Metal Oxide Nanostructures in Sensing
2019
Abstract Metal oxides are well-known materials for the sensor and biosensor applications. In fact, the surface of metal oxides is a key factor for effective interaction with target molecules. Tailoring of the surface properties of metal oxide allows improving sensitive properties. The recent advances in nanotechnology open new possibilities for applications of metal oxides. Reducing the grain size to nanoscale increases the active surface area and induces new effect due to the quantum confinement such as bandgap widening, room temperature photoluminescence, etc. The novel physical effects in metal oxide nanostructures could be used for the development of sensor tool with advanced parameters…
Nanoindentation and photoluminescence characterization of ZnO thin films and single crystals
2010
In this work an optical and micromechanical properties of ZnO films deposited on glass by simple method based on the mechanoactivated oxidation have been investigated and compared with those of bulk ZnO single crystal and commercial ZnO films. Results showed that investigated ZnO films have stable high adhesion with glass and can form grained structure with hardness 8–10 GPa or whiskers nanostructure with high hardness 18–20 GPa. Young’s modulus is in range from 80 to 120 GPa. Optical properties of obtained ZnO films with whiskers structure are typical for transparent high quality ZnO single crystal. These coatings also exhibit a photo-electric response which reflects on the change in resis…
Spectral characterization of bulk and nanostructured aluminum nitride
2009
Spectral characteristics including photoluminescence (PL) spectra and its excitation spectra for different AlN materials (AlN ceramics, macro size powder and nanostructured forms such as nanopowder, nanorods and nanotips) were investigated at room temperature. Besides the well known UV-blue (around 400 nm) and red (600 nm) luminescence, the 480 nm band was also observed as an asymmetric long-wavelength shoulder of the UV-blue PL band. This band can be related to the luminescence of some kind of surface defects, probably also including the oxygen-related defects. The mechanisms of recombination luminescence and excitation of the UV-blue luminescence caused by the oxygen-related defects were …
Single Out-of-Resonance Dielectric Nanoparticles as Molecular Sensors.
2021
Light scattering from single nanoparticles and nanostructures is a commonly used readout method for nanosensors. Increasing the spectral sensitivity of resonant nanosensors to changes in their local surrounding has been the focus of many studies. Switching from spectral to intensity monitoring allows one to investigate nonresonant or out-of-resonance dielectric nanoparticles. Here, we systematically compared such dielectric silica nanoparticles with plasmonic gold nanorods by deriving analytical expressions and by performing experiments. The experiments show a similar sensitivity for the detection of an adsorbate layer for both particle types, which is in good agreement with theory. The fla…
Secondary-Structure-Driven Self-Assembly of Reactive Polypept(o)ides: Controlling Size, Shape, and Function of Core Cross-Linked Nanostructures.
2017
Achieving precise control over the morphology and function of polymeric nanostructures during self-assembly remains a challenge in materials as well as biomedical science, especially when independent control over particle properties is desired. Herein, we report on nanostructures derived from amphiphilic block copolypept(o)ides by secondary-structure-directed self-assembly, presenting a strategy to adjust core polarity and function separately from particle preparation in a bioreversible manner. The peptide-inherent process of secondary-structure formation allows for the synthesis of spherical and worm-like core-cross-linked architectures from the same block copolymer, introducing a simple y…
Production of polymeric micro- and nanostructures with tunable properties as pharmaceutical delivery systems
2020
Abstract The production of novel graft copolymers based on poly-e-caprolactone (PCL) and polyaspartamide are useful to realize structures for potential biomedical applications. Here, the synthesis of pegylated PCL/polyhydroxyethyl aspartamide (PHEA) graft copolymers (PHEA-g-SUCC-PCL-g-PEG) with tunable composition, was achieved by followpling a synthetic strategy that involved first the grafting of preformed PCL on PHEA backbone, then polyethylen glycol (PEG), by using 1,1′-carbonyldiimidazole (CDI) to speed up the condensation reaction. Graft copolymers with a Derivatization Degree (DD) in PCL ranging between 1.1 and 4.4 mol% were obtained, and processable with different technologies for t…
Self-Assembly of block copolymers into internally ordered microparticles
2020
Abstract Block copolymer (BCP) self-assembly is one of the most versatile concepts for the bottom-up design of functional nanostructures in materials science, nanomedicine and nanotechnology. While BCPs have been extensively studied regarding their microphase separation in bulk and the self-assembly in solution, only recently BCPs were investigated for their ability to form internally ordered microparticles. In this review, we discuss two emerging concepts: (i) the microphase separation of BCPs in the spherical confinement of evaporating emulsion droplets and (ii) the self-assembly of highly asymmetric BCPs under concentrated conditions. While the first concept yields solid and compact mult…
Chiral helical nanostructures based on amorphous abc-triblock copolymers
1995
So far all lattices of regular microdomain structures reported in the literature, either based on binary AB, ABA or ternary ABC block copolymers, can be described using simple symmetry elements like mirror planes, symmetry centers and rotation axes. The microphase separation in a linear ternary block copolymer consisting of three immiscible components namely polystyrene, polybutadiene and polymethyl methacrylate gives rise to the formation of a chiral supramolecular assembly in which chirality is not defined on a molecular (or macromolecular) level but only by the assembly of the linear triblock copolymer molecules. The polybutadiene (7, 12 wt.-%) phase forms helical strands surrounding the…
