A modeling study suggesting how a reduction in the context-dependent input on CA1 pyramidal neurons could generate schizophrenic behavior.

2011

The neural mechanisms underlying schizophrenic behavior are unknown and very difficult to investigate experimentally, although a few experimental and modeling studies suggested possible causes for some of the typical psychotic symptoms related to this disease. The brain region most involved in these processes seems to be the hippocampus, because of its critical role in establishing memories for objects or events in the context in which they occur. In particular, a hypofunction of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) component of the synaptic input on the distal dendrites of CA1 pyramidal neurons has been suggested to play an important role for the emergence of schizophrenic behavior. Modeling st…

Snapshot hyperspectral system for noninvasive skin blood oxygen saturation monitoring

2018

The present study introduces recently developed compact hyperspectral snapshot system (device and software) for skin oxygen saturation monitoring. This prototype device involves compact snapshot hyperspectral camera, multi-wavelength illuminator, optical filter and crossed polarizers. The device was validated using reference color samples and and in-vivo during finger arterial occlusion tests. The prototype system demonstrated good performance of skin hyperspectral measurements in spectral range of 500-630nm. The results confirmed reliability of developed system for in-vivo assessment of skin blood oxygen saturation.

Towards single snapshot multispectral skin assessment

2012

Skin assessment technology based on comparative analysis of single-pixel RGB signal values at poly-chromatic illumination has been proposed. Multi-spectral imaging information from a single snapshot RGB image data set with the inter-channel crosstalk correction can be extracted this way. Proof-of-concept evaluations and measurement results are presented and discussed. Potential of bi-chromatic illumination for skin hemoglobin mapping during arterial occlusion test has been demonstrated.

Interaction ofEscherichia colihemolysin with biological membranes

2001

Escherichia coli hemolysin (HlyA) is a membrane-permeabilizing protein belonging to the family of RTX-toxins. Lytic activity depends on binding of Ca2(+) to the C-terminus of the molecule. The N-terminus of HlyA harbors hydrophobic sequences that are believed to constitute the membrane-inserting domain. In this study, 13 HlyA cysteine-replacement mutants were constructed and labeled with the polarity-sensitive fluorescent probe 6-bromoacetyl-2-dimethylaminonaphthalene (badan). The fluorescence emission of the label was examined in soluble and membrane-bound toxin. Binding effected a major blue shift in the emission of six residues within the N-terminal hydrophobic domain, indicating inserti…

Molecular architecture of a toxin pore: a 15-residue sequence lines the transmembrane channel of staphylococcal alpha-toxin.

1996

Staphylococcus aureus alpha-toxin is a hydrophilic polypeptide of 293 amino acids that produces heptameric transmembrane pores. During assembly, the formation of a pre-pore precedes membrane permeabilization; the latter is linked to a conformational change in the oligomer. Here, 41 single-cysteine replacement toxin mutants were thiol-specifically labelled with the polarity-sensitive fluorescent probe acrylodan. After oligomerization on membranes, only the mutants with acrylodan attached to residues in the sequence 118-140 exhibited a marked blue shift in the fluorescence emission maximum, indicative of movement of the fluorophore to a hydrophobic environment. Within this region, two functio…

The contribution proposes an analytical description of the Miscellaneous manuscript of Greek rites (Branc. I.B.6) preserved at the National Library of Naples. The code collects the consultation activities of the Congregatio…

Structural highs formation and their relationship to sedimentary basins in the north Sicily continental margin (southern Tyrrhenian Sea): implication…

2005

Two high-penetration seismic profiles across the continental margin of north Sicily (southern Tyrrhenian Sea) have been interpreted to construct a crustal section across the margin and to provide a three-dimensional perspective on the upper crustal setting of the Solunto High and its structural relationships with the adjacent Cefalù Basin. Crystalline rocks of the Kabilian-Calabrian Units (KCU) are recognized in the Solunto High region and farther to the north. The KCU body is tectonically superimposed onto sedimentary rocks pertaining to the Sicilian-Maghrebian Units (SMU) and the Solunto High corresponds to the thrust sheet culmination. Its occurrence in the Solunto High demonstrates that…

Lettere di John Acton, Ferdinando Borbone e Maria Carolina d'Asburgo-Lorena a Francesco Maria Statella ottobre 1799 - giugno 1800

2012

Modulation of excitatory and inhibitory circuits for visual awareness in the human right parietal cortex.

2005

The balance of specific patterns of excitation and inhibition in critical regions of both hemispheres could be relevant in orienting attention over the extrapersonal space. In the present study a group of normal subjects had to detect small rectangular stimuli presented briefly on a computer screen in three different conditions: unilateral presentation either to left or right visual periphery or bilateral simultaneous presentation. Paired transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), was applied over the right parietal cortex 150 ms after the presentation of the visual stimuli with different inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs: 1, 3,5 and 10 ms). When paired TMS was applied 150 ms, but not 100 ms, af…
