Novel silver-based nanoclay as an antimicrobial in polylactic acid food packaging coatings.

This paper presents a comprehensive performance study of polylactic acid (PLA) biocomposites, obtained by solvent casting, containing a novel silver-based antimicrobial layered silicate additive for use in active food packaging applications. The silver-based nanoclay showed strong antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Salmonella spp. Despite the fact that no exfoliation of the silver-based nanoclay in PLA was observed, as suggested by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS) experiments, the additive dispersed nicely throughout the PLA matrix to a nanoscale, yielding nanobiocomposites. Enzymatic Synthesis and Surface Deposition of Tin Dioxide using Silicatein-α

Nanostructured tin dioxide was synthesized by making use of the catalytic activity of silicatein-α. TEM, HRTEM, and XRD revealed the formation of cassiterite SnO2. Surface bound silicatein retains its biocatalytic activity. This was demonstrated by immobilizing silicatein on glass surfaces using a histidine-tag chelating anchor. The subsequent deposition of SnO2 on glass was monitored by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). This new aspect of silicatein activity toward the formation of metal oxides other than SiO2, TiO2, and BaTiO3 opens up new vistas in composite material synthesis.

Aqueous electrolyte-gated ZnO transistors for environmental and biological sensing

Electrolyte-gated transistors (EGTs) based on ZnO thin films, obtained by solution processing of suspensions of nanoparticles, have a low turn-on voltage (<0.5 V), a high on/off ratio and transconductance exceeding 0.2 mS. Importantly, the ZnO surface can be functionalized with a large variety of molecular recognition elements, making these devices ideal transducers in physiological and environmental monitoring. We present simple glucose-sensing and ion-selective EGTs, demonstrating the versatility of such devices in biosensing.

Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles under high pressure

We report by the first time a high pressure X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy study of cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles carried out at room temperature up to 17 GPa. In contrast with previous studies of nanoparticles, which proposed the transition pressure to be reduced from 20–27 GPa to 7.5–12.5 GPa (depending on particle size), we found that cobalt ferrite nanoparticles remain in the spinel structure up to the highest pressure covered by our experiments. In addition, we report the pressure dependence of the unit-cell parameter and Raman modes of the studied sample. One step continuous hydrothermal synthesis of very fine stabilized superparamagnetic nanoparticles of magnetite

International audience; Stable suspensions of citrated SPIO nanoparticles were synthesised in one step using a hydrothermal continuous process. Citrates control the crystallite size and the oxidation degree of metallic ions despite the very short reaction time (4 s). Magnetite particles, Fe2.94O4, with an average size of 4 nm and good monodispersity were obtained.

Functionalization of theranostic AGuIX® nanoparticles for PET/MRI/optical imaging

International audience; A novel trifunctional imaging probe containing a chelator of radiometal for PET, a NIR heptamethine cyanine dye, and a bioconjugatable handle, has been grafted onto AGuIX® nanoparticles via a Michael addition reaction. The resulting functionalized nanoparticles have been fully characterized, radiolabelled with 64Cu, and evaluated in a mice TSA tumor model using multimodal (PET/MRI/optical) imaging.
