Dynamic Perception of Plastic Movements: Biomechanics and Digital Artifacts

2017

The article offers some reflections on the body-space relationship through images, graphic translations and visual studies that converge into a contemporary digital illuminated avant-garde of the fourth virtual dimension. Starting from the study of the Soviet coreutics of the 1920s and the biomechanics of multimedia performances, it moves on the cinesthetic suggestions and to the dance theorization integrated with the musical score. Finally, some contemporary forms of digital image production are taken into account by addressing a number of issues regarding the exploration of the object-image and its experiential re-elaboration through the production of new graphic knowledge.

The phantoms of the opera—Stress offstage and stress onstage

2021

During opera performance singers deliver vocally demanding roles, follow a conductor, portray emotions of a musical work, act, dance, and engage with costumes, sets and props before an audience. Hence, opera performance is a stressful experience. This study examined different types of stress experiences by measuring the trajectories of 10 opera trainees’ heart rate variability (HRV) during two performances, covering onstage and offstage periods. We explored connections between HRV, self-reported stress measures, and expert-rated difficulty of the performed roles. We discovered that opera trainees had lower HRV and thus experienced greater physiological stress, while onstage compared to off…

Embodiment in Electronic Dance Music: Effects of musical content and structure on body movement

2018

Electronic dance music (EDM) is music produced with the foremost aim to make people move. While research has revealed relationships between movement features and, for example, musical, emotional, or personality characteristics, systematic investigations of genre differences and specifically of EDM are rather rare. This article aims at offering insights into the embodiment of EDM from three different angles: first from a genre-comparison perspective, then by comparing different EDM stimuli with each other, and finally by investigating embodiments in one specific EDM stimulus. Sixty participants moved freely to 16 stimuli of four different genres (EDM, Latin, Funk, Jazz – four stimuli/genre)…

Della musica e delle parole

2018

This article explores the relations between music and poetry, starting form Rousseau's theory of the origin of languages. Two main distinctions are considered: when poetry is written before music, and when music is written before poetry. "Non più andrai farfallone amoroso" by Daponte and Mozart is examined as an example of the first strategy; "Yesterday" by Paul McCartney as an example of the second one.

La portada de la iglesia de las Escuelas Pías de Gandía. Su proceso constructivo y modulación arquitectónico-musical

2020

The facade of the church of the Pious Schools of Gandia has not attracted the attention of researchers. However, its conception has a great architectural culture and constitutes an essential work to understand its context, fundamentally, that of the theoretical treatises of the Renaissance. From this study it is wanted to value its architecture and that it is considered as an outstanding ingredient to know its period of construction in general and jesuit architecture in particular. For its understanding, its interpretation in the culture of contemporary architecture treaties and, especially, in the architectural-musical theory of Leon Battista Alberti will be necessary.. Storia d'altre storie.

2020

The present paper analyses the strategies of racialization and genderization developed in the musical film Roman Scandals (Frank Tuttle 1933) and especially those used in the musical number “Keep Young and Beautiful”, in which Eddie (Eddie Cantor) uses blackface to hide in the bathrooms of ancient Rome in the company of half-naked white women and their black maids. Through a theoretical framework that draws on the contributions of Decolonial Studies, Postcolonialism Studies and Whiteness Studies, together with the methodological tools of Feminist Film Theory, we aim to reveal the phenomena of coloniality of power and gender that returns the white man’s position of power that he had lost as …
