Civil Religion or Nationalism? The National Day Celebrations in Norway

2021

The Norwegian National Day (17 May, also referred to as Constitution Day) stands out as one of the most popular National Day celebrations in Europe. According to surveys, around seven out of every 10 Norwegians take part in a public celebration during this day. This means that the National Day potentially has an impact on the way people reflect upon national identity and its relationship to the Lutheran heritage. In this paper, I will focus on the role religion plays in the Norwegian National Day rituals. Researchers have described these rituals as both containing a significant religious element and being rather secularized. In this article, I discuss the extent to which the theoretical con…

2020

Selective Kinship in Sicilian Cultural Identity: a Land Posing.

Sicilian history could be summarized as an endless succession of rulers that came from the sea. Thus Sicilian identity could be consid-ered as the epitome of a postcolonial identity, if there could be one. Its position at the exact center of the Mediterranean has made the island the gateway between European, African and Middle Eastern culture. This mix of insularity and cosmopolitism still dramatically affects the way Sicilians see themselves; in this paper my aim is to under-stand how this mix has impacted the perception of their own history by contemporary Sicilians. This paper seeks to shed light on some of the myths of the Sicilian past that influenced writers and thinkers from Sicily an…

Ragioni mostruose.

2022

2016

In chant IX of Iliad there is the long digression of Phoenix, Achilles’ pedagogue, and plays a strategic role, as is recognized by almost all scholars. For this reason, the mise en abyme is a tool to explore the ambiguous relationship between language and reality, which remain central to the relationship between Phoenix and Achilles. The mise en abyme reveals the sense of vertigo mirror between teacher and student, becoming a metaphor and representation of masterful strategy in which the teacher / parent connection, enacts generative operation and produces a continuous exchange of roles. Phoenix, teacher and “parent”, is a fragile figure, oscillating between authority and weakness.

Responsabilità e (de)merito negli epilli di Draconzio

2017

This paper dea…
