Inclusive Decision-making and Campaign: The Participation of Second Generation Migrants for Preventing Radicalization

2019

This paper deals with the analysis of the first results of Oltre project (ISF - DG Migration and Home Affairs, EU) funding for preventing the radicalization of the second-generation of migrants. The non-standard field research was intertwined with online social network profiles investigation. We present the off-line research results. Starting from the different dimensions of the risk of radicalization proposed by the kaleidoscopic overview of risk factors (Sieckelinck and Gielen 2018: 5; Ranstorp 2016), we created a topic guide for the indepth qualitative interviews collecting 42 interviews of 2G youths (18-30 years) in 7 Italian towns, interviewing also several privileged testimonies. Then…

Sophie Hannah’s Hurting Distance as Crime Trauma Fiction

2020

Rodi-Risberg addresses trauma’s generic border-crossing movement through Sophie Hannah’s socially conscious crime thriller Hurting Distance (2007), a trauma narrative of sexual violence and emotional abuse that can be referred to as crime trauma fiction because it incorporates and blends features of both genres. Rodi-Risberg’s main argument is that crime trauma fiction such as Hannah’s novel represents traumatic experience as politically significant by mobilising affect through its themes of violence as social critique. The chapter concludes that contemporary narratives of crime and trauma such as Hannah’s should be seen as an important locus not only for representing traumatic experience, …

The myth of cognitive agency: subpersonal thinking as a cyclically recurring loss of mental autonomy

2018

This metatheoretical paper investigates mind wandering from the perspective of philosophy of mind. It has two central claims. The first is that, on a conceptual level, mind wandering can be fruitfully described as a specific form of mental autonomy loss. The second is that, given empirical constraints, most of what we call “conscious thought” is better analyzed as a subpersonal process that more often than not lacks crucial properties traditionally taken to be the hallmark of personal-level cognition - such as mental agency, explicit, consciously experienced goal-directedness, or availability for veto control. I claim that for roughly two thirds of our conscious life-time we do not possess …

Using the Storytelling Method to Hear Children’s Perspectives and Promote Their Social-Emotional Competence

2019

This study investigated the use of a playful, narrative, vignette-based method, called Story Magician’s Play Time (SMPT), in supporting children’s social-emotional reasoning and in helping children practice their social skills. We set out to examine (a) in what ways children use SMPT sessions to explore social interaction situations and to practice social skills, and (b) what story content and narrative play behavior during the SMPT sessions reveal about the social-emotional competence of children, in terms of acquisition and performance skills. The data were collected during SMPT storytelling sessions where 5- to 6-year-old children narrated stories of familiar but challenging daily situa…

Hoivan kertomuksia. Tarinamallit ikääntyneestä äidistään huolehtivien tytärten narratiiveissa

2015

Hyvinvointipolitiikassa puhutaan yhä enemmän ikääntyneen oikeudesta jäädä asumaan nykyiseen kotiinsa ja saada sinne tarvitsemansa palvelut. Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee narratiivisen analyysin keinoin, miten huolenpidon kokemus jäsentyy äidistään huolehtivien tytärten hoivakertomuksissa yhä vahvemmin kodissa annettavaan epäviralliseen hoivaan tukeutuvassa yhteiskunnassa. Kertomisen tavat nojautuvat neljästä narratiivisesta perusrakenteesta kolmeen: romanssiin, tragediaan ja ironiaan. Aineiston kertomukset osoittavat tapoja, miten huolenpito voi jäsentyä merkitykselliseksi osaksi elämänkulkua. Kulttuurisista malleista vahvin on hyvän tyttären tarinamalli, joka jäsentää tyttären omaa osallisuut…

Climbing for equality: overcoming social inequality through sport : a narrative inquiry into the sport lives of five visually disabled climbers in Me…

2016

This master thesis is a qualitative narrative inquiry that illustrates and explores the stories of five visually disabled participants who took up the practice of rock climbing and mountaineering as a means to overcome social inequality. The researcher’s role within the study was that of active participation by being the coach and mountain guide for the participants over a period of five years. This narrative analysis reconstructs the stories of the participants in a coherent thematic analysis from a Marxist historical perspective, explaining how inequality towards the participants was created, by using the concept of Cultural Hegemony from Antonio Gramsci. The mentioned methodology was cho…

Revealing colonial power relations in early childhood policy making: An autoethnographic story on selective evidence

2021

The COVID-19 pandemic exposes uncertainty, instability and glaring inequality that requires urgent global policy decisions. Historically, bureaucrats regard uncertainty as the enemy and look for tested solutions (Stevens, 2011). In contrast, Fielding & Moss (2010) acknowledge an uncertain future and encourage shifting policy making towards the search for possibilities instead of replicating singular solutions. Escobar (2020) advocates for pluriversal politics, with many possibilities created through collective decision-making by autonomous interlinked networks. In this paper, I combine autoethnography with policy analysis drawing on my own experience in South African early childhood pol…

Making Sense or Betting on the Future? : Identifying Antenarratives of AI projects in a Large Financial Organization

2019

The future is uncertain, but what is certain is that we can make sense of the future through our ‘antenarratives’. In this study, I shed light on prospective sensemaking and apply the concept of antenarrative as a framework to identify how strategy practitioners make sense of AI projects. The empirical case organization is a large Finnish financial organization that aims to be a digital leader. The case organization is currently developing and implementing AI in its business operations, a recent and emerging wave in the financial business sector. Following a thematic analysis, the narratives that seem to either reflect positive (that promote) or negative (that impede) changes were examined.…
