC) on laajalti tutkittu liha-jänne -kompleksin (MTU) toimintamalli ihmisen liikkumisessa. Jotta SSC toiminta voidaan ymmärtää, lihaksen toiminta tulee mitata ultraäänen (US) avulla. Aiemmin yksi tutkimus on käsitellyt MTU:n toimintaa hiihdon aikana perinteisellä hiihtotavalla (Ishikawa, Sano et al. 2010). Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on tarjota ainutlaatuinen kokeellinen tulos MTU:n toiminnasta vapaan hiihdon V2- tekniikan aikana, sekä tarjota suosituksia tulevaa tutkimusta varten. Tutkimuksessa yksi kokenut hiihtäjä suoritti protokolla Vuokatin hiihtotunnelissa. Protokolla koostui kahdesta eri mittauskerrasta, joiden välissä suoritettiin 20 km mittainen hiihtok…

Doublet potentiation in the triceps surae is limited by series compliance and dynamic fascicle behavior.

2015

Activation of skeletal muscle twice in quick succession results in nonlinear force summation (i.e., doublet potentiation). The force contributed by a second activation is typically of augmented amplitude, longer in duration, and generated at a greater rate. The purpose of this study was to examine force summation in a muscle attached to a compliant tendon, where considerable internal shortening occurs during a fixed-end contraction. The triceps surae of 21 ( Experiment 1) and 9 ( Experiment 2) young adults were maximally activated with doublet stimulation of different interstimulus intervals (ISIs) (5-100 ms) at several muscle lengths. Ultrasound images acquired from lateral gastrocnemius …

Repeatability and sensitivity of passive mechanical stiffness measurements in the triceps surae muscle‐tendon complex

2021

Measurements of muscle-tendon unit passive mechanical properties are often used to illustrate acute and chronic responses to a training stimulus. The purpose of this study was to quantify the inter-session repeatability of triceps surae passive stiffness measurements in athletic and non-athletic populations, with the view to discussing its usefulness both as a muscle-tendon profiling tool and a control measure for studies with multiple data collection sessions. The study also aimed to observe the effects of quiet standing on passive stiffness parameters. Twenty-nine men (10 cyclists, nine triathletes, 10 controls) visited the laboratory on three separate occasions, where passive stiffness t…

Acute effects of static and dynamic stretching on the neuromuscular system

2019

Stretching is traditionally incorporated into pre-exercise routines in health, rehabilitation and sporting environments to condition the neuromuscular system for exercise. While a large body of evidence reported that stretching may acutely impair the subsequent muscular performance, some conflicting results highlight possible mitigating factors of neuromuscular responses variability. Because the limited data available do not present a clear consensus, the aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of different factors on neuromuscular responses to stretch: the muscle group, the stretch duration and modality. By means of four studies, it has been shown that static stretching may alter…

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation leads to physiological gains enhancing postural balance in the pre‐frail elderly

2015

International audience; Physiological aging leads to a progressive weakening of muscles and tendons, thereby disturbing the ability to control postural balance and consequently increasing exposure to the risks of falls. Here, we introduce a simple and easy-to-use neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) training paradigm designed to alleviate the postural control deficit in the elderly, the first hallmarks of which present as functional impairment. Nine pre-frail older women living in a long-term care facility performed 4 weeks of NMES training on their plantarflexor muscles, and seven nontrained, non-frail older women living at home participated in this study as controls. Participants w…
