Incómodas. Los personajes femeninos en la narrativa de Marta Portal.

2020

We propose a study about two female characters (primarily about the protagonists) in Marta Portal’s narrative, related to the theme of the fragmented, hidden and sleepless self is offered. The autofiction 270 which delineates each text of the authoress can be found in many characters; these last acts starting from a deep and not always calm process to themselves. The narrative ways used by the authoress, always coinciding with the narrative voice which speaks from a weak point of view to an only corner of observation, define the individual character of histories exploring the limits (ethical, professional, social, amorous) of a woman who, because of many reasons, sets herself apart, at the …

Role of sex and age in fatal outcomes of COVID-19: women and older centenarians are more resilient.

2023

In the present paper, we have analysed the role of age and sex in the fatal outcome of COVID-19, as there are conflicting results in the literature. As such, we have answered three controversial questions regarding this aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic: (1) Have women been more resilient than men? (2) Did centenarians die less than the remaining older people? (3) Were older centenarians more resistant to SARS-CoV-2 than younger centenarians? The literature review demonstrated that: (1) it is women who are more resilient, in agreement with data showing that women live longer than men even during severe famines and epidemics; however, there are conflicting data regarding centenarian men; (2) c…

Counter-Narratives Against Prejudice. How Second-Generation Youth Reverse Media Representations

2022

This paper deals with the OLTRE project (ISF - DG Migration and Home Affairs, EU), funded to counter the radicalization of second-generation migrants in Italy and created by a network made up of universities and private companies. This article shows the results of a study regarding the involvement of second-generation youth in the co-production of the social campaign for online communication, representing the outcome of the OLTRE project. The guidelines for the campaign came from our in-depth sociological field research (42 qualitative interviews of 2G youths, 18-30 years, in 7 Italian towns (Palermo, Cagliari, Rome, Bologna, Milan, Padua, Turin) and from theatre laboratories created by sec…

Usurping the victim's trauma narrative: Victim blaming and slut-shaming on season 1 of You

2020

The American TV series You (2018-) has been the subject of a heated debate on both social media and Academia in regard to its ambiguous approach to feminism and gender violence, due to its prioritization of the perpetrator’s voice over the victim’s (Rajiva and Patrick 2019). In the present context of feminist activism, with movements such as #MeToo and Time’s Up fostering female solidarity and giving voice to survivors of sexual violence, the series appears to have an opposite, and even sexist, agenda. Drawing on the concept of ‘trauma narratives’ (Vickroy 2004; Kohlke and Gutleben 2010), I argue that the first season of the show fails to grant the female victim, Beck, a therapeutic space w…

Traumatic Redemption Chronotope as Theoretical Model to Study Serial Shakespeares

2019

T

his article proposes a methodology to study Shakespearean intertexts in contemporary complex TV series. While the presence of Shakespeare’s inter-texts in contemporary complex TV seems ubiquitous, a sustained and theoretically focused academic study of the impact of Shakespeare in these works has not been produced. Reviewers and social media users’ comments have proposed readings of the series pointing at the importance of the series’ redemptive qualities. Taking Hannah Wolfe Eisner’s “Into the Middle of Things: Traumatic Redemption and the Politics of Form” as basis, I am presenting a theoretical model to study serial Shakespeares, with which I am referr…

An exploration of reciprocity between female athletes and their coach in elite junior swimming: a shared reality theory perspective

2021

Based on the proposition that the relationship between a coach and athlete is at its best when both parties contribute to enhancing its quality, the present study sought to investigate if Shared Reality Theory could provide new insights on the topic. Specifically, the purpose of the present study was to explore: (a) how a shared reality is established, or fails to be established, over the course of the sporting partnership between athletes and their coach; and (b) how the presence of a shared reality (or not) in the coach-athlete relationship is related to the experienced quality of the relationship between athletes and their coach, as recorded over time. Narrative inquiry, embedded within …

Hetkiä elämän virrasta : kerronnallinen ja kokemuksellinen aika Joki-elokuvassa

2016

Hetkia elaman virrasta. Kerronnallinen ja kokemuksellinen aika Joki -elokuvassa Jarmo Lampelan elokuvassa Joki (Suomi 2001) kerrotaan kuusi samanaikaista, toisiaan sivuavaa tarinaa, joissa joukko pikkukaupungin ihmisia joutuu valintojen eteen tai kohtaamaan elaman mullistavia asioita. Eri-ikaisten henkilohahmojensa kautta Joki piirtaa esiin koko elamankaaren. Artikkelissa Jokea tarkastellaan ajan nakokulmasta kiinnittamalla huomiota ajan eri tasoihin ja ulottuvuuksiin. Aikaa tarkastellaan yhtaalta osana elokuvan muotoa ja toisaalta katsojan ja elokuvan valisessa kohtaamisessa syntyvana ilmiona. Lisaksi kysytaan, miten Joki filosofisen sisaltonsa kautta tematisoi aikaan liittyvia kysymyksia.…
