Carbonate-coordinated metal complexes precede the formation of liquid amorphous mineral emulsions of divalent metal carbonates†

During the mineralisation of metal carbonates MCO3 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Mn, Cd, Pb) liquid-like amorphous intermediates emerge. These intermediates that form via a liquid/liquid phase separation behave like a classical emulsion and are stabilized electrostatically. The occurrence of these intermediates is attributed to the formation of highly hydrated networks whose stability is mainly based on weak interactions and the variability of the metal-containing pre-critical clusters. Their existence and compositional freedom are evidenced by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Liquid intermediates in non-classical crystallisation pathways seem to be more common than assumed.

Dynamics of guest molecules in PHTP inclusion compounds as probed by solid-state NMR and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Partially deuterated 1,4-distyrylbenzene () is included into the pseudohexagonal nanochannels of perhydrotriphenylene (PHTP). The overall and intramolecular mobility of is investigated over a wide temperature range by (13)C, (2)H NMR as well as fluorescence spectroscopy. Simulations of the (2)H NMR spectral shapes reveal an overall wobble motion of in the channels with an amplitude of about 4 degrees at T = 220 K and 10 degrees at T = 410 K. Above T = 320 K the wobble motion is superimposed by localized 180 degrees flips of the terminal phenyl rings with a frequency of 10(6) Hz at T = 340 K. Solution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy on a nanostructured diamond chip

We demonstrate nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy of picoliter-volume solutions with a nanostructured diamond chip. Using optical interferometric lithography, diamond surfaces were nanostructured with dense, high-aspect-ratio nanogratings, enhancing the surface area by more than a factor of 15 over mm^2 regions of the chip. The nanograting sidewalls were doped with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers so that more than 10 million NV centers in a (25 micrometer)^2 laser spot are located close enough to the diamond surface (5 nm) to detect the NMR spectrum of 1 pL of fluid lying within adjacent nanograting grooves. Evaluation of thermoresponsive properties and biocompatibility of polybenzofulvene aggregates for leuprolide delivery

Abstract In this study, a polybenzofulvene derivative named poly-6-MOEG-9-BF3k, was evaluated as polymeric material for the production of injectable thermoresponsive nano-aggregates able to load low molecular weight peptidic drug, like the anticancer leuprolide. Thermoresponsive behavior of poly-6-MOEG-9-BF3k was studied in aqueous media by evaluating scattering intensity variations by means of DLS in function of temperature. Gene toxicity studies on titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanomaterials used for UV-protection in cosmetic formulations

Titanium dioxide and zinc oxide nanomaterials, used as UV protecting agents in sunscreens, were investigated for their potential genotoxicity in in vitro and in vivo test systems. Since standard OECD test methods are designed for soluble materials and genotoxicity testing for nanomaterials is still under revision, a battery of standard tests was used, covering different endpoints. Human periodontal fibroblast response to a nanostructured hydroxyapatite bone replacement graft in vitro

Abstract Objective The efficacy of nanostructured hydroxyapatite (NHA) for the treatment of osseous defects has been demonstrated in recent studies, even though the underlining biological mechanism is still poorly known. Numerous sex-related morphological adaptations are connected to reproductive behavior in animals. For example, females of some insect species can submerge during oviposition, which may lead to sex-related adaptations in the hydrophobicity (water-repellency) due to specialization of certain morphological structures. On the other hand, ageing can cause changes in hydrophobicity of the surface, because the morphological structures can wear with age. Tuning the photocatalytic activity of bismuth wolframate: Towards selective oxidations for the biorefinery driven by solar-light

The sol–gel entrapment of nanostructured Bi2WO6 enhances the activity and the selectivity of the short-gap semiconductor in the sunlight-driven photo-oxidation of trans-ferulic and trans-cinnamic acid dissolved in water with air as the primary oxidant. Valuable products such as vanillin, benzaldehyde, benzoic acid and vanillic acid are obtained. This provides the proof of concept that photocatalysis could be a promising technology in tomorrow's solar biorefineries.
