Physiopathological rationale of using high-flow nasal therapy in the acute and chronic setting: A narrative review

2019

Abstract Chronic lung disease and admissions due to acute respiratory failure (ARF) are becoming increasingly common. Consequently, there is a growing focus on optimizing respiratory support, particularly non-invasive respiratory support, to manage these conditions. High flow nasal therapy (HFNT) is a noninvasive technique where humidified and heated gas is delivered through the nose to the airways via small dedicated nasal prongs at flows that are higher than the rates usually applied during conventional oxygen therapy. HFNT enables to deliver different inspired oxygen fractions ranging from 0.21 to 1. Despite having only recently become available, the use of HFNT in the adult population i…

Health(care) in the Crisis: Reflections in Science and Society on Opioid Addiction

2021

Opioid abuse and misuse have led to an epidemic which is currently spreading worldwide. Since the number of opioid overdoses is still increasing, it is becoming obvious that current rather unsystematic approaches to tackle this health problem are not effective. This review suggests that fighting the opioid epidemic requires a structured public health approach. Therefore, it is important to consider not only scientific and biomedical perspectives, but societal implications and the lived experience of groups at risk as well. Hence, this review evaluates the risk factors associated with opioid overdoses and investigates the rates of chronic opioid misuse, particularly in the context of chronic…

2015

Artikkelissa tarkastellaan mielisairauden kansanomaisia tulkintoja 1900-luvun ensimmäisinä vuosikymmeninä, jolloin mielisairaita ja muita marginaaliryhmiä koskeva yhteiskunnallinen keskustelu kävi vilkkaana. Mielisairaat alkoivat degeneraatioteorioiden myötä näyttäytyä modernisoituvan yhteiskunnan ei- toivottuina toisina, joiden henkinen ja fyysinen rappio uskottiin perinnölliseksi. Mielisairaaloiden lukumäärää lisättiin, mutta merkittävä osa mielisairaiksi katsotuista eli yhä laitosten ulkopuolella, esimerkiksi elätteellä maaseudun yksityisissä perheissä. Artikkelissa selvitetään, miten mielisairaisiin suhtaudutaan aikakauden maallikkokerronnassa ja millaisia käsityksiä esitetään mielisair…

Identifying the Impact of Game Music both Within and Beyond Gameplay

2021

This paper presents an overview of and a brief critical reflection on game music’s impact on players both within and beyond the context of gameplay. The analysis is based both on the current literature as well as on preliminary (work-in-progress) observations of our research project Game Music Everyday Memories. We consider how the functions and uses of game music potentially extend to people’s everyday life, thus constituting a personally and culturally meaningful relationship with music that is not immediately connected to gameplay. On the other hand, we consider the ways game music and a person’s attachment to the music are involved in gameplay motivation and potential game retention. As…

Häpeä suomalaisten mielisairaalamuistoissa

2019

Korostunut häpeän tunne liittyy olennaisesti niin mielenterveysongelmiin kuin psykiatriseen hoitotyöhön. Erityisesti mielisairaalaan joutuminen on monelle häpeällinen kokemus, josta on vaikeaa puhua. Tässä artikkelissa tarkastelen mielisairaalakokemuksiin liittyvää häpeää  psykiatristen sairaaloiden potilaiden, omaisten ja henkilökunnan kirjoittamien muistojen valossa. Analysoin muistelijoiden kuvaamia häpeän kokemuksia kuvaten  häpeän kerronnallista rakentumista muistoissa. Pohdin mitkä tekijät ovat lisänneet, mitkä puolestaan helpottaneet mielisairaalakokemuksiin liittyvää häpeää. Eri muistelijaryhmien häpeän kokemukset ovat luonteeltaan erilaisia – potilaiden muistojen osalta niissä koro…

Storie di oggetti (e di sogni) perduti. Musei contemporanei per ritrovarsi

2022

What happens to humanity discarded by history? To the broken dreams (of love and life)? What to do with the objects that fill our life as "fragile ruins" of a dream lost forever? The article, looking at various contemporary projects of permanent museums and temporary exhibitions, intends to outline and lead a reflection on the radical paradigm change that intervenes in the exhibition processes and in the strategies of emotional engagement within contemporary museological policies. Conceived as places of encounter and relationship, museums are open to communities and individual stories. In particular, the emotion of lost guided the constitution of collections of objects, in a series of exhibi…
