Effect of electron beam irradiation and plastic deformation on molar mass of medical grade ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene

Badano wpływ sterylizacji metodą napromieniania strumieniem elektronów oraz deformacji plastycznej (zgniatania, rys. 1) polietylenu ultrawielkocząsteczkowego (UHMW-PE), stosowanego do wytwarzania panewek endoprotez stawu biodrowego, na masę molową polimeru. Stwierdzono, że sterylizacja wpływa na utleniającą destrukcję makrocząsteczek polimeru, której stopień zależy od użytej dawki promieniowania (zmniejszenie masy molowej masowo średniej). Wet-chemical approach for the cell-adhesive modification of polytetrafluoroethylene

Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), a frequently utilized polymer for the fabrication of synthetic vascular grafts, was surface-modified by means of a wet-chemical process. The inherently non-cell-adhesive polymer does not support cellular attachment, a prerequisite for the endothelialization of luminal surface grafts in small diameter applications. To impart the material with cell-adhesive properties a treatment with sodium-naphthalene provided a basis for the subsequent immobilization of the adhesion promoting RGD-peptide using a hydroxy- and amine-reactive crosslinker. Inhibition by cellular vacuolar ATPase impairs human papillomavirus uncoating and infection.

ABSTRACT Several viruses, including human papillomaviruses, depend on endosomal acidification for successful infection. Hence, the multisubunit enzyme vacuolar ATPase (V-ATPase), which is mainly responsible for endosome acidification in the cell, represents an attractive target for antiviral strategies. In the present study, we show that V-ATPase is required for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and that uncoating/disassembly but not endocytosis is affected by V-ATPase inhibition. Theoretical calculations on the valence electronic structure of naphthalocyanine: comparison with experimental photoemission data

Abstract We present a theoretical investigation of the electronic structure of metal-free 2,3-naphthalocyanine (2,3-H2Nc) using the valence effective Hamiltonian (VEH) technique. The VEH-DOVS curves obtained for 2,3-H2Nc are correlated with those calculated for naphthalene molecule and a one-to-one correspondence is found. From the electronic structure standpoint, naphthalocyanine has to be viewed as formed by joining four naphthalene moieties to the central carbon-nitrogen ring. An excellent quantitative agreement is found between VEH-DOVS curves and experimental photoemission data.
